Isaiah 2:2 — to all coming times. Hence, the expression came to denote, by way of eminence, the times of the Messiah, and is frequently used in the New Testament, as well as the Old, to designate those times; see Acts 2:17; compare Joel 2:28; Heb 1:2; 1 Peter 1:5, 1Pe 1:20; 1 John 2:18; Genesis 49:1; Micah 4:1; Deuteronomy 4:30; Jeremiah 48:47; Daniel 11:28.The expressions which follow are figurative, and cannot well be interpreted as relating to any other events than the times of the Messiah. They refer to
Isaiah 41:19 — desolate wilderness he should plant the cedar, the acacia, the myrtle, and the fir-tree, and should make the whole distance a grove, where fountains would bubble along their way, and streams burst forth from the hills (compare the notes at Isaiah 32:15).The cedar - The large and beautiful cedar, with lofty height, and extended branches such as grew on Lebanon (compare Isaiah 9:10, note; Isaiah 37:24, note).The shittah-tree - This is the Hebrew name without change, שׁטה shı̂ṭṭâh. The Vulgate is
Isaiah 49:1 — qualifications for his work, and to the assurances that his salvation would be extended to them (compare Isaiah 41:1). The Redeemer here is to be regarded as having already come in the flesh, and as having been rejected and despised by the Jews (see Isaiah 49:4-5), and as now turning to the Gentile world, and proffering salvation to them. The time when this is supposed to occur, therefore, as seen by the prophet, is when the Messiah had preached in vain to his own countrymen, and when there was a manifest fitness
Isaiah 50 overview — true cause of their suffering, is the design of this portion of the chapter. In this, God says:1. That their sufferings were not the result of mere will, or of caprice, on his part, as a husband often puts away his wife without any good reason Isaiah 50:1.2. There was a reason for their rejection, and that reason was, their sins. They had brought all these calamities Upon themselves and had, in fact sold themselves.3. It was not for want of power on the part of God to save them. His hand was not shortened,
Isaiah 66:1 — The heaven is my throne - (See the notes at Isaiah 57:15). Here he is represented as having his seat or throne there. He speaks as a king. heaven is the place where he holds his court; from where he dispenses his commands; and from where he surveys all his works (compare 2 Chronicles 6:18; Matthew 5:34).
Isaiah 66:6 — temple and city were about to be destroyed by the Romans; when the voice of Yahweh would be heard in the city and at the temple, declaring the punishment which he would bring on those who had cast out and rejected the followers of the Messiah Isaiah 66:5; and when, as a result of this, the news of Salvation was to be rapidly spread throughout the pagan world.This is the opinion, also, of Vitringa. The phrase rendered here ‘a voice of noise’ (שׁאון קול qôl shâ'ôn), means properly the voice of a tumultuous
Daniel 7:1 — In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon - On the character and reign of Belshazzar, see Introduction to Daniel 5:0 Section II. He was the last of the kings of Babylon, and this fact may cast some light on the disclosures made in the dream.Daniel had a dream - Margin, as in Hebrew, saw. He saw a series of events in vision when he was asleep. The dream refers to
Hosea 10:13 — prohibiting them, and goes on unconcerned in impenitence, he is like one who, after harvest, eats the fruits stored up.”Ye have eaten the fruit of lies - They had been full of “lies” Hosea 4:1-2; Hosea 7:3; they had “lied” against God by hypocrisy Hosea 5:7; Hosea 6:7; Hosea 7:16; Hosea 10:4 and idolatry; they had “spoken lies against Him” Hosea 7:13; by denying that He gave them what He bestowed upon them, and ascribing it to their idols Hosea 2:5, Hosea 2:12. All iniquity is a lie. Such then should
Hosea 7:13 — His God. Oft as He redeemed, so often did they traduce Him. Such was the history of the passage through the wilderness; such, of the period under the Judges; such had it been recently, when God delivered Israel by the hand of Jereboam II 2 Kings 14:25-27. The word, “I have redeemed,” denotes “habitual oft-renewed deliverance,” “that He was their constant Redeemer, from whom they had found help, did still find it, and might yet look to find it, if they did not, by their ill behavior, stop the course
