1 Chronicles 16:37 — before the ark. This was now in Zion (2 Samuel 6:12-17 ). But the altars and vessels were in the Tabernacle at Gibeon (2 Chronicles 1:3-6 ). Asaph and his brethren. These were left in Zion "before the Ark", while the priests ministered "before the Tabernacle" (see 1 Chronicles 16:39 below), until Divine worship should be reconstructed in the Temple.
1 Chronicles 4:9 — more honourable. Perhaps his going up with Caleb and Othniel against the Canaanites is referred to. See Judges 1:2 , Judges 1:4 , Judges 1:9-15 .Joshua 15:13-19 . Jabez. The transposition of letters in Hebrew may intimate a change of experiences, and mean "may he have pain or grief reversed. " with sorrow. Compare Genesis 3:16 (same word).
2 Chronicles 5:1 — Solomon. Some codices, with one early printed edition, read "the King Solomon". the LORD. Hebrew. Jehovah. App-4 . things . . . dedicated = holy things. See note on Exodus 3:5 . and. Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulgate omit this "and", all. Some codices, with Septuagint and Syriac, omit "all". among the treasures = in the treasuries. God. Hebrew. Elohim. (with Art.) = the [true] God. App-4 .
Nehemiah 13:28 — one of the sons, &c. Joiada the son of Eliashbi was led astray by the degeneracy of his father (Nehemiah 13:4 ), and married the daughter of Sanballat (Nehemiah 2:10 ). Joiada's son was Manasseh, who, according to Josephus ( Antiquities xi. 8, 3), fled to Samaria, where Sanballat built the Samaritan temple at Gerizim, and made Manasseh the high priest of it.
Job 14:1 — Man. Hebrew. 'adam. App-14 . "Man" is to Job 14:1 what Job 14:1 is to the whole paragraph. The Hebrew accent ( Dehi ) emphasizes the word "man", and divides the verse into two members; viz. (1) man and (2) his characteristics which are three: (1) his origin (born in sin), (2) his brevity of life, and (3) his fullness of sorrow.
Psalms 101:1 — Title. A Psalm. Hebrew. mizmor. App-65 . of David. Relating to the true David, and His coming rule to give "rest" to the earth. The king ' s vow to rule in righteousness. Compare 2 Samuel 23:3-5 . mercy = lovingkindness, or grace. mercy and judgment. Note these two as the alternate subjects of the Structure above. LORD. Hebrew. Jehovah. App-4 .
Psalms 107:17 — Fools = the Perverse, depending on their own wisdom, which is foolishness with God (1 Corinthians 1:20-25 ). Compare Proverbs 1:7 ; Proverbs 12:15 ; Proverbs 14:3 , Proverbs 14:9 ; Proverbs 15:5 ; Proverbs 27:22 . transgression. Hebrew. pasha'. App-44 . iniquities. Hebrew. 'avah. App-44 . Not the same word as in Psalms 107:42 . are afflicted = bring affliction on themselves.
Psalms 125:3 — For = Surely. rod, or cudgel. the wicked = the wicked (or lawless) one. Hebrew. rasha, App-44 . Here the reference is to Sennacherib (Isaiah 30:31 ), but it looks forward to 2 Thessalonians 2:3 , 2 Thessalonians 2:4 . rest upon = continue over, lot = heritage (as allotted). righteous. Plural: i.e. Hezekiah and the godly in Israel. iniquity. Hebrew 'ava l. App-44 .
Psalms 29:10 — sitteth upon the flood. Corresponding with Psalms 29:3 = "sat enthroned at the flood", referring to Genesis. Hebrew. mabbul, from yabal, to flow. Occurs only here and Genesis 6:17 ; Genesis 7:6 , Genesis 7:7 , Genesis 7:10 , Genesis 7:17 ; Genesis 9:11 , Genesis 9:15 , Genesis 9:28 ; Genesis 10:1 , Genesis 10:32 ; Genesis 11:10 .
Psalms 59:5 — LORD God of hosts = Jehovah Elohim Sabaoth. See note on 1 Samuel 1:3 . heathen = nations. wicked. Hebrew. 'aven. App-44 . transgressors = hypocrites. Hebrew. bagad. Selah. Connecting the wicked transgressors with their true character as dogs of the Gentiles; and marking off and connecting the two prayers in verses: Psalms 59:1-5 , and verses: Psalms 59:11-13 . See App-66 .
