Psalms 141:9 — Keep. Same root as "watch"in Psalms 141:3 . (Hebrew. shamreni.) snares. Authorized Version, 1611, read "snares" (singular) Since 1769, "snares" (plural) Hebrew text is singular. gins = traps. Short for "engine" = an ingenious contrivance. "
Psalms 37:9 — be cut off: i.e. die. Used of Messiah (Daniel 9:26 ), whose resurrection was sure. (Psalms 16:0 , &c). the earth = the land, as in Psalms 37:3 , Psalms 37:29 , Psalms 37:34 .
Isaiah 27:13 — ready to perish. So the end will be like the beginning. See Deuteronomy 26:5 . holy. See note on Exodus 3:5 . mount = mountain. hasty fruit = early fig [becomes]. eateth it up = swalloweth it.
Isaiah 38:14 — Like a crane or a swallow: or, like a twittering swallow. mourn. See note on Psalms 55:17 . Compare Ezekiel 7:16 . undertake = be a surety. Compare Job 17:3 ("put me in surety").
Isaiah 64:7 — hast hid = hadst hidden. Compare Isaiah 45:15 ; Isaiah 53:3 ; Isaiah 54:8 ; Isaiah 57:17 ; Isaiah 59:2 . Reference to Pentateuch (Deuteronomy 31:17 , Deuteronomy 31:18 , Deuteronomy 31:20 ). App-92 .
Isaiah 66:10 — Rejoice ye with Jerusalem. The promises, of Isaiah 1:27 ; Isaiah 2:1-5 , are now at length to be fulfilled. mourn. As for one lost, or dead. See note on Isaiah 3:26 .
Ezekiel 9:4 — the LORD. Hebrew. Jehovah. App-4 . set a mark. Compare Revelation 7:3 ; Revelation 9:4 ; Revelation 13:16 , Revelation 13:17 ; Revelation 20:4 . mark. Hebrew Occurs elsewhere only in Job 31:35 .
Hosea 12:13 — by a prophet: i.e. Moses. Reference to Pentateuch (Exodus 12:50 , Exodus 12:51 ; Exodus 13:3 .Numbers 12:6-8 . App-92 . Compare Deuteronomy 18:15 ). preserved = kept, as in Hosea 12:12 .
Hosea 2:2 — your mother. Gomer (Hosea 1:3 ). The ten tribes personified by their royal capital. her husband. Compare Jeremiah 31:32 . whoredoms . . . adulteries = idolatries. See note on Hosea 1:2 . between her breasts = her embraces.
Jonah 2:7 — fainted = swooned, or became unconscious to all else. Compare Psalms 77:3 .Lamentations 2:12 , From 'ataph, to cover or involve in darkness. the LORD. Hebrew. Jehovah. (with 'eth) = Jehovah Him-self. App-4 .
Micah 4:9 — why dost thou Cry. ? This refers to the birth-pangs of the new nation which will be brought forth in that day and at that time. Compare Isaiah 13:8 ; Isaiah 21:3 , &c.
Haggai 2:3 — Who is left . . . ? = Who is there among you, the remnant? Evidently there were some present who had seen it. Compare Ezra 3:12 . this house. The Temple is regarded as one throughout. first = primitive.
Matthew 16:1 — Pharisees . . . Sadducees. See App-120 . came = having come to [Him]. a sign. Compare Matthew 12:38 . from = out of. Greek. ek. heaven = the heaven, or sky (singular), same as in verses: Matthew 2:3 .
Mark 14:65 — buffet = cuff. See note on Matthew 26:67 . did strike = kept striking. with the palms of their hands . Greek. rapisma with smart blows. Occurs only here and in John 18:22 ; John 19:3 .
