Ecclesiastes 5:6 ("body," Ecclesiastes 2:3,
Margin) may tempt thee to break (Ecclesiastes 2:3- :).
angel—the "messenger"
of God (Job 33:23); minister
(Revelation 1:20); that is, the priest
(Malachi 2:7) "before"
whom a breach of a vow was to be confessed (Leviticus 5:4;
Leviticus 5:5). We, Christians, in our
vows (for example, at baptism, the Lord's Supper, c.) vow in the
presence of Jesus Christ, "the angel of the covenant" (Leviticus 5:5- :), and of ministering angels as witnesses (1 Corinthians 11:10

Song of Solomon 5:2 has
gone from the feast alone; night is come; He knocks at the door of
His espoused; she hears, but in sloth does not shake off
half-conscious drowsiness; namely, the disciples' torpor ( :-), "the spirit willing, the flesh weak"
(compare Romans 7:18-25;
Galatians 5:16; Galatians 5:17;
Galatians 5:24). Not total
sleep. The lamp was burning beside the slumbering wise virgin,
but wanted trimming (Galatians 5:24- :). It is His voice that rouses her (Jonah 1:6;
Ephesians 5:14; Revelation 3:20).
Instead
Isaiah 3:9 the Arabic,
translates "their hardness" ( :-, Margin), or impudence of countenance ( :-). They have lost not only the substance of virtue, but its
color.
witness—literally,
"corresponds" to them; their look answers to their inner
character (Hosea 5:5).
declare— (Hosea 5:5- :). "Foaming out their own shame"; so far from
making it a secret, "glorying" in it (Hosea 5:5- :).
unto themselves—Compare
"in themselves" (Proverbs 1:31;
Proverbs 8:36; Jeremiah 2:19;
Romans 1:27).
Isaiah 5 overview CHAPTER 5
:-. PARABLE OF
JEHOVAH'S VINEYARD.
A new prophecy; entire in itself.
Probably delivered about the same time as the second and third
chapters, in Uzziah's reign. Compare Isaiah 5:15;
Isaiah 5:16; Isaiah 2:17;
and Isaiah 5:1; Isaiah 3:14.
However,
Isaiah 64:1 1. rend . . . heavens—bursting
forth to execute vengeance, suddenly descending on Thy people's foe
(Psalms 18:9; Psalms 144:5;
Habakkuk 3:5; Habakkuk 3:6).
flow down— (Judges 5:5;
Micah 1:4).
Amos 5:16 16. Therefore—resumed from :-. God foresees they will not obey the exhortation (Amos 5:14;
Amos 5:15), but will persevere in
the unrighteousness stigmatized (Amos 5:7;
Amos 5:10; Amos 5:12).
the Lord—JEHOVAH.
the God of hosts, the Lord—an
accumulation of titles, of which His lordship over all things is the
climax, to mark that from
Micah 1:4 4. Imagery from earthquakes and
volcanic agency, to describe the terrors which attend Jehovah's
coming in judgment (compare Judges 5:5).
Neither men of high degree, as the mountains, nor men of low degree,
as the valleys, can secure themselves or their land from the
judgments of God.
as wax— (Judges 5:5- :; compare Judges 5:5- :). The third clause, "as wax," c., answers to the
first
Micah 3:1 1. princes—magistrates or
judges.
Is it not for you?—Is
it not your special function (Jeremiah 5:4;
Jeremiah 5:5)?
judgment—justice. Ye
sit in judgment on others; surely then ye ought to know the judgment
for injustice which awaits yourselves (Jeremiah 5:5- :).
Matthew 9 overview CHAPTER 9
:-. HEALING OF A
PARALYTIC. ( = Mark 2:1-12;
Luke 5:17-26).
This incident appears to follow
next in order of time to the cure of the leper (Luke 5:17-42.5.26- :). For the exposition, see on Luke 5:17-42.5.26- :.
Luke 5:17-42.5.26- :. MATTHEW'S CALL
AND FEAST. ( =
Mark 2:14-17; Luke 5:27-32).
The Call of Matthew (Luke 5:27-42.5.32- :).
