Isaiah 16:4
Let Mine outcasts, &c. Some codices, with Aramaean, Septuagint, and Syriac, read "Let the outcasts", &c.
dwell = sojourn. Compare 1 Samuel 22:3 , 1 Samuel 22:4 .

extortioner. Hebrew. muz. Occurs only here.
oppressors = treaders down. Hebrew. ramas. Occurs only here.
Isaiah 21:1
burden. The fifth of the seven burdens.
of = relating to. Genitive of Relation. App-17 .
the sea. The waters of the Euphrates in flood were so called, as the Nile was (Isaiah 19:6 ). Compare Revelation 17:3 , Revelation 17:15 .
whirlwinds = storms.
pass = sweep.
Isaiah 22:20
in that day: i.e. in the day when this prophecy will be fulfilled. Compare Isaiah 22:25 .
Eliakim = Whom God sets up. Hezekiah's minister. Probably superseded by Shebna in the evil days of Manasseh. See Isaiah 36:3 , Isaiah 36:22 ; Isaiah 37:2 .
Isaiah 26:8
we waited. See note on Isaiah 25:9 .
soul. Hebrew. nephesh . App-13 .
remembrance. Reference to Pentateuch. Same as "memorial" in Exodus 3:15 . The words are quoted again in Psalms 102:12 ; Psalms 135:13 and Hosea 12:5 , and nowhere else. App-92 .
Isaiah 64:1
Oh, &c. Figure of speech Euche. Isaiah 6:0 4 is joined to Isaiah 6:0 3 by the Massoretic pointing.
flow down = quake. The reference is to Sinai in these verses. Compare Psalms 68:7 , Psalms 68:8 . Judges 5:4 , Judges 5:5 .
Jeremiah 1:15
all. Frequently put (as here) by Figure of speech Synecdoche (of the Whole), App-6 , for the principal or greater part.
set, &c. Where the kings of Judah had sat to judge and rule. Fulfilled in Jeremiah 39:3 , for here the setting is hostile.
Jeremiah 20:12
LORD of hosts. See note on Jeremiah 6:6 , and 1 Samuel 1:3 .
triest = testest.
the righteous = a righteous one.
reins = kidneys. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Subject), for thoughts.
heart. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Subject), for the affections.
Jeremiah 25:3
thirteenth year of Josiah. Compare Jeremiah 1:2 .
the three and twentieth year: i.e. of Jeremiah's prophesying: 18 years under Josiah + 3 months under Jehoahaz + 4 years under Jehoiakim.

Jeremiah 3:15
pastors. Literally shepherds; but used in Jeremiah of kings, priests, and prophets, who were the guides of the people. See Jeremiah 2:8 ; Jeremiah 3:15 ; Jeremiah 10:21 ; Jeremiah 23:1 , Jeremiah 23:2 , Jeremiah 23:4 ; Jeremiah 25:34 ; Jer 35:36 .
Jeremiah 31:35
giveth the sun, &c. Reference to Pentateuch (Genesis 1:16 ).
ordinances = statutes. Reference to Pentateuch (Genesis 8:22 ). Compare Jeremiah 33:20 , Jeremiah 33:25 .
divideth = -stirreth up, or exciteth.
The LORD of Hosts. See note on Jeremiah 6:6 , and 1 Samuel 1:3 .
Jeremiah 52:23
ninety and six. There were 100 "round about"; Compare 2 Chronicles 3:16 ; 2 Chronicles 4:13 ; with 1 Kings 7:20 .
on a side. Hebrew. ruach. See App-9 . = towards the air, or open air. The other four being behind, out of sight.
Jeremiah 9:22
Speak. This shows that Jerome's Hebrew text was unpointed, for he read d-b-r as deber = pestilence, instead of dabar = word, or dabber = speak.
open field. Some codices, with one early printed edition, read "ground".
none shall gather them. Compare Psalms 79:3 .
Ezekiel 14:3
Son of man . See note on Ezekiel 2:1 .
men. Hebrew, plural of 'enosh . App-14 .
idols = manufactured idols.
iniquity = perversity. Hebrew ' dvah. App-44 .
before their face . Instead of God's law, according to Deuteronomy 6:8 ; Deuteronomy 11:18 ; and Proverbs 3:21-23 .
Ezekiel 28:7
strangers = aliens, or foreigners: the Babylonians were noted for their barbarity. Compare Ezekiel 30:11 ; Ezekiel 31:12 .Isaiah 1:7 ; Isaiah 25:2 ).
defile = profane.
brightness = splendour: occurs only here, and Ezekiel 28:17 . See note on Genesis 3:1 and App-19 .
Ezekiel 36:19

kiss the calves. Kissing was fundamental in all heathen idolatry. It is the root of the Latin ad-orare = to [bring something to] the mouth. "A pure lip" (Zephaniah 3:9 ) implies more than language.
Hosea 8:9
gone up. Compare Hosea 5:13 ; Hosea 7:11 .
a = [as] a. wild ass. Compare Isaiah 1:3 .
hired lovers = paid the love-fee. Comparing idolatry to whoredom. Compare Ezekiel 16:33 , Ezekiel 16:34 ; and see 2 Chronicles 28:20 , 2 Chronicles 28:21 .
Habakkuk 3:5
Before Him went, &c. Supply the logical Ellipsis : "[As He went forth to conquer for His People] before Him went", &c. See Exodus 28:27 . Psalms 68:1 , Psalms 68:2 .
burning coals: or, lightning Compare Psalms 18:8 ; Psalms 76:3 ; Psalms 78:48 .
