Psalms 21:1-13
The title and authorship have been discussed under Psalms 20, to which this forms a sequel. Its contents include a thanksgiving to God for His blessings to the king (Psalms 21:1-7), an address to the king promising future victories over his enemies (Psalms 21:8-12), and a closing ascription of praise to God (Psalms 21:13). The Ps. is used on Ascension Day.

1-12. The vv. refer chiefly to fools.
1. The Palestinian seasons were more regular than ours (1 Samuel 12:17).
2. This is a contradiction of the idea that the deity invoked in a curse was bound to inflict it (Genesis 27:33; Judges 17:2). The undeserved curse is compared to the aimless movements of a bird.
4, 5. Answer or not, according to circumstances (Matthew
Song of Solomon 6:10-4 ’Dance of Mahanaim’ (RV), a sword-dance, no doubt, such as the bride executes, sword in hand, on the evening of the marriage, amidst a half-circle of men and women, whilst a poem (wasf= ’description’) of the character of Song of Solomon 7:1-6 is being sung. The title Shulamite is derived from the town-name Shulem (otherwise spelled ’Shunem’), from which Abishag, the fairest maiden of her day, came (1 Kings 1:4): obviously it is another way of calling her ’fairest among
Isaiah 50:1-11 49:20-21) are addressed. Their servitude is not irrevocable; Jehovah has not formally repudiated Zion (Deuteronomy 24:1); nor, though they had to learn by discipline, can any creditors claim His people as slaves (2 Kings 4:1): cp. Jeremiah 24:4-6; Ezekiel 37.
2, 3. The imagery is from the exodus from Egypt.
2. Wherefore.. answer] These clauses emphasise the hopelessness of Israel’s case from a human point of view. Only the divine power could effect the deliverance of the exiles.

Jeremiah 16:1-21
1-13. Selfdenial and an ascetic, life are to be the prophet’s lot.
6. Nor cut themselves] in token of mourning: cp. Jeremiah 47:5.
7. Tear themselves for them] RV ’break bread for them.’ The reference here and in the rest of the v. is to the custom that the friends should urge the mourners to eat and drink: cp. 2 Samuel 3:35; 2 Samuel 12:16; Proverbs 31:6.

Colossians overview town that the present Epistle is addressed; and some discussion has arisen as to St. Paul’s previous relations with them. He seems to have written an earlier letter to them (Colossians 4:10) to which Epaphras had brought a reply (Colossians 1:7); but whether he had himself actually visited Colossæ at any time is a matter of doubt. This chapter is entirely in the spirit of the narratives in Judges; from 1 Samuel 11:15, it seems to be independent of 1 Samuel 10 but 1 Samuel 11:12 points back to 1 Samuel 10:27, which is perhaps distinct from 1 Samuel 10:17-24 even the ceremony at Grilgal may have been a’ renewal’ (1 Samuel 11:10), in the renewed popular enthusiasm, of the ceremony at Mizpeh. But see on 1 Samuel 12:12.