Numbers 6:1-21 — only regulate one already familiar to the Israelites Numbers 6:2.Numbers 6:2A Nazarite - Strictly, Nazirite. This term signifies “separated” i. e., as the words following show, “unto God.” It became a technical term at an early date; compare Judges 13:5, Judges 13:7; Judges 16:17.Numbers 6:3Liquor of grapes - i. e. a drink made of grape-skins macerated in water.Numbers 6:4From the kernels even to the husk - A sour drink was made from the stones of unripe grapes; and cakes were also made of the husks
Obadiah 1:18 — presagiaban sacrificios por el pecado. ¿La "casa de José" expresa lo mismo en otras palabras? ¿O significa que, después de esa primera destrucción de Jerusalén, Efraín debería volver a unirse con Judá? Asaf une, como uno, "los hijos de Jacob y José" Salmo 77:15, Israel y José Salmo 80:1; Israel, Jacob, José Salmo 81:4. Zacarías Zacarías 10:6 después del cautiverio, habla de "la casa de Judá" y "la casa de José", como juntas formando un todo. Amós, casi al mismo tiempo, habla dos veces de Efraín Amós 5:15;
Malachi 3:1 — de la Trinidad, y lo que hace el Uno, los otros Dos, ya que los Tres son de una naturaleza, poder y operación ". De donde Cristo, para no dar excusas a los judíos para hablar en contra de Él antes de tiempo, lo refiere, como lo hace su vida Juan 6:57. Su doctrina Juan 7:16 palabras Juan 3:11; Juan 5:43; Juan 8:38, Juan 8:4, Juan 8:47, Juan 8:55; Juan 12:49; Juan 14:1, Juan 14:24 y funciona Juan 4:34; Juan 5:19-2, Juan 5:26, Juan 5:3, Juan 5:36; Juan 6:38; Juan 8:28; Juan 9:4;
Malachi 4:2 — vienen al mundo". "Principalmente, Malaquías habla de la segunda venida de nuestro Señor, cuando Hebreos 9:28. “A los que lo buscan se les aparecerá por segunda vez para salvación”. Matthew 3:17 — A voice from heaven - A voice from God. This was probably heard by all who were present. This voice, or sound, was repeated on the mount of transfiguration, Matthew 17:5; Luke 9:35-36; 2 Peter 1:17. It was also heard just before his death, and was then supposed by many to be thunder, John 12:25-30. It was a public declaration that Jesus was the Messiah.My beloved Son - This is the title which God himself gave to Jesus.
Acts 12:23 — And immediately the angel of the Lord - Diseases and death axe in the Scriptures often attributed to an angel. See 2 Samuel 24:16; 1 Chronicles 21:12, 1Ch 21:15, 1 Chronicles 21:20, 1 Chronicles 21:27; 2 Chronicles 32:21. It is not intended that there was a miracle in this case, but it certainly is intended by the sacred writer that his death was a divine judgment on him for his receiving homage as a god. Josephus
Acts 9:2 — miles northeast of Jerusalem, and about one 190 miles southeast of Antioch. It is in the midst of an extensive plain, abounding with cypress and palm-trees, and extremely fertile. It is watered by the river Barrady, anciently called “Abana,” 2 Kings 5:12. About 5 miles from the city is a place called the “meeting of the waters,” where the Barrady is joined by another river, and thence is divided by art into several streams that flow through the plain. These streams, six or seven in number, are conveyed
Romans 13:11 — the gospel dawns. The Sun of righteousness has arisen. It is “time,” therefore, for people to cast off the deeds of darkness, and rise to life, and purity, and action; compare Acts 17:30-31. The same idea is beautifully presented in 1 Thessalonians 5:5-8. The meaning is,” Hitherto we have walked in darkness and in sin. Now we walk in the light of the gospel. We know our duty. We are sure that the God of light is around us, and is a witness of all we do. We are going soon to meet him, and it becomes
Romans 7:9 — alarm. The state to which he refers here must be doubtless that to which he himself alludes elsewhere, when he deemed himself to be righteous, depending on his own works, and esteeming himself to be blameless, Philippians 3:4-6; Acts 23:1; Acts 26:4-5. It means that he was then free from those agitations and alarms which he afterward experienced when he was brought under conviction for sin. At that time, though he had the Law, and was attempting to obey it, yet he was unacquainted with its spiritual