Psalms 95:2 — presence. Hebrew = face. See note on Exodus 23:15 ; Exodus 34:20 . Hence the word "before" (Psalms 95:6 ; Psalms 96:6 , Psalms 96:9 , Psalms 96:13 ; Psalms 92:3 , Psalms 92:5 ; Psalms 98:6 , Psalms 98:9 ; Psalms 100:2 ; Psalms 102:2 , Psalms 102:10 , Psalms 102:28 , &c. This is the essence of all true worship.
Proverbs 15:33 — wisdom. Hebrew. chakmah. See note on Proverbs 1:2 . before honour, &c. Illustrations: Joseph (Genesis 41:16 , Genesis 41:39 , Genesis 41:40 . Genesis 22:4 ); Gideon (Judges 6:15 ); Hananiah (Nehemiah 7:2 ); Daniel (Daniel 2:30-48 ); Centurion (Matthew 8:8 , Matthew 8:10 ); Ephraim (Hosea 13:1 ); John Baptist (John 1:15 , John 1:30 ; John 3:30 ).
Proverbs 29:11 — fool. Hebrew. kesil. See note on Proverbs 1:7 . mind = spirit. Hebrew. ruach. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause), App-6 , for the feeling manifested by it. keepeth it. Illustrations: Abraham (Genesis 22:0 ); Joseph ( Pro 42:7 ; Pro 44:18-34 ); Moses (Exodus 3:10 . Compare Proverbs 4:18 ); Nathan (2 Samuel 12:1-6 , 2 Samuel 12:7-13 ).
Proverbs 5:10 — wealth. Hebrew strength: put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause), App-6 , for what is produced by it. labours. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause), for what is produced by it. a stranger = a foreigner. Hebrew. nakar. Not the same word as in verses: Proverbs 5:3 , Proverbs 5:17 . Ecclesiastes 4:4 — travail = toil, as connected with trouble, sorrow. Not the same word as in Ecclesiastes 1:13 ; Ecclesiastes 2:23 , Ecclesiastes 2:26 ; Ecclesiastes 3:10 ; Ecclesiastes 4:8 ; Ecclesiastes 5:14 . every right work = all the dexterity in work. man. Hebrew. 'ish. App-14 . vexation, &c. = feeding on wind. See note on Ecclesiastes 1:14 . spirit. Hebrew. ruach. App-9 .
Deuteronomy 10:16 — Circumcise. Here charged as a duty. in Deuteronomy 30:6 promised as a future blessing. Compare Leviticus 26:41 .Jeremiah 6:10 . Acts 7:51 . Circumcision mentioned after Exodus 12:48 only in Joshua 5:3-7 and Jeremiah 9:25 . Uncircumcision of Gentiles shows that circumcision was practiced. Compare Isaiah 52:1 .Jeremiah 9:25 , Jeremiah 9:26 . Ezekiel 31:18 .
Deuteronomy 5:2 — The LORD our God. Jehovah, our 'Elohim. made. Hebrew cut, because covenants were made by cutting the sacrifice in twain and passing between the parts. See Genesis 15:10 . Jeremiah 34:18 , Jeremiah 34:19 . Hebrews 9:16 , Hebrews 9:17 . Galatians 1:3 , Galatians 1:20 , the latter referring to the one of the two necessary parties to a covenant.
Deuteronomy 7:6 — holy. See note on Exodus 3:5 . chosen. This is the word emphasized by the Hebrew accent ( pas e h) , "thee hath Jehovah chosen". This is the basis of all else that is here stated. special = peculiar. See note on Exodus 19:6 , or "His people as a treasure". Compare Deuteronomy 26:18 . 1 Peter 2:9 . people. Hebrew Peoples. earth = ground.
2 Samuel 11:21 — Jerubbesheth (Judges 9:1 ) = Jerubbaal. Baal-lord, Bosheth = shame; changed by Holy Ghost here to suit his idolatry (Judges 8:27 ), and now David's sin. a woman, one of the ten deaths caused by a woman. See note, Judges 4:21 , piece = upper piece. millstone . One of the "despised" things used. See note on Judges 3:21 ; Judges 9:53 .
2 Samuel 7:8 — the LORD of hosts . Hebrew. Jehovah. Sebaioth. App-4 . One of the Jehovah titles. Compare 2 Samuel 5:10 ; 2 Samuel 6:2 , and see note on 1 Samuel 1:3 . I took . Compare 1 Samuel 16:11 , 1 Samuel 16:12 .Psalms 78:70 , Psalms 78:71 . over . Some codices, with one early printed edition, Syriac, and Vulgate, omit this second "over".
