Exodus 32:4 4. fashioned it with a graving tool,
after he had made it a molten calf—The words are transposed,
and the rendering should be, "he framed with a graving tool the
image to be made, and having poured the liquid gold into the mould,
he made it a molten calf."
2 Kings 2:1 and Gerizim; a school of the prophets was
established there. At Beth-el there was also a school of the
prophets, which Elijah had founded, notwithstanding that place was
the headquarters of the calf-worship; and at Jericho there was
another [2 Kings 2:4]. In travelling
to these places, which he had done through the impulse of the Spirit
(2 Kings 2:2; 2 Kings 2:4-6),
Elijah wished to pay a farewell visit to these several institutions,
which lay on his way to the place of ascension and, at the same time,
from
2 Kings 2:4 and Gerizim; a school of the prophets was
established there. At Beth-el there was also a school of the
prophets, which Elijah had founded, notwithstanding that place was
the headquarters of the calf-worship; and at Jericho there was
another [2 Kings 2:4]. In travelling

Song of Solomon 3:1 1. By night—literally, "By
nights." Continuation of the longing for the dawn of the Messiah
(Song of Solomon 2:17; Psalms 130:6;
Malachi 4:2). The spiritual desertion
here (Song of Solomon 2:17; Song of Solomon 3:5)
is not due to indifference, as in Song of Solomon 3:5- :. "As nights and dews are better for flowers than a
continual sun, so Christ's absence (at times) giveth sap to humility,
and
Song of Solomon 4:16 16. Awake—literally, "arise."
All besides is ready; one thing alone is wanted—the breath of God.
This follows rightly after His death (Song of Solomon 6:12;
Acts 2:1-4). It is His call
to the Spirit to come (John 14:16);
in John 3:8, compared to "the
wind"; quickening (John 6:63;
Ezekiel 27:9). Saints offer the same
prayer (Psalms 85:6; Habakkuk 3:2).
The north wind "awakes," or arises strongly,
namely, the Holy Ghost
Isaiah 58:13 13. (Isaiah 56:2;
Nehemiah 13:15-22). The Sabbath,
even under the new dispensation, was to be obligatory (Nehemiah 13:15-16.13.22- :).
foot—the instrument of
motion (compare Proverbs 4:27); men
are not to travel for mere pleasure on the Sabbath (Proverbs 4:27- :). The Jews were forbidden to travel on it farther than the
tabernacle or temple. If thou keep thy foot from going on thy own
ways and "doing thy pleasure," c. (Exodus 20:10

Ezekiel 16:61 61. thou shalt remember—It is
God who first remembers her before she remembers Him and her own ways
before Him (Ezekiel 16:60; Ezekiel 20:43;
Ezekiel 36:31).
ashamed—the fruit of
repentance (2 Corinthians 7:10; 2 Corinthians 7:11).
None please God unless those who displease themselves; a foretaste of
the Gospel (Luke 18:9-14).

derisive song. Habakkuk follows Isaiah ( :-) and Micah (Micah 2:4) in
the phraseology.
against him—when
dislodged from his former eminence.
Woe—The "derisive
song" here begins, and continues to the end of the chapter. It
is a symmetrical whole, and consists of five stanzas, the first three
consisting of three
Zechariah 1:18 of
conscious strength: hence the ruling powers of the world
(Revelation 17:3; Revelation 17:12).
The number four in Zechariah's time referred to the four
cardinal points of the horizon. Wherever God's people turned, there
were foes to encounter (Nehemiah 4:7);
the Assyrian, Chaldean, and Samaritan on the north; Egypt and Arabia
on the south; Philistia on the west; Ammon and Moab on the east. But
the Spirit in the prophet looked farther; namely, to the four
world powers, the only ones which were, or are,

unselfishness CHRIST is
the perfect model of all Christians (Romans 15:2- :). (3) Holy Scripture is the divine storehouse of all
furniture for the Christian life, even in its most trying and
delicate features (Romans 15:4).
(4) The harmonious glorification of the God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ by the whole body of the redeemed, as it is the most
exalted fruit of the scheme of redemption, so it is the last end of
God in it (Romans 15:5-7).

towards men center in Adam and Christ, where does "the law"
come in, and what was the use of it? Answer: It
entered—But the word
expresses an important idea besides "entering." It
signifies, "entered incidentally," or "parenthetically."
(In Galatians 2:4 the same word is
rendered, "came in privily.") The meaning is, that
the promulgation of the law at Sinai was no primary or essential
feature of the divine plan, but it was "added" (Galatians 2:4- :) for a subordinate purpose—the more fully to reveal

the adoption—It is true
that, compared with the new economy, the old was a state of minority
and pupilage, and so far that of a bond-servant

The Corinthians did not fall into open idolatry, but ate things
offered to idols, so making a compromise with the heathen; just as
they connived at fornication. Thus this verse prepares for the
precepts in 1 Corinthians 8:4, c. Compare
the similar case of fornication, combined with a similar idolatrous
compromise, after the pattern of Israel with the Midianites (1 Corinthians 8:4- :).
no not to eat—not to
sit at the same table with such whether at the love-feasts (agapæ)

Galatians 1:12 the three years, in part of which he sojourned in Arabia
(Galatians 1:17; Galatians 1:18),
in the vicinity of the scene of the giving of the law; a fit place
for such a revelation of the Gospel of grace, which supersedes the
ceremonial law (Galatians 4:25). He,

recognize its independence of the Mosaic law, but combined both
