Genesis 35:7 Verse Genesis 35:7. El-beth-el — אל בית אל the strong God, the house of the strong God. But the first אל el is wanting in one of De Rossi's MSS., as it is also in the Septuagint, Vulgate, Syriac, and some copies of the Arabic. The sentence reads much better without it, and much more consistent with the parallel passages.
Genesis 7:20 Verse Genesis 7:20. Fifteen cubits upward — Should any person object to the universality of the deluge because he may imagine there is not water sufficient to drown the whole globe in the manner here related, he may find a most satisfactory answer to all the objections he can raise on this ground in Mr. Ray's Physico-theological Discourses, 2d edit., 8vo., 1693.
VII
Versículo Proverbios 7:1 . Hijo mío, guarda mis palabras. Ver Proverbios 2:1 .
Proverbs 7:17 Versículo Proverbios 7:17 . He perfumado cualquier lecho con mirra. מר mor , "áloes", אהלים ahalim , y "canela", קנמון kinnamon .
Amos 8:7 Verse Amos 8:7. By the excellency of Jacob — By the state of eminence to which he had raised the descendants of Jacob; or, by the excellent ONE of Jacob, that is, HIMSELF. The meaning is: "As surely as I have raised you to such a state of eminence, so surely will I punish you in proportion to your advantages and your crimes."
Nahum 1:15 Verse Nahum 1:15. Behold upon the mountains — Borrowed probably from Isaiah 52:7, but applied here to the messengers who brought the good tidings of the destruction of Nineveh. Judah might then keep her solemn feasts, for the wicked Assyrian should pass through the land no more; being entirely cut off, and the imperial city razed to its foundations.
Zechariah 7:12 Verse Zechariah 7:12. Made their hearts as an adamant stone — שמיר shamir may mean the granite. This is the hardest stone with which the common people could be acquainted. Perhaps the corundum, of which emery is a species, may be intended. Bochart thinks it means a stone used in polishing others. The same name, in Hebrew, applies to different stones.
Luke 7:36 Verse 36. One of the Pharisees — Called Simon, Luke 7:40. This account is considered by many critics and commentators to be the same with that in Matthew 26:6, c., Mark 14:3 and John 12:3. This subject is considered pretty much at large in the notes on Matthew 26:6, &c., to which the reader is requested to refer.
Luke 7:45 Verse 45. Since the time I came in — Rather, Since the time SHE came in, αφ' ἡς εισηλθεν, not εισηλθον, I came in, for it is clear from Luke 7:37 that the woman came in after Christ, having heard that he was sitting at meat in the Pharisee's house. The reading which I have adopted is supported by several MSS. and Versions.
Acts 24:7 Verse Acts 24:7. With great violence — μετα πολλης βιας, I rather think, means with an armed force. Tertullus intimates that Lysias interfered contrary to law, and brought soldiers to support him in his infringement on their constitution. This is what he seems to say and complain of; for the Jews were vexed with Lysias for rescuing the apostle from their hands.
Acts 7:55 Verse 55. Saw the glory of God — The Shekinah, the splendour or manifestation of the Divine Majesty. And Jesus standing on the right hand of God — In his official character, as Mediator between God and man.Stephen had this revelation while in the Sanhedrin; for as yet he had not been forced out of the city. See Acts 7:58.
Romans 12:7 Verse Romans 12:7. Or ministry — διακονια simply means the office of a deacon; and what this office was, see in Clarke's note on "Acts 6:4", where the subject is largely discussed.Or he that teacheth — The teacher, διδασκαλος, was a person whose office it was to instruct others, who thereby catechizing, or simply explaining the grand truths of Christianity.
1 Corinthians 7:16 Verse 1 Corinthians 7:16. For what knowest thou, O wife — You that are Christians, and who have heathen partners, do not give them up because they are such, for you may become the means of saving them unto eternal life. Bear your cross, and look up to God, and he may give your unbelieving husband or wife to your prayers.
2 Corinthians 2:7 Verse 2 Corinthians 2:7. Ye ought rather to forgive him — He had now suffered enough; for the punishment inflicted had answered the end for which it was inflicted; and there was some danger that, if this poor culprit were not restored to the bosom of the Church, his distress and anguish would destroy his life, or drive him to despair.
Hebrews 3:15 Verse 15. While it is said, To-day — You may see the necessity of perseverance from the saying, "Today, if ye will hear his voice," therefore harden not your hearts-do not neglect so great a salvation; hold fast what ye have obtained, and let no man take your crown. See on Hebrews 3:7-9, and Hebrews 3:12.
James 2:7 Verse 7. Blaspheme that worthy name — They took every occasion to asperse the Christian name and the Christian faith, and have been, from the beginning to the present day, famous for their blasphemies against Christ and his religion. It is evident that these were Jews of whom St. James speaks; no Christians in these early times could have acted the part here mentioned.
