2 Kings 24:17 — Mattaniah, son of Josiah and brother of Jehoahaz, but thirteen years his junior, adopted a name significant of the blessings promised by Jeremiah to the reign of a king whose name should be “Yahweh, our righteousness” Jeremiah 23:5-8.

2 Kings 6:30 — Sackcloth - Jehoram hoped perhaps to avert Yahweh’s anger, as his father had done 1 Kings 21:29. But there was no spirit of self-humiliation, or of true pentitence in his heart 2 Kings 5:7. See the next verse.

1 Chronicles 29:23 — The throne of David is called here “the throne of the Lord,” as in 1 Chronicles 28:5 it is called “the throne of the kingdom of the Lord,” because God had set it up and had promised to establish it.

2 Chronicles 23:8 — And took every man his men ... - i. e. the relief, already organized by Jehoiada into three bodies 2 Chronicles 23:4-5, was further strengthened by the members of the outgoing “course,” who were associated in the work to be done.

2 Chronicles 7:12 — An house of sacrifice - This expression does not elsewhere occur. Its meaning, however, is clear. God declares that Solomon’s Temple is the place whereunto all Israelites were commanded to bring their burnt-offerings and sacrifices (see Deuteronomy 12:5-6).

Nehemiah 6:12 — The existence of a party among the Jews who sided with Sanballat and lent themselves to his schemes, is here for the first time indicated. Compare Nehemiah 6:14, Nehemiah 6:17-19; Nehemiah 13:4-5, Nehemiah 13:28.

Psalms 119:114 — Thou art my hiding place - See the notes at Psalms 32:7, where the same expression occurs.And my shield - See Psalms 5:12, note; Psalms 84:11, note.I hope in thy word - See Psalms 119:74, Psalms 119:81.

Jeremiah 27:7 — His son, and his son’s son - Evil-Merodach and Nabonadius (see Daniel 5:1 note).Shall serve themselves of him - See the marginal reference. After long servitude to the Persian and Median kings, the Selucidae ruined the remains of Babylon.

Ezekiel 15:2 — The vine ... - The image is grounded on a well-known figure Psalms 80:8; Isaiah 5:0. The comparison is not between the vine and other trees, but between the wood of the vine and the wood of other trees.

Luke 2:43 — Had fulfilled the days - The days of the Passover. These were eight days in all - one day for killing the paschal lamb, and seven days for the observance of the feast of unleavened bread, Exodus 12:15; Leviticus 23:5-6.

John 10:33 — For blasphemy - See the notes at Matthew 9:3.Makest thyself God - See the notes at John 5:18. This shows how they understood what he had said.Makest thyself - Dost claim to be God, or thy language implies this.

Acts 19:23 — No small stir - No little excitement, disturbance, or tumult τάραχος tarachos. Compare Acts 17:4-5. “About that way.” Respecting the doctrines of Christianity which Paul preached. See the notes on Acts 9:2; Acts 18:26; Acts 19:9.

Revelation 11:16 — And the four and twenty elders which sat ... - See the notes on Revelation 4:4.Fell upon their faces, and worshipped God - Prostrated themselves before him - the usual form of profound adoration. See the notes on Revelation 5:8-14.

1 Samuel 22:6 — Under a tree in Ramah - Rather, “under the tamarisk-tree on the high place,” where he always held such meetings. It was a kind of parliament in the open air, and all his tribesmen gathered round him. (Compare Judges 4:5.)

2 Samuel 18:2 — A third part - This seems to have been a favorite division with the Hebrew commanders (see Judges 7:16; Judges 9:43; 1 Samuel 11:11; 2 Kings 11:5-6) and with the Philistines also 1 Samuel 13:17.

2 Samuel 3:17 — Ye sought for David ... - Compare 1 Samuel 18:5. It was only by Abner’s great influence that the elders of Israel had been restrained hitherto from declaring for David, and this accounts for Ish-bosheth’s helpless submission to his uncle’s dictation.
