Search for "Matthew 17:27"
Romans 1:14-16
1:14-16: I am debtor both to Greeks and to Barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. 15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you also that are in Rome. 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel: for it is the power of God
Romans 11:25
11:25: For I would not, brethren, have you ignorant of this mystery, lest ye be wise in your own conceits, that a hardening in part hath befallen Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in;
Many who are interested in Israel’s future
Romans 11:33-36
11:33-36: O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out! 34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? 35 or who hath first given
Romans 8:12-14
8:12-14: So then, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh: 13 for if ye live after the flesh, ye must die; but if by the Spirit ye put to death the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit
1 Corinthians 1:14
1:14-17: I thank God that I baptized none of you, save Crispus and Gaius; 15 lest any man should say that ye were baptized into my name. 16 And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other. 17 For Christ
1 Corinthians 1:28-31
1:28-31: and the base things of the world, and the things that are despised, did God choose, (yea) and the things that are not, that he might bring to nought the things that are: 29 that no flesh should glory before God. 30 But of him are ye in Christ
1 Corinthians 1:5
1:5: that in everything ye were enriched in him, in all utterance and all knowledge;
This verse should be read in conjunction with verse 26. Paul knew these Christians were not from the upper crust of Corinthian culture. Most of them were poor or from
1 Corinthians 10:16
10:16b: The bread which we break, is it not a communion of the body of Christ?
Here we find an expected reference to bread, the other essential part of the Lord’s Supper. Bread reminds Christians that a sacrificial body was given in their place
1 Corinthians 10:18
10:18: Behold Israel after the flesh: have not they that eat the sacrifices communion with the altar?
“Israel after the flesh” described the descendants of Abraham and especially the Old Testament nation of Israel. When the Old Testament
1 Corinthians 10:3
10:3: and did all eat the same spiritual food;
As stated in the commentary on verses 1-2, the Hebrews passed through the sea, were protected by a cloud, and became Moses’ disciples (each of these events has a corresponding point with Christianity).
1 Corinthians 11:24
11:24: and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, This is my body, which is for you: this do in remembrance of me.
Paul knew many things about the institution of the Lord’s Supper (verse 23) and this knowledge included the specifics
1 Corinthians 11:28
11:28: But let a man prove himself, and so let him eat of the bread, and drink of the cup.
If the Corinthians were to avoid partaking of the Communion in an unworthy manner (verse 27), they had to “examine” (KJV) or “prove”
1 Corinthians 11:30
11:30: For this cause many among you are weak and sickly, and not a few sleep.
As noted in the comments on verse 29, this congregation had several problems. It was a place of strife and division (verses 18-19), Christians refused to share their food
1 Corinthians 12:15-16
12:15-16: If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; it is not therefore not of the body. 16 And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; it is not therefore not of the body.
These verses are
1 Corinthians 12:23
12:23: and those (parts) of the body, which we think to be less honorable, upon these we bestow more abundant honor; and our uncomely (parts) have more abundant comeliness;
If this verse is carefully read, it is immediately apparent that God did not
1 Corinthians 14:14-15
14:14-15: For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding
1 Corinthians 14:16-17
14:16-17: Else if thou bless with the spirit, how shall he that filleth the place of the unlearned say the Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he knoweth not what thou sayest? 17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
In
1 Corinthians 14:4
14:4: He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
This verse contrasts the gifts of “tongue speaking” and “prophesy. Here Paul reminded the Corinthians that tongue speaking was less
1 Corinthians 2:9-10
2:9-10: but as it is written, Things which eye saw not, and ear heard not, And (which) entered not into the heart of man, Whatsoever things God prepared for them that love him. 10 But unto us God revealed (them) through the Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth
1 Corinthians 9:21
9:21: to them that are without law, as without law, not being without law to God, but under law to Christ, that I might gain them that are without law
Verses 20-22 provide several illustrations of how Paul “became all things to all men”
