Jeremiah 44:7 Verse Jeremiah 44:7. This great evil against your souls — Will not self-interest weigh with you? See what ruin your conduct has brought upon your country. Your fathers sinned as you are doing; and where are they now? Either destroyed, or in captivity. And you are now taking the same way to your own destruction.
Jeremiah 7:9 Verse Jeremiah 7:9. Will ye steal, murder — Will you continue to commit such abominations, and pretend to worship me; and thus defile the place that is called by my name; and so make my house a den of robbers? I have seen this,-and can you expect to escape condign punishment? Ye shall not escape.
Lamentations 4:21 Verse Lamentations 4:21. Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom — A strong irony. The cup also shall pass through unto thee — Thou who hast triumphed in our disasters shalt shortly have enough of thy own. They had joined themselves to the Chaldeans, (see Psalms 137:7,) and therefore they should share in the desolations of Babylon.
Hosea 4:7 Verse Hosea 4:7. Will I change their glory into shame. — As the idolaters at Dan and Bethel have changed my glory into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass, (Romans 1:23,) so will I change their glory into shame or ignominy. In the day of my wrath, their calf-gods shall not deliver them.
Hosea 7:8 Verse Hosea 7:8. A cake not turned. — In the East having heated the hearth, they sweep one corner, put the cake upon it, and cover it with embers; in a short time they turn it, cover it again, and continue this several times, till they find it sufficiently baked. All travellers into Asiatic countries have noted this.
Micah 2:4 Verse Micah 2:4. Take up a parable against you — Your wickedness and your punishment shall be subjects of common conversation; and a funeral dirge shall be composed and sung for you as for the dead. The lamentation is that which immediately follows: We be utterly spoiled; and ends, Are these his doings? Micah 2:7.
Micah 3:7 Verse Micah 3:7. Shall the seers be ashamed — For the false visions of comfort and prosperity which they pretended to see.And the diviners confounded — Who pretended to foretell future prosperity; for they themselves are now thralled in that very captivity which the true prophets foretold, and which the false prophets said should not happen.
Nahum 1:7 Verse 7. The Lord is good — In the midst of judgment he remembers mercy; and among the most dreadful denunciations of wrath he mingles promises of mercy. None that trust in him need be alarmed at these dreadful threatenings; they shall be discriminated in the day of wrath, for the Lord knoweth them that trust in him.
Matthew 20:7 Verse Matthew 20:7. No man hath hired us. — This was the reason why they were all the day idle. And whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. — Ye may expect payment in proportion to your labour, and the time ye spend in it; but this clause is wanting in some of the best MSS., versions, and fathers.
Matthew 22:7 Verse Matthew 22:7. But when the king — HIMSELF or, this very king. I have added εκεινος on the authority of nine of the most ancient MSS. and nearly one hundred others; the later Syriac, six copies of the Itala, and some of the fathers. Several printed editions have it, and Griesbach has received it into the text.
Mark 7:36 Verse Mark 7:36. Tell no man — Matthew 8:4. This miracle is not mentioned by any other of the evangelists. Another proof that Mark did not abridge Matthew. For a practical review of the different important subjects of this chapter, see Matthew 15:1-39, and particularly the observations at the end. Matthew 15:39.
Luke 17:18 Verse Luke 17:18. This stranger. — Often God receives more praise and affectionate obedience from those who had long lived without his knowledge and fear, than from those who were bred up among his people, and who profess to be called by his name. The simple reason is, Those who have MUCH forgiven will love much, Luke 7:47.
Luke 22:7 Verse Luke 22:7. The passover — πασχα, Luke 22:1, is the name of the festival; το πασχα here is supposed to be the name of that on which they feasted, viz. the sacrificed paschal lamb. But see the notes on Matthew 26:0, and especially the observations at the end of that chapter. Matthew 26:0- :
John 5:7 Verse John 5:7. Sir, I have no man — Ναι, Κυριε - "Yes, sir; but I have no man:" - this is the reading of C*GH, fourteen others, both the Syriac, later Persic, Arabic, and Chrysostom. Reader, be thankful to God for health and outward comforts. When long affliction has been allied to deep poverty, how deplorable is the state!
John 8:21 Verse John 8:21. Then said Jesus again unto them — He had said the same things to them the day before. See John 7:34.Ye shall seek me — When your calamities come upon you, ye shall in vain seek for the help of the Messiah, whom ye now reject, and whom ye shall shortly crucify.
Acts 21:33 Verse 33. And took him — With great violence, according to Acts 24:7, probably meaning an armed force. To be bound with two chains — To be bound between two soldiers; his right hand chained to the left hand of the one, and his left hand to the right of the other. Acts 12:6; Acts 12:6.
2 Corinthians 1:7 Verse 2 Corinthians 1:7. And our hope of you is steadfast — We have no doubt of your continuing in the truth; because we see that you have such a full, experimental knowledge of it, that no sufferings or persecutions can turn you aside. And we are sure that, as ye suffer, so shall ye rejoice.
Philippians 4:16 Verse 16. For even in Thessalonica — While labouring to plant the Church there, he was supported partly by working with his hands, 1 Thessalonians 2:9; 2 Thessalonians 3:7-9; and partly by the contributions sent him from Philippi. Even the Thessalonians had contributed little to his maintenance: this is not spoken to their credit.
1 Timothy 5:7 Verse 7. That they may be blameless. — Charge the whole Church to attend to these things, that they may be blameless. The words are not spoken of the widows only, but of the Church or its officers; it cannot be restricted to the widows, for the adjective ανεπιληπτοι is both of the masculine and feminine gender.
Philemon 1:7 Verse Philemon 1:7. For we have great joy — This verse does not read harmoniously. The Greek authorizes the following arrangement: For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, O brother, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee. The apostle speaks here of the works of charity in which Philemon abounded towards poor Christians.
