Matthew 3:9-10 — Matthew 3:9-10 . Protest and warning . τ . Ἀβραάμ : the meaning is plain = do not imagine that having Abraham for father will do instead of repentance that all children of Abraham are safe whatever betide. But the expression is peculiar: do not
Mark 1:3 — Mark 1:3 . Quotation from Isaiah 40:3 as in Matthew 3:3 .
Mark 1:3 — Cita de Isaías 40:3 como en Mateo 3:3 .
Mark 3:24-25 — Mark 3:24-25 set forth the principle or rationale embodied in two illustrations. The theory in question is futile because it involves suicidal action, which is not gratuitously to be imputed to any rational agents, to a kingdom (Mark 3:24 ), to a house (Mark 3:25 ), and therefore not to Satan (Mark 3:26 ).
Acts 22:14 — Acts 22:14 . ἡμῶν : again a conciliatory phrase, cf. Acts 7:32 , so St. Peter in Acts 3:13 , Acts 5:30 . προεχειρ .: “hath appointed,” only in Acts in N.T., Acts 3:20 , and in Acts 26:16 , again used by Paul in narrating his conversion and call. In LXX, cf. Exodus 4:13 , Joshua 3:12 , 2MMalachi 3:7
Romans 3:10 — Romans 3:10 . There is something to be said for the idea that this is Paul’s thesis, rather than a quotation of Psalms 14:3 .Psalms 14:3; Psalms 14:3 is correctly quoted in Romans 3:12 , and the Apostle would hardly quote it
1 Corinthians 3:9 — 1 Corinthians 3:9 . συνεργοὶ sums up in two words, and grounds upon a broad principle ( γάρ ), what 1 Corinthians 3:6 ff. have set out in detail: “we are God’s fellow-workmen” employed upon His field, His building; and “we are God’s
2 Corinthians 3:12 — 2 Corinthians 3:12 . τ . λ .: having therefore such a hope ( sc. , of the glorious Ministration of the Spirit, 2 Corinthians 3:8 ; cf. 2 Corinthians 3:4 ) we use great boldness of speech . The verses which follow are parenthetical down to 2 Corinthians 3:18 , where the subject is again we, i.e. , all Christian believers, as contrasted with Jews.
1 Thessalonians 3:5 — 1 Thessalonians 3:5 . Resuming the thought of 1 Thessalonians 3:1-3 a , after the parenthetical digression of 3 b , 4, but adding a fresh reason for the mission of Timothy, viz. , the apostle’s desire to have his personal anxiety about the Thessalonians relieved.
2 Thessalonians 2:17 — 2 Thessalonians 2:17 , in contrast to the disquiet and confusion of 2 Thessalonians 2:2 . ἔργῳ as in 2 Thessalonians 1:11 , 2Th 3:4 ; 2 Thessalonians 3:7 f., λόγῳ as 2 Thessalonians 3:1 ; 2 Thessalonians 3:15 ; 1 Thessalonians 1:8 . See the fulsome pagan inscription of Halicarnassus, which after giving thanks for the birth of Augustus, σωτῆρα τοῦ κοινοῦ τῶν ἀνθρώπων γένους , declares
, λόγῳ como 2 Tesalonicenses 3:1 ; 2 Tesalonicenses 3:15 ; 1 Tesalonicenses 1:8 .
Titus 1:7 — Titus 1:7 . τὸν ἐυίσκοπον : On the use of the singular as a generic term See on 1 Timothy 3:2 . Here, where the thought is of the various official functions of the minister, the official title is appropriate. ἀνέγκλητον : See notes on 1Ti 3:2 ; 1 Timothy 3:10 . θεοῦ οἰκονόμον : a steward appointed by God (Luke 12:42 ; 1 Corinthians 9:17
ἀνέγκλητον : Ver notas sobre 1Ti 3:2; 1 Timoteo 3:10 . θεοῦ οἰκονόμον: mayordomo designado por Dios ( Lucas 12:42 ; 1 Corintios 9:17 ), en
Titus 3:2 — Titus 3:2 . ἐπιεικεῖς : coupled as qualifications of the episcopus, 1 Timothy 3:3 . πᾶσαν πραΰτητα : the greatest possible meekness . Compare Eph 4:2 ; 1 Peter 3:15 .
Titus 3:3 — Titus 3:3 . ἦμεν γάρ ποτε καὶ ἡμεῖς : The connexion is: you need not suppose that it is hopeless to imagine that these wild Cretan folk can be reclaimed. We ourselves are a living proof of the power of God’s grace. Ephesians 2:3 sqq . is an exact parallel.
2 Peter 2:9 — is the atmosphere in which faith is brought to full development. It was a condition even of the life of Jesus. It is the word used by St. Luke of the Temptation (Luke 4:13 ). On the one hand, πειρασμός is not to be lightly sought (Luke 11:4 ), or entered into carelessly (Mark 14:38 ); the situation of πειρασμός may itself be the result of sin (1 Timothy 6:9 ). On the other hand, it is a joyous opportunity for the development
3 John 1:11 — 3 John 1:11 . A warning against evil example. The pres. participles ἀγαθοποιῶν , κακοποιῶν denote continuance in and practice of good or bad. See note on 1 John 3:6 . ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ , “a child of God” ( cf. 1 John 3:10 ). Observe the gentleness of the Apostle: the natural antithesis of ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ would be ἐκ τοῦ διαβόλου (1 John 3:8 ), but he says οὐχ ἑώρακεν τὸν Θεόν .
