Nehemiah 1:9 — turn unto Me. National repentance was ever the one great condition of Israel's national blessing (Deuteronomy 30:2 , &c.); and is still the condition. Compare Acts 3:19-21 , which, with Acts 28:17 , Acts 28:23 , was the last national call.
Nehemiah 13:2 — Because they (plural) Num 22:56 . Deuteronomy 23:3 , Deuteronomy 23:4 . children = sons. hired Balaam. Numbers 22:5 , Numbers 22:6 . Joshua 24:9 , Joshua 24:10 . them (singular), i.e. Israel. curse. Hebrew. kalal = reproach, imprecate. God. Hebrew. Elohim. App-4 .

Psalms 68:35 — Thou art terrible. Supply Ellipsis thus: "[To be feared] is God from His Sanctuary". Thy holy places. Septuagint and Vulg, read the singular. It is the plural of majesty. holy. See note on Exodus 3:6 . power. Hebrew, plural = mighty, or abundant power.
Psalms 83:18 — men: Israel. JEHOVAH. One of three places where, in Authorized Version, this name is transliterated and printed in large capital letters (small in Revised Version) See App-48 . Compare Exodus 6:3 and Isaiah 26:4 . MOST HIGH. Hebrew. Elyon. App-4 .
Ecclesiastes 12:1 — now = also. Creator. Plural of Majesty = the [great] Creator, or a reference to the Trinity. evil days = days of the misfortune: i.e. affliction and death. Hebrew. ra'a' . App-44 . i.e. the days described in following verses. pleasure. See note on Ecclesiastes 3:1 .
Ecclesiastes 2:23 — travail = toil that brings about fatigue. The same word as in Ecclesiastes 1:13 ; Ecclesiastes 2:26 ; Ecclesiastes 3:10 ; Ecclesiastes 4:8 ; Ecclesiastes 5:14 . Not the same word as in Ecclesiastes 4:4 , Ecclesiastes 4:6 . Occurs only in Ecclesiastes.
Ecclesiastes 4:1 — under the sun. See note on Ecclesiastes 1:3 . side. Hebrew "hand": put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause), App-6 , for the violence proceeding from it. they: i.e. the oppressed. The phrase repeated for emphasis. Figure of speech Epistrophe. App-6 .
Song of Solomon 5:8 — I charge = I adjure. you. See note on Song of Solomon 2:7 . sick of love = love-sick. of = with. love. Same word and sense as in Song of Solomon 2:7 ; Song of Solomon 3:5 , and Song of Solomon 8:4 .
Isaiah 1:9 — Except, &c. The first passage in Isaiah quoted in N.T. (Romans 9:29 ). very small. Hebrew. kim'at. See note on Proverbs 5:14 . as Sodom. Reference to Pentateuch (Genesis 19:1-29 . Deuteronomy 29:23 .) Compare Isaiah 3:9 , for the reason.
Isaiah 40:14 — (Isaiah 40:12-14 ) Who. . . . Who. . . With whom. . . ? Isaiah 40:12-14 are introductory: while the Figure of speech Erotesis emphasizes the importance of Him Who speaks. instructed Him = made Him understand. path. See note on Isaiah 2:3 . taught = trained. Hebrew. lamad.
Isaiah 52:12 — ye shall not go out with haste. Reference to Pentateuch, where it was otherwise (only here, Exodus 12:33 , Exodus 12:39 , and Deuteronomy 16:3 ). the God of Israel. See note on Isaiah 29:23 . rereward = rear-guard. Compare Isaiah 58:8 .
Isaiah 54:8 — a little wrath = in an overflow of wrath. I hid My face. Reference to Pentateuch (Deuteronomy 31:17 , Deuteronomy 31:18 ). Compare Isaiah 8:17 ; Isaiah 53:3 ; Isaiah 64:7 . See App-92 . everlasting kindness. See note on "ancient", Isaiah 44:7 .
