Esther 2:23 — King. Such histories were preserved with great care, 1 Esdras vi. 1. (Calmet) --- Septuagint, "the king ordered a memorial to it to be kept in the royal library, for the praise of Mardochai’s good will." (Haydock) --- The latter also wrote an account, chap. xii. 4.
Psalms 133:2 — Lift up. This posture was very natural, and expressive, 1 Timothy ii. 8. (Haydock) --- Agatharcides testifies, that the Jews did no servile work on the sabbath, but "stretched for their hands to pray in the temple, till the evening." (Josephus, contra App. 1.)
Jeremiah 41:5 — Rent, as people mourning. Literally, "dirty." Hebrew and Septuagint, "cut." Judith 8:25 — CHAPTER VIII. Destroyer. As this word is not used elsewhere, (Worthington) St. Paul seems to allude to this passage, (1 Corinthians x. 10.) as Judith does to various punishments (Numbers xi. 1., and xiv. 12., and xx. 4.; Calmet) inflicted by an angel. (Menochius)
