1 Chronicles 16:35 — And say ye. A liturgical direction suited to this special occasion. Not needed for subsequent general use in Psalms 106:47 . See notes. Compare: 1 Chronicles 16:7 and 1 Chronicles 16:15 . gather us . . . deliver us. David knew from Deuteronomy 4:27 ; Deuteronomy 28:64 ; and Deuteronomy 32:0 , that the scattering of Israel had been foretold; and this prayer was based upon that revelation. So with Solomon. 1 Kings 8:46-50 . holy. See note on Exodus 3:5 .
1 Chronicles 28:2 — stood up upon his feet. Note David's three attitudes: lying on the earth as a penitent (2 Samuel 12:16 . Compare Psalms 51:0 ); sitting before Jehovah as a worshipper (2 Samuel 7:18 . 2 Samuel 17:16 ); and standing on his feet as a servant (28, 2). the ark. See note on 1 Chronicles 13:3 and Exodus 25:22 . and = even. the footstool of our God = the Ark. Figure of speech Anthropopatheia. App-6 . God. Hebrew. Elohim. App-4 .
1 Chronicles 9:22 — two hundred and twelve. These were for the Tabernacle (1 Chronicles 9:21 ). In Nehemiah 11:19 , it is 172, excluding those in the villages. Not the 4,000 of 1 Chronicles 23:5 , or their ninety-three heads (1 Chronicles 26:0 ), which were for the future Temple. their genealogy = [Was registered] in their villages. There is no record of this. But Samuel stood at the head. did ordain = founded Compare 1 Chronicles 23:1-6 . Compare Acts 3:24 .
2 Chronicles 21:12 — there came = was brought. Why assume that Elijah then sent it? It might have "come" as Holy Scripture comes to us to-day, though written in the past. It does not say a "letter" (which would be 'iggereth, or sepher , a book), but michetab, any writing, written at any time; probably a prophetic writing to be delivered at this particular time. Elijah. Long since raptured (2 Kings 2:0 ; Compare 2 Chronicles 3:11 ). This is the only mention of Elijah in Chronicles.
Nehemiah 13:1 — On that day: i.e. of which he is about to write. the book of Moses. See App-47 . was found written = they came to the place or passage (viz. Deuteronomy 23:3-6 ). Not a discovery, but in the course of the public reading (as in Luke 4:17 ). Compare Nehemiah 8:14 . Moabite (masc). This did not therefore exclude Ruth, a female, though married to Mahlon before Boaz. congregation = assembly, or muster. God. Hebrew. Elohim. (withArt.) = the [true] God. App-4 .
Nehemiah 3:26 — Moreover. Note the Parenthesis of Nehemiah 3:26 . Nethinims. Their work was to carry wood and water for the Temple. Hence their dwelling. See note on Ezra 2:43 . Ophel = the Ophel: the hill south of Moriah. Formerly Jebus, afterward Zion. See App-68 . the water gate. By Gihon. Now ' Ain Umm ed Deraj, "the Virgin's Fount". On east side of Ophel, in Kedron valley. See App-59 and App-68 . that lieth out. Probably the "tower in Siloam", Luke 13:4 .
Psalms 121:2 — My help. Figure of speech, Anadiplosis , repeated from end of Psalms 121:1 . the LORD = Jehovah ( App-4 .), not the hills. Which made heaven and earth. The reference is to the burden of Hezekiah's prayer (2 Kings 19:15 ; Isaiah 37:16 ). Idols were only the work of men's hands ( 2Ki 19:18 ; 2 Chronicles 32:19 ; Isaiah 37:19 ). Rab-shakeh had reproached "the living God". See further references to this in Psalms 124:8 ; Psalms 134:3 ; and App-67
Psalms 150:1 — The fifth of the last five Hallelujah Psalms, answering to the great thought of DEUTERONOMY. Compare Psalms 150:2 with Deuteronomy 3:24 , and Deuteronomy 32:43 . Praise ye THE LORD. Hebrew Hallelu-JAH. App-4 . GOD. Hebrew El. App-4 . sanctuary. The earthly sanctuary and the heavenly: the lower being formed on the pattern of the higher. See Hebrews 8:5 ; Hebrews 9:23 ; and compare 1 Chronicles 28:13 , 1 Chronicles 28:19 . firmament: Hebrew = expanse (Genesis 1:6 ).
Psalms 6:9 — receive. Figure of speech Synonymia. App-6 . Title. Shiggaion = a loud cry in danger or joy, from sha'ag, always rendered "roar". Occurs twenty-one times. Both meanings are seen in this Psalm, and Habakkuk 3:1 (plural "set to" = concerning), the only two occurrences. See App-65 . words = matters, or business. Cush. Who it was is not known: an evidence of genuineness. the = a. Benjamite. Hence probably an adherent or servant of Saul, and therefore
Psalms 87:1 — Title. A Psalm. Hebrew. mizmor. App-65 . Song. Hebrew. shir . App-65 . for the sons of Korah: i.e. of or by them. This title is repeated in the sub-scription after Psalms 87:7 , to emphasise the occasion of its use in bringing up the Ark to Zion by David (951BC, a Sabbatic year). See note there, and on Title of Psalms 24:0 . His: i.e. Jehovah's (which He has laid in Zion). holy. See note on Exodus 3:5 .
