1 Kings 6:5 — 5. against the wall of the house he built chambers—On three sides, there were chambers in three stories, each story wider than the one beneath it, as the walls were narrowed or made thinner as they ascended, by a rebate being made, on which the beams of the side floor rested, without penetrating the wall. These chambers were approached from the right-hand side, in the interior of the under story, by a winding staircase of stone, which led to the middle and upper stories.
1 Chronicles 17:5 — 5. I . . . have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another—The literal rendering is, "I was walking in a tent and in a dwelling." The evident intention (as we may see from :-) was to lay stress upon the fact that God was a Mithhatlek (a travelling God) and went from one place to another with His tent and His entire dwelling (the dwelling included not merely the tent, but the fore-courts with the altar of burnt offerings, &c.) [BERTHEAU].
Job 19:5 — 5. magnify, c.—Speak proudly (Obadiah 1:12 Ezekiel 35:13). against me—emphatically repeated (Psalms 38:16). plead . . . reproach—English Version makes this part of the protasis, "if" being understood, and the apodosis beginning at Psalms 38:16- :.
Job 29:23 — 23. Image of :- continued. They waited for my salutary counsel, as the dry soil does for the refreshing rain. opened . . . mouth—panted for; Oriental image ( :-). The "early rain" is in autumn and onwards, while the seed is being sown. The "latter rain" is in March, and brings forward the harvest, which ripens in May or June. Between the early and latter rains, some rain falls, but not in such quantities as those rains. Between March and October no rain falls (Deuteronomy 11:14; James 5:7).
Leviticus 5:5 — 5. it shall be, when he shall be guilty . . . that he shall confess that he hath sinned in that thing—make a voluntary acknowledgment of his sin from the impulse of his own conscience, and before it come to the knowledge of the world. A previous discovery might have subjected him to some degree of punishment from which his spontaneous confession released him, but still he was considered guilty of trespass, to expiate which he was obliged by the ceremonial law to go through certain observances.
Song of Solomon 8:11 — of Jesus Christ's vineyard. Transference of it from the Jews, who rendered not the fruits, as is implied by the silence respecting any, to the Gentiles ( :-). Baal-hamon—equivalent to the owner of a multitude; so Israel in Solomon's day ( :-); so Isaiah 5:1, "a very fruitful hill" abounding in privileges, as in numbers. thousand pieces—namely, silverlings, or shekels. The vineyard had a thousand vines probably; a vine at a silverling (Isaiah 7:23), referring to this passage.
Isaiah 10:26 — 26. slaughter of—"stroke upon." Midian— (Isaiah 9:4; Judges 7:25). as his rod was upon the sea—rather, understanding "stroke" from the previous clause, "according to the stroke of His rod upon the Red Sea" (Exodus 14:16; Exodus 14:26). His "rod" on the Assyrian (Isaiah 10:24; Isaiah 10:26) stands in bold contrast to the Assyrian used as a "rod" to strike others (Isaiah 10:5). after the manner of Egypt—as He lifted it up against Egypt at the Red Sea.
Isaiah 13:19 — 19. glory of kingdoms— (Isaiah 14:4; Isaiah 47:5; Jeremiah 51:41). beauty of . . . excellency—Hebrew, "the glory of the pride" of the Chaldees; it was their glory and boast. as . . . Gomorrah—as utterly (Jeremiah 49:18; Jeremiah 50:40; Amos 4:11). Taken by Cyrus, by clearing out the canal made for emptying the superfluous waters of the Euphrates, and directing the river into this new channel, so that he was able to enter the city by the old bed in the night.
Isaiah 22:15 — 15. Go, get thee unto—rather, "Go in to" (that is, into the house to). treasurer—"him who dwells in the tabernacle" [JEROME]; namely, in a room of the temple set apart for the treasurer. Rather, "the king's friend," or "principal officer of the court" (1 Kings 4:5; 1 Kings 18:3; 1 Chronicles 27:33, "the king's counsellor") [MAURER]. "This" is prefixed contemptuously (1 Chronicles 27:33- :). unto Shebna—The Hebrew for "unto" indicates an accosting of Shebna with an unwelcome message.
