Exodus 28:1-43
The Priestly Garments
1. All Israel is a ’kingdom of priests’ (see on Exodus 19:6), but for the special service of the sanetuary Aaron and his descendants are selected and solemnly consecrated: see Leviticus 8, 9. Nadab and Abihu died (Leviticus 10) and the priesthood
Ezra 1:1 Ahora, etc.]
Psalms 71:1-24
This Ps. of prayer (Psalms 71:1-13) and praise (Psalms 71:14-24) was apparently written by an old man (Psalms 71:9, Psalms 71:18) and in the time of the exile. Some parts of it are undoubtedly national, but much of it expresses personal experience and desire and faith. It is largely
Isaiah 13:1-22
1. Burden] The corresponding verb means ’to lift up’ (a) a load, (b) the voice (cp. Isaiah 3:7; Isaiah 42:2, Isaiah 42:11), used of Balaam lifting up his voice in oracular utterance (Numbers 24:3, Numbers 24:15, Numbers 24:23). Hence the noun
Isaiah 22:1-14
Jerusalem Rebuked
A severe rebuke of the conduct of the people of Jerusalem in a time of calamity. The crisis refered to cannot be certainly identified. The difficulty in assigning the passage to Sennacherib’s invasion (701 b.c.) is that other prophecies relating to it are marked by encouragement, not, as here, by a tone of rebuke. Perhaps the present prophecy should be dated 711, the time of Sargon’s invasion.
1-7. The unworthy behaviour of the people of Jerusalem
Isaiah 38:1-22
Sickness and Recovery of Hezekiah
Continuation of the historical appendix to Isaiah’s prophecies. The chapter is parallel to 2 Kings 20:1-11 (where see notes), but contains a considerable addition in the shape of Hezekiah’s song of thanks-giving upon his recovery. Chronologically this chapter precedes 36 and 37: see on Isaiah 36:1.

Isaiah 64:1-12

The Fourth Vision
Joshua, better known under the later form Jeshua (Ezra 2:2; Ezra 3:2; Nehemiah 12:7-8, Nehemiah 12:10, etc.), was the son of Jehozadak, a member of the priestly order. He returned with the Jews from exile, and was prominently associated with Zerubbabel in the erection of the Second Temple. In 1 Esdras and Ecclus. the name appears
John 2:1-25
The Wedding at Cana. The Temple Cleansed
1-11. The marriage at Cana. This miracle is not recorded by the synoptists because it occurred before the beginning of the ministry proper. St. John records it, because, spiritually interpreted, it forms a suitable introduction to our Lord’s ministerial
Acts 11:19-3
The Church in Antioch, 35-47 a.d. (Acts 11:19 to Acts 13:3)

1 Corinthians 12:1-40 Corinthians were inclined to overvalue the more showy gifts, especially that of tongues. Those possessing this gift were tempted to use it for mere display; those not possessing it envied these others, and undervalued their own gifts.
St. Paul first (1 Corinthians 12) shows that all these gifts come from the same Spirit, and all alike contribute to the well-being of the Church. But love (1 Corinthians 13) surpasses them all; without it they are of no avail. Of these gifts, prophecy (i.e. inspired
Hebrews 5:1-14 to Aaron briefly stated so as to show that He was at least as true a priest. Christ fulfilled the two requisite conditions that were seen in the case of Aaron, viz. human brotherhood, essential to the representative character of priesthood (Hebrews 5:1-3), and divine appointment, essential to its authority, as evidenced by Psalms 110 (Hebrews 5:4-6). In His humanity, too, Jesus suffered grievously, but by teaching Him obedience that awful suffering perfected Him as a priest, so that He became the
