Luke 21:5-6
And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and offerings, he said, As for these things which ye behold, the days come in which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
THE PROPHECY OF
Acts 15:2
And when Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and questioning with them, the brethren appointed that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.
No small dissension …
Acts 16:3
Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and he took and circumcised him because of the Jews that were in those parts: for they all knew that his father was a Greek.
To go forth with him … Paul, seeing in this promising young man the qualities
Acts 20:4
And there accompanied him as far as Asia, Sopater of Berea, the son of Pyrrhus; and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy; and of Asia, Tychicus and Trophimus.
It is noteworthy that Paul took no chance of handling
2 Corinthians 12:18
I exhorted Titus, and I sent the brother with him. Did Titus take any advantage of you? walked we not in the same spirit? walked we not in the same steps?
Tasker convincingly affirms that "I sent" as used here should not be translated in the
2 Corinthians 2 overview
The apostle Paul wrote much like some people talk; one thing led to another; and he often digressed from a line of thought, coming back to it only after a parenthetical discussion of something else. This trip through 2 Corinthians is as exciting as
2 Corinthians 2:12-13
Now when I came to Troas for the gospel of Christ, and when a door was opened unto me in the Lord, I had no relief for any spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went forth into Macedonia.
I had no relief …
2 Corinthians 7:16
I rejoice that in everything I am of good courage concerning you.
The victory had been won; Titus' mission had succeeded; but the problems that remained could be dealt with in confidence. The many were back on the right road; and, with this fundamental
2 Corinthians 7:6
Nevertheless he that comforteth the lowly, even God, comforted us by the coming of Titus.
No joy, however wonderful, could induce Paul to forget the God who had provided it; and this mention of his comfort was accompanied by his acknowledgment of the
2 Corinthians 8:6
Insomuch that we exhorted Titus, that as he had made a beginning before, so he would also complete in you this grace also.
We are heartily in agreement with Tasker who said:
This visit would seem to have taken place about a year before (2 Corinthians
Galatians 2:3-5
But not even Titus who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised: And that because of the false brethren brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage: to
1 Timothy 4:1
But the Spirit saith expressly, that in later times, some shall fall away from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons,
The Spirit saith expressly … "This means that there was neither doubt nor vagueness about
Titus 2 overview
DeWelt said that "The care of individual members of the church is the subject of Titus 2." Don DeWelt, Paul's Letter to Timothy and Titus (Joplin: College Press, 1961), p. 154. Throughout there is a strong emphasis upon the family which is
Titus 2:13
looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
Appearing… The two Advents are in Titus 2:11; Titus 2:13. In Titus 2:11, it was the appearing of the grace of God in the First Advent of our
Titus 2:6
the younger men likewise exhort to be sober-minded:
Paul did not here skimp the advice to young men. As Spain noted, the word "likewise" may be construed as pertaining to "all the injunctions given in verses 1-10." Carl Spain, Commentary on 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus (Austin, Texas: The R. B. Sweet Company, 1970), p. 179. "Sober-minded" is therefore a synecdoche for the entire list of applicable injunctions.
Titus 2:7
in all things showing thyself an ensample of good works; in thy doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity,
This entire verse reiterates instructions already given to others, above; but here is the additional thought that Titus is to exemplify in himself the conduct, demeanor and virtues enjoined upon others. As Gould well said, "It is evident that Paul is as fully concerned with Titus' teaching as with his conduct." J. Glenn Gould, op. cit., p. 680.
Gravity… See under Titus 2:2.
Titus 3:14
And let our people also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.
The natural inference of this seems to be that Titus had a fund from which to supply such things as Paul requested for Apollos and Zenas; and, if this
Titus 3:3
For we also once were foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another.
Just as seven Christian virtues are given in Titus 3:1-2, there are seven negative qualities listed here,
Titus 3:8
Faithful is the saying, and concerning these things I desire that thou affirm confidently, to the end that they who have believed God may be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men:
Faithful is the saying…
1 Peter 1:19
but with precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot, even the blood of Christ:
Again, Peter appropriates the corresponding Old Testament figure in describing the glorious redemption of the Christians. As Polkinghorne said:
The Passover
