Psalms 103:14 — frame = formation. He remembereth. Compare Isaiah 29:16 ; Isaiah 45:9 , Isaiah 45:10 : i.e. God remembers what man forgets (i.e. our infirmities); and He forgets what man remembers (i.e. our sins). See Isaiah 43:25 ; Isaiah 44:22 .Jeremiah 31:34 . Compare Isaiah 55:8 . dust. See Genesis 2:7 ; Genesis 3:19 . Ecclesiastes 12:7 .
Proverbs 11:10 — When it goeth well, &c. Illustrations: Hezekiah (2 Chronicles 29:3-36 ; 2 Chronicles 30:26 ); Nehemiah (Nehemiah 2:0 ; Nehemiah 6:15 ; Nehemiah 8:17 ); Mordecai (Esther 8:15 , Esther 8:16 ). when the wicked perish, &c. Illustrations: Pharaoh (Exodus 15:0 ); Sisera(Judges 5:0 ); Athaliah (2 Kings 11:20 ). the wicked = wicked ones.
Proverbs 11:15 — for a stranger, &c. Christ became surety for His People, and they were "strangers" (Ephesians 2:12 ); and He smarted for it, blessed be His Name! Hebrew. zur, an apostate. See note on Proverbs 5:3 . smart for it = be sore broken. See Psalms 38:8 ; Psalms 69:20 . is sure = is secure. Hebrew. batah. App-69 .
Proverbs 13:2 — man. Hebrew. 'ish . App-14 . eat = get his food: "eat" being put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Effect), App-6 , for what is gained by effort. soul. Hebrew. nephiesh. App-13 . transgressors = traitors, faithless ones. Hebrew. bagad, as in Proverbs 13:15 ; Proverbs 2:22 ; Proverbs 11:3 , Proverbs 11:6 ; Proverbs 16:10 ; Proverbs 21:18 , &c.
Proverbs 3:13 — Happy = Oh, the blessedness, as in Psalms 1:1 . Note the eight occurrences of this Beatitude in Proverbs: Proverbs 3:13 ; Proverbs 8:32 , Proverbs 8:34 (blessed); Proverbs 14:21 ; Proverbs 16:20 ; Proverbs 20:7 (blessed); Proverbs 28:14 ; Proverbs 29:18 . wisdom. Hebrew. chokmah. See note on Proverbs 1:2 . And = yea, or even.
Isaiah 1:20 — for the mouth of the LORD, &c . This sets the seal on this book as a whole, uniting all its parts. It Occurs in the "former" portion (Isaiah 1:20 ), and in the "latter" portion (Isaiah 40:5 , and Isaiah 58:14 ). Compare Isaiah 21:17 ; Isaiah 22:25 ; Isaiah 24:3 ; Isaiah 25:8 . See App-79 .
Isaiah 13:10 — shall not give their light. Quoted in Matthew 24:29 . Shall not celebrate [Thee]. Compare Psalms 19:1-3 ; Psalms 145:10 . Hebrew. halel. Occurs twice in "former" portion (here and in Isaiah 38:18 "celebrate") and four times in "latter" portion (Isaiah 41:16 ; Isaiah 45:25 , "glory"; Isaiah 62:9 ; Isaiah 64:11 , "praise") See App-79 .
Isaiah 15:2 — He: i.e. Moab. Dibon. Now Dhiban. Numbers 21:30 ; Numbers 32:3 , Numbers 32:34 , Numbers 33:46 , Numbers 33:46 . Joshua 13:9 , Joshua 13:17 . Nebo. Now Jebel Neba in Moab, overlooking the Jordan Valley. Medeba. Same name to-day. Compare Numbers 21:30 . Joshua 13:9 , Joshua 13:16 ; 1 Chronicles 19:7 .
Isaiah 17:6 — the LORD God of Israel. Reference to Pentateuch (Exodus 32:27 . Compare Joshua 9:18 , Joshua 9:19 ; Joshua 10:40 , Joshua 10:42 , &c). See note on Isaiah 29:23 . God of Israel. Reference to Pentateuch (Exodus 24:10 . Numbers 16:9 ). Occurs in latter part of Isaiah (Isaiah 41:17 ; Isaiah 45:3 ; Isaiah 48:2 ).
