Genesis 22:11-12
"And the angel of Jehovah called out of heaven, and said, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. And he said, Lay not thy hand upon the lad, neither do thou anything unto him; for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine
Genesis 35 overview
This chapter is a collection of somewhat miscellaneous items, some of them out of chronological sequence, but all of them pertinent to concluding the personal history of Jacob, reaching a climax in his accession to the patriarchal preeminence inherited
Exodus 17:7
"And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the striving of the children of Israel, and because they tempted Jehovah, saying, Is Jehovah among us or not?"
The two names given by Moses to this place are seized upon by Bible critics
Exodus 8 overview
Swift judgment and punishment mark the action in Exodus 8. Plagues II, III, and IV fall in rapid succession; Pharaoh's heart progressively hardens, and God's ultimate victory through Moses and Aaron begins to appear:
(1) in the
Leviticus 9:8-11
"So Aaron drew near the altar, and slew the calf of the sin-offering, which was for himself. And the sons of Aaron delivered unto him the blood; and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood
Numbers 11:24-25
"And Moses went out, and told the people the words of Jehovah: and he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the tent. And Jehovah came down in the cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the Spirit that was upon him,
Numbers 27 overview
The narration of only two events makes up this chapter. These are:
(1) the new legislation that came because of an appeal by the daughters of Zelophehad (Numbers 27:1-11), and
(2) Joshua's appointment as
Matthew 5:8
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
This refers not merely to those whose hearts are free from evil purpose and desire but particularly alludes to those whose hearts have been purified by faith (Acts 15:9) and obedience to the gospel
Matthew 8:4
And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go, show thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
Mark's account reveals that the leper disobeyed the Lord's command not to publish the matter (Mark
Mark 1:22
And they were astonished at his teaching: for he taught them as having authority, and not as the scribes.
Matthew reported the close of the sermon on the mount in almost these exact words. Why? Both Matthew, Mark, and all the gospel writers drew freely
Mark 1:40
And there cometh to him a leper, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
THE CLEANSING OF THE LEPER
This wonder is recorded in all the synoptics; and, although Mark is credited with giving
Mark 10:2
And there came unto him Pharisees and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? trying him.
REGARDING MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE
Mark's account here is briefer than Matthew who gave the true form of the question as "Is it lawful for a man
Mark 7:10
For Moses said, Honor thy father and thy mother; and, He that speaketh evil of father or mother, let him die the death.
In this verse, and following, Jesus gave a glaring example of how human tradition had violated and circumvented the word of God.
Mark 8 overview
Topics which make up the subject matter of Mark 8 are: the feeding of the 4,000 (Mark 8:1-9), the Lord's refusal to give the Pharisees the kind of sign they wanted (Mark 8:11-13), questions concerning the leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod (Mark 8:14-21),
Mark 9:7
And there came a cloud overshadowing them: and there came a voice out of the cloud, This is my beloved Son: hear ye him.
What is meant by the overshadowing cloud? Did it envelop all of the group or only Jesus, Moses, and Elijah? From the fact of God's
Luke 20:27-40
And there came to him certain of the Sadducees, they that say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying, Teacher, Moses wrote unto us, that if a man's brother die, leaving a wife, and he be childless, his brother shall take the wife, and
Acts 21:20-21
And they, when they heard it, glorified God; and they said unto him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews of them that have believed; and they are all zealous for the law: and they have been informed concerning thee, that
Romans 7:5
For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were through the law, wrought in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
Under Romans 7:4 Paul's teaching is viewed as applicable to both Jewish and Gentile Christians, the same being essentially
Hebrews 3:2
Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also was Moses in all his house.
In Hebrews 2:17, Jesus had already been mentioned as a merciful and faithful high priest, and it is his "faithfulness" that needed stress here. Note how delicately
James 2:8
Howbeit if ye fulfill the royal law, according to the Scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well:
The royal law … It is impossible to view "royal law" as a reference to the Law of Moses, because Moses was never a
