Ezekiel 10:4 Verse Ezekiel 10:4. The glory of the Lord went up — This is repeated from Ezekiel 9:3.The house was filled with the cloud — This is a fact similar to what occurred frequently at the tabernacle in the wilderness, and in the dedication of the temple by Solomon. What is mentioned here was the Divine shechinah, the symbolical representation of the majesty of God.
Ezekiel 5:9 Verse Ezekiel 5:9. I will do in thee that which I have not done — The destruction of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar was one of the greatest calamities that ever fell on any nation or place before; and that by the Romans under Titus exceeded all that has taken place since. These two sackages of that city have no parallel in the history of mankind.
Hosea 10:9 Verse Hosea 10:9. Thou hast sinned from the days of Gibeah — This is another reference to the horrible rape and murder of the Levite's wife, Judges 19:13-14.There they stood — Only one tribe was nearly destroyed, viz., that of Benjamin. They were the criminals, the children of iniquity; the others were faultless, and stood only for the rights of justice and mercy.
Amos 9:10 Verse Amos 9:10. All the sinners of my people — Those who are the boldest and most incredulous; especially they who despise my warnings, and say the evil day shall not overtake nor prevent us; they shall die by the sword. It is no evidence of a man's safety that he is presumptuously fearless. There is a blessing to him who trembles at God's word.
Zechariah 9:7 Verse Zechariah 9:7. I will take away his blood out of his mouth — The Philistines, when incorporated with the Israelites, shall abstain from blood, and every thing that is abominable. And Ekron as a Jebusite. — As an inhabitant of Jerusalem. Many of the Philistines became proselytes to Judiasm; and particularly the cities of Gaza, and Ashdod. See Joseph. Antiq. lib. xlii., c. 15, s. 4.
Mark 9:12 Verse Mark 9:12. And how it is written — Rather, as also it is written. Instead of και πως, AND HOW it is written, I read καθως, AS ALSO it is written of the Son of man, &c. This reading is supported by AKM, seventeen others, the later Syriac in the margin, Slavonic and Armenian. Some think the propriety of adopting this reading is self-evident.
John 15:22 Verse 22. But now they have no cloke for their sin. — They are without excuse. See the margin, and John 9:41. Christ had done such works as demonstrated him to be the Messiah - yet they rejected him: here lay their sin; and this sin, and the punishment to which it exposed them, still remain; for they still continue to reject the Lord that bought them.
John 9:27 Verse 27. I have told you already — So he did, John 9:15. And did ye not hear? Ye certainly did. Why then do you wish to hear it again? Is it because ye wish to become his disciples? The poor man continued steady in his testimony; and, by putting this question to them, he knew he should soon put an end to the debate.
Acts 21:9 Verse Acts 21:9. Four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy. — Probably these were no more than teachers in the Church: for we have already seen that this is a frequent meaning of the word prophesy; and this is undoubtedly one thing intended by the prophecy of Joel, quoted Acts 2:17-18, of this book. If Philip's daughters might be prophetesses, why not teachers?
Acts 3:9 Verse Acts 3:9. And all the people saw him — The miracle was wrought in the most public manner, and in the most public place, and in a place where the best judgment could be formed of it; for, as it was a Divine operation, the priests, c., were the most proper persons to judge of it and under their notice it was now wrought.
Romans 5:9 Verse Romans 5:9. Much more then, being now justified — If Jesus Christ, in his endless comparison towards us gave his life for ours, while we were yet enemies; being now justified by his blood - by his death on the cross, and thus reconciled to God, we shall be saved from wrath - from punishment for past transgression, through him - by what he has thus suffered for us.
1 Corinthians 14:9 Verse 1 Corinthians 14:9. Likewise ye — If ye do not speak in the Church so as to be understood, your labour is useless; ye shall speak into the air-your speech will be lost and dissipated in the air, without conveying any meaning to any person: there will be a noise or sound, but nothing else. Gifts of that kind, thus used, are good for nothing.
Galatians 5:7 Verse 7. Ye did run well — Ye once had the faith that worked by love-ye were genuine, active, useful Christians.Who doth hinder — Who prevented you from continuing to obey the truth? Ye could only be turned aside by your own consent. St. Paul here, as in 1 Corinthians 9:24, compares Christianity to a race. See the notes on the above text.
Revelation 9:19 Verse Revelation 9:19. Their power is in their mouth — From these the destructive balls are projected; and in their tails, the breech where the charge of gunpowder is lodged.Their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads — If cannons are intended, the description, though allegorical, is plain enough; for brass ordnance especially are frequently thus ornamented, both at their muzzles and at their breech.
Revelation 9:4 Verse Revelation 9:4. They should not hurt the grass — Neither the common people, the men of middling condition, nor the nobles. However, this appears rather to refer to the prudent counsels of a military chief, not to destroy the crops and herbage of which they might have need in their campaigns.Which have not the seal of God — All false, hypocritical, and heterodox Christians.