Isaiah 32:9 — ye women. Figure of speech Synecdoche (of Species), "women" being put for the whole nation, now reduced by sin to utter weakness; or, a special message, as in Isaiah 3:16-26 . hear my voice. Reference to Pentateuch (Deuteronomy 4:33 , Deuteronomy 4:36 ), App-92 . careless = confident. Hebrew. batah . App-69 . Used here of self-confidence, in irony.
Jeremiah 22:11 — Shallum the son of Josiah. Josiah had four sons (1 Chronicles 3:15 ). Shallum had another name Jehoahaz. Compare 2 Kings 23:31 , 2 Kings 23:34 . Zedekiah must have been younger than Jehoiakim or Jehoahaz, for he was but twenty-one when he began to reign, and therefore only ten when Jehoiakim began to reign.
Jeremiah 3:12 — toward the north = toward the Northern Kingdom of Israel. cause Mine anger to fall upon you. Hebrew cause My face, or countenance, to fall. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Effect), for the anger manifested by it. Reference to Pentateuch (Genesis 4:5 , Genesis 4:6 ). merciful = gracious, favourable. keep. See note on "reserve", Jeremiah 3:5 .
Jeremiah 7:13 — rising up early and speaking. This phrase is almost peculiar to Jeremiah, where it occurs eleven times (Jeremiah 7:13 , Jeremiah 7:25 ; Jeremiah 11:7 ; Jeremiah 25:3 , Jeremiah 25:4 ; Jeremiah 26:5 ; Jeremiah 29:19 ; Jeremiah 32:33 ; Jeremiah 35:14 , Jeremiah 35:15 ; Jeremiah 44:4 ). Occurs elsewhere only in 2 Chronicles 36:15 .
Jeremiah 7:18 — children = sons. make: or, offer. queen. Some codices, with two early printed editions, read "worship", which is put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Effect), for the goddess to whom the worship was offered. See Jeremiah 19:13 ; Jeremiah 44:19 ; and compare 2 Kings 21:3 , 2Ki 21:5 ; 2 Kings 23:12 , 2 Kings 23:13 .
Ezekiel 36:24 — will bring you, &c. Compare Ezekiel 11:17 ; Ezekiel 34:13 ; Eze 34:37 , Ezekiel 34:21 , Ezekiel 34:25 ; Ezekiel 39:27 , Ezekiel 39:28 , &c. Ref to Pentateuch (Deuteronomy 30:3-6 ). App-92 . into your own land on to your own soil. Hebrew 'ado:oeh. Not the some word as in Ezekiel 36:28 .
Daniel 11:33 — understand = are wise. See Daniel 11:35 with Daniel 12:3 , Daniel 12:10 , where it would be well to use the Hebrew Maskilim, as a proper name. shall fall by the sword: i.e. in the great tribulation which is here described, in part. many . Some codices, with six early printed editions, read this word "many" in the text.
Daniel 7:25 — wear out = afflict. laws = law. time and times, &c.: i.e. three and a half years = one half of the "one week" of Daniel 9:27 . It is repeated as forty-two months ( Rev 11:21 , Revelation 11:3 ). See App-90 and App-91 ; and Compare Daniel 8:14 ; Daniel 12:7 , Daniel 12:11 , Daniel 12:12 .
Joel 2:32 — in mount Zion. Compare Isaiah 46:13 ; Isaiah 59:20 . Obadiah 1:17 . Zechariah 14:1-5 .Romans 11:26 . Jerusalem. As distinct from Mount Zion. See App-68 . deliverance = a delivered remnant. Compare Joel 2:3 . as = according as. hath said: by Joel and other prophets. remnant = an escaped set, shall call = is going to call.
Zechariah 7:3 — speak unto the priests, &c. Reference to Pentateuch (Deuteronomy 17:9 ; Deuteronomy 33:10 ). App-92 . the LORD of hosts. See note on Zechariah 1:3 . in the fifth month. See note on Zechariah 7:5 . as = according as. these so many years = now so many years. Some codices read "seventy years", as in Zechariah 7:5