Isaiah 47:11 — "Thou shall not see any dawn" (of alleviation) [MAURER]. put . . . off—rather, as Margin, "remove by expiation"; it shall be never ending. not know—unawares: which thou dost not apprehend. Proving the fallacy of thy divinations and astrology (Job 9:5; Psalms 35:8).
Isaiah 57:18 — 18. Rather, "I have seen his ways (in sin), yet will I heal him," that is, restore Israel spiritually and temporally (Jeremiah 33:6; Jeremiah 3:22; Hosea 14:4; Hosea 14:5) [HORSLEY]. I will . . . restore comforts unto him and to his mourners—However, the phrase, "his mourners," favors English Version; "his ways" will thus be his ways of repentance; and God's pardon on "seeing" them answers to the like promise (Isaiah 61:2; Isaiah 61:3; Jeremiah 31:18; Jeremiah 31:20).
Isaiah 60:22 — 22. little one—Even one, and that the smallest in number and rank, shall be multiplied a thousandfold in both respects (Micah 5:2; Matthew 13:31; Matthew 13:32). his time—not our time; we might wish to hasten it, but it will come in due time, as in the case of Jesus' first coming (Matthew 13:32- :); so in that of the restoration of Israel and the conversion of the world (Isaiah 66:8; Habakkuk 2:3; Acts 1:7; Hebrews 10:37).
Isaiah 64:6 — and by God's judgments from the congregation of the saints. righteousness—plural, "uncleanness" extended to every particular act of theirs, even to their prayers and praises. True of the best doings of the unregenerate (Philippians 3:6-8; Titus 1:15; Hebrews 11:6). filthy rags—literally, a "menstruous rag" (Leviticus 15:33; Leviticus 20:18; Lamentations 1:17). fade . . . leaf— (Psalms 90:5; Psalms 90:6).
Isaiah 65:13 — 13. eat—enjoy all blessings from me (Song of Solomon 5:1). hungry— (Amos 4:6; Amos 8:11). This may refer to the siege of Jerusalem under Titus, when 1,100,000 are said to have perished by famine; thus Isaiah 65:15 will refer to God's people without distinction of Jew and Gentile receiving "another name," namely, that of Christians [HOUBIGANT]. A further fulfilment may still remain, just before the creation of the "new heavens and earth," as the context, Isaiah 65:15- :, implies.
Numbers 4:13 — 13. shall take away the ashes from the altar, c.—The necessity of removing ashes from the altar plainly implies that sacrifices were offered in the wilderness (compare Exodus 18:12 Exodus 24:4), though that rebellious race seems frequently to have neglected the duty (Amos 5:25). No mention is made of the sacred fire; but as, by divine command, it was to be kept constantly burning, it must have been transferred to some pan or brazier under the covering, and borne by the appointed carriers.
Judges 8:5 — 5. he said unto the men of Succoth—that is, a place of tents or booths. The name seems to have been applied to the whole part of the Jordan valley on the west, as well as on the east side of the river, all belonging to the tribe of Gad (compare Genesis 33:17; 1 Kings 7:46; Joshua 13:27). Being engaged in the common cause of all Israel, he had a right to expect support and encouragement from his countrymen everywhere.
1 Samuel 27:5 — 5. let them give me a place in some town in the country—It was a prudent arrangement on the part of David; for it would prevent him being an object of jealous suspicion, or of mischievous plots among the Philistines. It would place his followers more beyond the risk of contamination by the idolatries of the court and capital; and it would give him an opportunity of making reprisals on the freebooting tribes that infested the common border of Israel and the Philistines.
2 Samuel 12:5 — 5. the man that hath done this thing shall surely die—This punishment was more severe than the case deserved, or than was warranted by the divine statute ( :-). The sympathies of the king had been deeply enlisted, his indignation aroused, but his conscience was still asleep; and at the time when he was most fatally indulgent to his own sins, he was most ready to condemn the delinquencies and errors of others. :-. HE APPLIES IT TO DAVID, WHO CONFESSES HIS SIN, AND IS PARDONED.
