Exodus 25:10-16 — (compare Exodus 37:1-5). The ark is uniformly designated in Exodus the ark of the testimony. Elsewhere it is called the testimony, the ark of the covenant (most frequently in Deuteronomy and the other books of the Old Testament), the ark of the lord, the ark of god, the ark
Psalms 10:3 — secret of it, and obtained the object of his wishes. The natural explanation of the manner in which he did this is, that it was by plunder, rapine, or spoil, for this would be most literally expressed by the word used. Compare Proverbs 1:19; Proverbs 15:27; Jeremiah 6:13; Jeremiah 8:10; Ezekiel 22:12. It might be, however, by unjust gains, or dishonest dealing, 1 Samuel 8:3; Isaiah 33:15; Isaiah 57:17. The word bless here may mean, as in the margin, blesses himself; or, as Prof. Alexander supposes,
Psalms 42:4 — overwhelmed with sorrow; he was away from the place of worship - the house of God; he no longer went with others with solemn steps to the sanctuary, but he hoped and expected again to be permitted to do so; and, in view of this, he calls on his soul Psalms 42:5 not to be cast down. This interpretation, referring it to the future, also brings this part of the psalm into harmony with the subsequent part Psalms 42:8, where the author of the psalm confidently expresses the same hope.I went with them to the house
Leviticus 23:9-22 — right in this place. The offering which was waved Leviticus 7:30 was most likely a small sheaf of barley, the grain which is first ripe. The first fruits of the wheat harvest were offered seven weeks later in the loaves of Pentecost. See Leviticus 23:15-17. The two offerings thus figure the very commencement and the completion of the grain harvest; compare Ruth 1:22; Ruth 2:23.Leviticus 23:11On the morrow after the sabbath - It is most probable that these words denote the 16th of Abib, the day after
Isaiah 10:29 — valley are two hills of a conical form, having steep rocky sides, which are probably the rocks mentioned, in connection with Jonathan’s adventure, as a narrow defile or way between the rock Bozez on the one side, and Seneh on tbe other; 1 Samuel 14:4-5. This valley appears at a later time to have been the dividing line between the tribes of Ephraim and Benjamin, for Geba on the south side of this valley was the northern limit of Judah and Benjamin 2 Kings 23:8; while Bethel on its north side was on
Isaiah 18:4 — appearing to oppose them, but keeping as calm, and as still, as if I seemed to favor their plans - as the sun shines on the herb, and the gentle dew falls on the grass, until the proper time for me to interpose and defeat them shall arise Isaiah 18:5-6.I will consider - I will look on; that is, I will not now interpose and disarrange their plans before they are complete. We learn here, (1) That God sees the plans of the wicked; (2) That he sees them “mature” them without attempting then to interpose
Isaiah 30:6 — The burden of the beasts of the south - The word ‘south’ here refers doubtless to the country to the south of Judea; and particularly to Egypt. Thus it is used in Daniel 11:5-6. The phrase ‘beasts of the south,’ here refers to the animals that were traveling to Egypt. Isaiah, in vision, sees the caravan heavily laden with treasures pursuing a southern direction on its way to Egypt. The word ‘burden’ is used in two senses,
Isaiah 57:6 — favor which the gods whom you worship can give. You have chosen that as your inheritance, and by the results of that you must abide.Of the stream - The word rendered here ‘stream’ (נחל nachal), means either a stream, or a rivulet of water Numbers 34:5; Joshua 15:4-47; or it means a valley with a brook or torrent; a low place with water. Here it means evidently the latter - as it cannot be supposed they would worship in a stream, though they undoubtedly worshipped in a vale or low place where there
Hosea 1:9 — the one is, there is the other; nor can the one be without the other. This was the original covenant with Israel: “I will be your God, and you shall be My people” Leviticus 26:12; Exodus 6:7; and as such, it is often repeated in Jeremiah Jeremiah 11:4-5; Jeremiah 24:7; Jeremiah 30:22; Jeremiah 31:1, Jeremiah 31:33; Jeremiah 32:38 and Ezekiel Ezekiel 11:20; Ezekiel 14:11; Ezekiel 36:28; Ezekiel 37:23, Ezekiel 37:27. Afterward, this is expressed still more affectionately. “I will be a Father unto you,
Hosea 10:10 — one, whose longing could not be satisfied, until the punishment were executed. So He says, “I will ease Me of Mine adversaries” Isaiah 1:24; “Mine anger shall be accomplished and I will cause My fury to rest upon them, and I will be comforted” Ezekiel 5:13.And the people shall be gathered against him - “As all the other tribes were gathered against Benjamin at Gibeah to destroy it, so, although that war did not overtake them, now “against him,” i. e., against Ephraim or the ten tribes, “shall be gathered”
Numbers 11:4-35 — Kibroth-hattavah.Numbers 11:4The mixt multitude - The word in the original resembles our “riff-raff,” and denotes a mob of people scraped together. It refers here to the multitude of strangers (see Exodus 12:38) who had followed the Israelites from Egypt.Numbers 11:5The natural dainties of Egypt are set forth in this passage with the fullness and relish which bespeak personal experience.Numbers 11:6-7There is nothing at all ... - literally, “Nought at all have we except that our eyes are unto this manna;” i. e.