1 Corinthians 14:34 34. (1 Timothy 2:11;
1 Timothy 2:12). For women to speak in
public would be an act of independence, as if they were not subject
to their husbands (compare 1 Corinthians 11:3;
Ephesians 5:22; Titus 2:5;
1 Peter 3:1). For "under
obedience," translate, "in subjection" or
"submission," as the Greek is translated
(Ephesians 5:21; Ephesians 5:22;
Ephesians 5:24).
the law—a term applied
to the whole Old Testament; here, Ephesians 5:24- :.
Galatians 5:6 levelled against those who, being not legalists, or Judaizers,
think themselves Christians on this ground alone.
faith which worketh by
love—Greek, "working by love." This
corresponds to "a new creature" ( :-), as its definition. Thus in Galatians 5:5;
Galatians 5:6, we have the three,
"faith," "hope," and "love." The Greek
expresses, "Which effectually worketh"; which exhibits its
energy by love (so Galatians 5:6- :). Love is not joined with faith in justifying,
but is the principle of the works
Ephesians 4:18 18. More literally, "Being
darkened in their understanding," that is, their intelligence,
or perceptions (compare Ephesians 5:8;
Acts 26:18; 1 Thessalonians 5:4;
1 Thessalonians 5:5).
alienated—This and
"darkened," imply that before the fall they (in the person
of their first father) had been partakers of life and light:
and that they had revolted from the primitive revelation
Ephesians 5:14 14. Wherefore—referring to the
whole foregoing argument (Ephesians 5:8;
Ephesians 5:11; Ephesians 5:13).
Seeing that light (spiritual) dispels the pre-existing darkness, He
(God) saith . . . (compare the same phrase, Ephesians 5:13- :).
Awake—The reading of
all the oldest manuscripts is "Up!" or, "Rouse thee!"
a phrase
Philippians 2:15 15. blameless and harmless—without
either the repute of mischief, or the inclination to do it [ALFORD].
sons—rather as Greek,
"the children of God" ( :-). Imitation of our heavenly Father is the instinctive
guide to our duty as His children, more than
Philippians 2:9 9. Wherefore—as the just
consequence of His self-humiliation and obedience (Psalms 8:5;
Psalms 8:6; Psalms 110:1;
Psalms 110:7; Matthew 28:18;
Luke 24:26; John 5:27;
John 10:17; Romans 14:9;
Ephesians 1:20-22; Hebrews 2:9).
An intimation, that if we would hereafter be exalted, we too must,
after His example, now humble ourselves (Philippians
1 Thessalonians 5:3 3. they—the men of the world.
1 Thessalonians 5:5; 1 Thessalonians 5:6;
1 Thessalonians 4:13, "others," all
the rest of the world save Christians.
Peace— (Judges 18:7;
Judges 18:9; Judges 18:27;
Judges 18:28; Jeremiah 6:14;
Ezekiel 13:10).
then—at the very
moment when they least expect it. Compare
1 Timothy 5:22 22. Lay hands—that is, ordain
(1 Timothy 4:14; 2 Timothy 1:6;
Titus 1:5). The connection is with
1 Timothy 5:19. The way to guard
against scandals occurring in the case of presbyters is, be cautious
as to the character of the candidate before ordaining him; this will
apply to other Church officers so ordained, as well as
Titus 1:16 16. They profess—that is, make
a profession acknowledging God. He does not deny their
theoretical knowledge of God, but that they practically know
Him.
deny him—the opposite
of the previous "profess" or "confess" Him
(1 Timothy 5:8; 2 Timothy 2:12;
2 Timothy 3:5).
abominable—themselves,
though laying so much stress on the contracting of abomination from
outward things (compare Leviticus 11:10-13;
Romans 2:22).
disobedient—to God
(Titus 3:3; Ephesians 2:2;
Ephesians 5:6).
Hebrews 11:7 7. warned of God—The same
Greek, Hebrews 8:5,
"admonished of God."
moved with fear—not
mere slavish fear, but as in Hebrews 8:5- :; see on Hebrews 5:7; Greek,
"reverential fear": opposed to the world's sneering
disbelief of the revelation, and self-deceiving security. Join "by
faith" with "prepared
Hebrews 5:6 6. He is here called simply
"Priest"; in Hebrews 5:5,
"High Priest." He is a Priest absolutely, because He
stands alone in that character without an equal. He is "High
Priest" in respect of the Aaronic type, and also in respect to
us, whom He has made priests by throwing open to us access to
God [BENGEL].
