(Usher) (Calmet)
1 Chronicles 2:6 — Zamri, o Zabdi, Josue vii. 1. &mdash- Etham. Nombres similares aparecen [en] 3 Reyes iv. 30. Pero parecen haber sido personas diferentes.
Nehemiah 1:11 — Hombre; ( virum) el gran rey, (Haydock) Artajerjes. (Calmet) &mdash- Copero; Athersatha, 1 Esdras ii. 63. y 2 Esdras vii. sesenta y cinco.
(Worthington)
Jeremiah 3:1 — Eso. Hebreo, "un dicho". Septuaginta, "Si", etc., Deuteronomio xxiv. 1. (Haydock) &mdash Amantes. Septuaginta, "pastores" (Calmet) buscando ayuda de ídolos y extranjeros.
Ezekiel 35:6 — Sangre.
Numbers 34:5 — belonged to Egypt; and though some assert that the Hebrews never dwelt to the west of it, the territory was so barren, that nothing may be said respecting that affair. We find, however, that under Solomon they inhabited as far as the river of Egypt; (1 Paralipomenon xiii. 5., and 3 Kings viii. 65,) and if they had not, God’s promise entitled them to that part of the country; as well as to that which extends to the great river Euphrates, though they perhaps never took possession of it. See Genesis
Deuteronomy 33:6 — (Theodoret q. 42,) and many interpreters, take this in quite a contrary sense, "let him be numerous, or not few;" the negation being supplied from the former part of the verse, which is not unusual in Hebrew. See Genesis ii. 6., Psalm ix. 19., and Proverbs xxxi. 1, &c. The tribe of Ruben was in effect more numerous than those of Gad, Joseph, or Benjamin. Simeon receives no blessing, probably on account of the crimes for which so many of that tribe were exterminated, (Numbers i. 23.,
Acts 6:34 — Ver 1. Of the Grecians against the Hebrews.[1] By the Grecians are many times understood the heathens or pagans, as Acts xiv. 1, xviii. 4., &c., but here by Grecians (which some translate Hellenists or Grecists) we may understand those new converted Christians,
Philippians 4:3 — I entreat thee, my sincere [1] companion. St. John Chrysostom expounds it of his fellow labourer or fellow soldier, and says that some pretended that by it was meant St. Paul’s wife; but this he absolutely rejects, as do all the ancient interpreters, who teach us that St.
Hebrews 13:4 — education of their children. It does not follow from hence, that all persons without any exception, even those who have already made a vow to God to lead a single life, may lawfully marry. Such persons, by pretending to marry, incur their damnation. See 1 Timothy v. 12. (Witham) --- Or, let marriage be honourable in all. That is, in all things belonging to the marriage state. This is a warning to married people, not to abuse the sanctity of their state, by any liberties or irregularities contrary thereunto.
Judges 11:3 — Tob, to the north of Galaad, of which it is a part. (Josephus) --- It is called Tubim, 1 Machabees v. 13. See 2 Kings x. 6. --- And robbers. This is a farther explication of rekim, poor vain fellows, chap ix. 4. They did not infest the Israelites, but made war on their enemies around; latro, in Latin, often signifies a soldier, particularly
Wisdom of Solomon 46:19 — Without. Greek, "fed with milk," 1 Kings vii. 6. The Philistines were discomfited, and continued peaceable during the rest of Samuel’s government.
(Calmet)
