Daniel 7:11 — Spoke. I wished to see how the king would be punished. He felt the hand of God as he was going to destroy all the Jews, when he pretended to repent. (1 Machabees vi. and 2 Machabees ix. 4.) His successors could not much disturb the Jews. (ver. 13.) (Calmet)

Daniel 7:4 — Man. The emperors of Babylon were forced to confess that they were nothing more. (Calmet) --- Their cruel and rapid conquests (Worthington) are denoted by this monstrous animal. Its wings shew how the lands were divided between the Medes and Persians. Perhaps Neriglissor, &c. shared a part. (Chap. v. 1.) (Calmet)

Daniel 8:25 — Prince: God. --- Hand of man. He confessed that he was justly punished. (1 Machabees vi. 10.) Greek: "He shall raise himself by the ruin of many, (Theod. and some manuscripts add, and shall rise up against the prince of princes) and he shall break them like eggs with his hand."

Deuteronomy 16:20 — Solo. En hebreo, "seguirás la justicia". Serás guiado únicamente por los dictados de la justicia, al dictar sentencia, Éxodo xxiii. 1, 9. This motive is frequently urged, Exodus xxxii. 13., Leviticus xxvi. 41., Deuteronomy ix. 27., Daniel iii. 35., and Jeremias xv. 1. (Calmet) --- People in sin and misery seem dead, (ver. 11.) yet may revive by grace. (Worthington)

Baruch 3:46 — Maspha. Silo had been, and Jerusalem was afterwards, the place for public prayer. (Worthington) --- As the Jews could not go to Jerusalem, they performed their duty as well as they could at Maspha, where Israel had often met, Judges xx., and xxi., and 1 Kings vii. 5., and x. 17.

Letter of Jeremiah 6:10 — Women. See 1 Machabees i. 64., &c. (Calmet) --- Besides the former massacres, (chap. v.) four great martyrdoms are here recorded: first, of two women, with the children; second, of others keeping the sabbath; third, of Eleazar, ninety years old; and fourthly, of the seven brethren, with their mother, chap. vii.