Micah 1:2 — Hear, all ye people - Literally, “hear, ye peoples, all of them.” Some 140, or 150 years had flowed by, since Micaiah, son of Imlah, had closed his prophecy in these words. And now they burst out anew. From age to age the word of God holds its course, ever receiving new fulfillments, never dying out, until the end shall come. The
Micah 7:5-6 — friendship, kindred, gratitude, nature. “Everyone ‘seeketh his own’.” Times of trial and of outward harass increase this; so that God’s visitations are seasons of the most frightful recklessness as to everything but sell: So had God foretold Deuteronomy 28:53; so it was in the siege of Samaria 2 Kings 6:28, and in that of Jerusalem both by the Chaldeans Lamentations 4:3-16 and by the Romans . When the soul has lost the love of God, all other is but sceming love, since “natural affection” is from Him, and
Zephaniah 3:8 — is summed up in these words; that is, since neither My mercies toward you, nor My chastisement of others, lead you to obey Me, “therefore” the time shall be, when My Providence shall not seem to be over you, nor My presence among you (see Hosea 3:3-5); but then, “wait ye for Me” earnestly, intensely, perseveringly, “until the day, that I rise up to the prey.” “The day” is probably in the first instance, the deliverance from Babylon. But the words seem to be purposely enlarged, that they may embrace
Malachi 1:14 — the present day also. They know neither God or themselves. The relation is summed up in those words to a saint , “Knowest thou well, Who I am, and who thou art? I am He Who Is, and thou art she who is not.” So Job says in the presence of God Job 42:5-6, “I have heard of Thee by the hearing of the ear, but now mine eye seeth Thee: wherefore I abhor myself and repent in dust and ashes.” To correct this, God, from the beginning, insists on the title which He gives Himself. (Deuteronomy 10:16-17; Deuteronomy
John 2:11 — did not believe on him beforehand, but that their faith was confirmed or strengthened. They saw a miracle, and it satisfied them that he was the Messiah. “Before this” they “believed” on the testimony of John, and from conversation with Jesus John 1:35-51; now they saw that he was invested with almighty power, and their faith was established. From this narrative we may learn:1. That marriage is honorable, and that Jesus, if sought, will not refuse his presence and blessing on such an occasion.2. On
Esta doctrina a menudo se enseña en el Nuevo Testamento, y a menudo se insta al argumento de que, por lo tanto, los cristianos deben ser devotos a Dios; ver 1 Corintios 7:23; 1Pe 1: 18-19 ; 1 Pedro 2:9; 2 Pedro 2:1; Apocalipsis 5:9; vea la nota en Hechos 20:28. 1 John 2:18 — de (ἀντί anti) en la composición es: (1) Sobre-contra ”, como ἀντιτάσσειν antitassein; (2) Contrariamente a ”, como ἀντιλέγειν antilegeína; (3) Reciprocidad, como ἀνταποδίδωμι antapodidōmi; (4) Sustitución, ”como ἀντιβασιλεύς antibasileus; (5) El lugar del rey, o ἀνθύπατος anthupatos - "procónsul".
