Genesis 18:32 — Diez. La principal preocupación de Abraham fue por Lot; aunque, por modestia, no lo menciona; sin embargo, confiando en la bondad divina que sería preservado, a menos que hubiera perdido su justicia, no avanza más. Zephaniah 1:7 — Silent. Hebrew has, (Haydock) an interjection, (St. Jerome) like our hush. (Haydock) --- This denotes the importance of what he is going to say. --- Guests. The blood of the wicked is his victim, Jeremias xlvi. 10., and Ezechiel xxxix. 17. (Calmet) --- The day of punishment is commonly styled the day of the Lord, Isaias ii., and 1 Corinthians iii. (Worthington)
Matthew 4:15 — St. Matthew has omitted in this place part of the prophecy, (Isaias ix.) because it was not to his purpose. He has likewise given us the mystical, though still true, interpretation of the prophecy, which was written in the first instance to foretell the deliverance of Jerusalem from Senacherib, in the time of Ezechias. (1 Kings, xix.) (Jansenius)

Joshua 1:15 — Más allá de. La misma expresión se traduce de este lado, ver. 14. En hebreo beheber también significa "en el pasaje". Hebrews 2:1 — Lest perhaps we should let them slip away,[1] or run out, like water out of leaking vessels, which is lost, and cannot be take up again. According to the letter it is, lest we run out; the sense must be, lest we do not sufficiently attend to these truths. 1 Peter 2:2 — Desire the rational [1] milk without guile, or deceit. Without guile, in construction, does not agree with new-born children, but with milk, as appears by the text. The sense is, follow the pure doctrine of the gospel, without mixture of errors. Tobit 2:18 — Saints; Abraham, &c. Thus Mathathias encouraged his children; (1 Machabees ii. 50.) and no argument can be more forcible.    Dice puer virtutem ex me, verumque laborem     Sis memor, et te animo repetentem exempla tuorum     Et pater Æneas et avunculus excitet Hector. -----Virgil, Æneid xii. --- Life eternal. These grand truths were more developed, as the Messias was nearer at hand.
Wisdom of Solomon 23:15 — Opposite. Or equal. Greek, "clothed with death." He denotes blasphemy, (Leviticus xxiv. 14.) or the invitation to idolatry, (Deuteronomy xiii. 1.) or calumny, ver. 17., and Leviticus xix. 12. (Calmet) --- In oaths God is called to witness, as being unable to deceive. But blasphemy attributes to him or to others what does not belong to them. (Worthington)
Wisdom of Solomon 51:14 — The Father. Grotius asserts boldly, that it should be, "my Father," and that some Christian has changed this. But his authority may be rejected, when he brings no proof; and Bossuet has solidly refuted him. The passage clearly proves the belief of the second person, and seems to allude to Psalm cix. 1. (Drusius; Vatable, &c.) (Calmet)
Letter of Jeremiah 8:16 — Seven thousand. In the Greek it is six thousand. But then three thousand of them had no arms, 1 Machabees iv. 6. (Challoner) --- If the army was divided into four companies of 1,500, there would be only 6,000. But if Judas had with him 3,000, it would consist of 7,500. (Calmet) --- Reconciled. Greek, "consternated at," &c. (Haydock)