Proverbs 29:10 — The bloodthirsty = men of bloods. Hebrew. 'enosh. App-14 . hate the upright. Illustrations: Ahab (2 Chronicles 18:7 ); Jezebel (1 Kings 18:4 ; 1 Kings 19:2 ); Jews (Acts 23:12 ); Cain (Genesis 4:8 . Compare 1 John 3:12 ). the upright = upright ones. the just = an honest one. seek his soul: i.e. to preserve it. Illustrations: Jonathan (1 Samuel 19:2 ); Obadiah (1 Kings 18:4 ); believers (Acts 12:5 ); Priscilla and Aquila (Romans 16:4 ). soul = life. Hebrew. nephesh. App-13 .
Proverbs 4:14 — Enter not. Note the Figure of speech Synonymia ( App-6 ) in the verbs of verses: Proverbs 4:14 , Proverbs 4:15 . Illustrations: Lot (Genesis 13:10-13 ); Solomon (2 Kings 23:13 . Compare with 1 Kings 11:5 ); Jehoshaphat (2 Chronicles 18:1 ; 2 Chronicles 21:6 . Compare with 2 Chronicles 19:2 ; 2 Chronicles 22:2 , 2Ch 22:3 , 2 Chronicles 22:10 , and Proverbs 6:27 , Proverbs 6:28 ). wicked = lawless. Hebrew. rasha. App-44 . evil. Hebrew. ra'a'. App-44 .
Ecclesiastes 5:8 — poor = needy, in want. Hebrew. rush, as in Ecclesiastes 4:14 . province. See note on Ecclesiastes 2:8 , and App-76 . matter. Hebrew purpose or desire, put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause), App-6 , for the effect of it. Hebrew. hephez, one of the words supposed to be later Hebrew. See note on Ecclesiastes 3:1 , and App-76 . He That is higher, &c. = the high One above the high one regardeth, even the Most High is over them.
Isaiah 11:1 — And = But. Note the same order of events in Revelation 19:0 and Revelation 20:0 , as in Isaiah 10:0 and Isaiah 11:0 . a rod = a sprout: occurs again only in Proverbs 14:3 . Note the sublime contrast with Isaiah 10:33 , Isaiah 10:34 . stem = stump, Appropriate for Jesse, not David. Branch = Shoot or Scion. Hebrew. nezer . Nothing to do with "Nazareth". See note on Matthew 2:23 . Not the same word as in Isaiah 4:2 ; see note there.
Isaiah 2:5 — house of Jacob. Generally has regard to the natural seed of Jacob, while Israel has regard to the spiritual. See notes on Gen 33:28 ; Genesis 43:6 ; Genesis 45:26 , Genesis 45:28 . The expression occurs nine times in Isaiah, six before Isaiah 40:0 : (Isaiah 2:6 , Isaiah 2:6 ; Isaiah 8:17 ; Isaiah 10:20 ; Isaiah 14:1 ; Isaiah 29:22 ), and three after Isaiah 40:0 : (Isaiah 46:3 ; Isaiah 48:1 ; Isaiah 58:1 ). See App-79 .
Isaiah 27:1 — Nile); with Satan himself behind them all, as their great instigator. piercing = fleeing, or fugitive (like the Tigris). crooked tortuous (like the winding Euphrates). dragon = the crocodile of the Nile. sea = the Nile, as in Isaiah 19:5 .Nahum 3:8 .
Jeremiah 15:16 — found = discovered. In the eighteenth year of Josiah 513 B.C. Hebrew. maza'. Not used of revelation. Reference to 2 Kings 22:8 . 2Ch 34:14 , 2 Chronicles 34:15 . I am called by Thy name = Thy name was called upon me. Only those thus called feed upon Jehovah's words, and suffer reproach (Jeremiah 15:15 . Compare John 17:14 ). O LORD God of hosts. See note on Jeremiah 5:14 , and 1 Samuel 1:3 . God. Hebrew. Elohim. App-4 .
Jeremiah 3:1 — They say = [It is a common] saying. Reference to Pentateuch (Deuteronomy 24:1-4 ). yet return again to Me = yet [thinkest thou to] return, &c. It was contrary to the law of Deuteronomy 24:1-4 . It will be the new Israel of Matthew 21:43 of a yet future day. God never mends what man has marred. This is the lesson of the potter's house. See Jeremiah 18:1-4 . to Me. See Jeremiah 3:7 ; Jeremiah 4:1 .
Jeremiah 3:18 — In those days. Still referring to the future Restoration. the house of Judah. This expression occurs eleven times in this book: here; Jeremiah 5:11 ; Jeremiah 11:10 , Jeremiah 11:17 ; Jeremiah 12:14 ; Jeremiah 13:11 ; Jeremiah 22:6 ; Jeremiah 31:27 , Jeremiah 31:31 ; Jeremiah 33:14 ; Jeremiah 36:3 . walk with = go unto. the house of Israel. See note on Jeremiah 2:4 . and they shall = that they may. come = enter. together: or, at the same time.
Jeremiah 3:6 — Jeremiah 3:6-25 ; Jeremiah 4:1-4 is Jeremiah's Fifth prophecy. (see Book comments for Jeremiah). in the days of Josiah. This must be noted to understand the context. Israel. Here refers to the Northern Kingdom. In Jeremiah it usually refers to the whole nation. mountain . . . tree. Compare Jeremiah 2:20 , and Hosea 4:13 . played the harlot. The whole of this refers to idolatry, chiefly because of the uncleanness connected with the phallic worship of the Canaanitish nations.
