Genesis 5:24 24. And Enoch walked with God—a
common phrase in Eastern countries denoting constant and familiar
intercourse.
was not; for God took him—In
Hebrews 11:5, we are informed that
he was translated to heaven—a mighty miracle, designed to effect
what ordinary means of instruction had failed to accomplish, gave a
palpable proof to an age of almost universal unbelief that the
doctrines which he had taught (Judges
Exodus 12:3 to
have yielded implicit obedience at this time to Moses. It is
observable that, amid all the hurry and bustle of such a departure,
their serious attention was to be given to a solemn act of religion.

kid might be taken (Exodus 12:5).
The service was to be a domestic one, for the deliverance was to be
from an evil threatened to every house in Egypt.
2 Chronicles 27:1-9 REINANDO BIEN, JOATAM PROSPERA.

Leviticus 12:2 2. If a woman, c.—The mother
of a boy was ceremonially unclean for a week, at the end of which the
child was circumcised (Genesis 17:12
Romans 4:11-13); the mother of

1 Timothy 2:15) for sin, which was
removed by Christ; everyone who came near her during that time
contracted a similar defilement. After these periods, visitors might

Numbers 23:9 a distinct, peculiar people, separated from the rest of the
nations in government, religion, customs, and divine protection ( :-). So that although I might be able to gratify your wishes
against other people, I can do nothing against them (Exodus 19:5;
Leviticus 20:24).
Deuteronomy 1:10 10. ye are this day as the stars of
heaven for multitude—This was neither an Oriental hyperbole nor
a mere empty boast. Abraham was told (Genesis 15:5;
Genesis 15:6) to look to the stars,
and though they "appear" innumerable, yet those seen by the
naked eye amount, in reality, to no more than three thousand ten in
both hemispheres. The Israelites already far exceeded that number,

Deuteronomy 4:5 5, 6. this is your wisdom and your
understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these

laws given them would raise their national character for intelligence
and wisdom. In

worketh—rather as
Greek, "worketh effectually." We cannot of
ourselves embrace the Gospel of grace: "the will" (Psalms 110:3;
2 Corinthians 3:5) comes solely of God's
gift to whom He will (John 6:44;
John 6:65); so also the power "to
do" (rather, "to work effectually," as the
Greek is the same as that for "worketh in"), that
is, effectual perseverance to the end, is wholly of God's gift
(Philippians
Colossians 1:23 His appearing ( :-).
grounded—Greek,
"founded," "fixed on the foundation"
(compare Note, see on :-
Luke 6:48; Luke 6:49).
settled—"steadfast."
"Grounded" respects the foundation on which
believers rest; "settled," their own steadfastness
(1 Peter 5:10). 1 Peter 5:10- : has the same Greek.

Colossians 1:9 filled—rather,
"may be filled"; a verb, often found in this Epistle
(Colossians 4:12; Colossians 4:17).
knowledge—Greek,
"full and accurate knowledge." Akin to the Greek for
"knew" (see on Colossians 1:6).
of his will—as to how
ye ought to walk (Ephesians 5:17); as
well as chiefly that "mystery of His will, according to His good
pleasure which He purposed in Himself; that in the fulness of times
He might gather together in one all things in Christ" (Ephesians 1:9;
Ephesians 1:10); God's "will,"

1 Thessalonians 1:3 of your faith; its alacrity in receiving
the truth, and in evincing itself by its fruits. Not an otiose
assent; but a realizing, working faith; not "in word
only," but in one continuous chain of "work"
(singular, not plural, works), 1 Thessalonians 1:5-10;
James 2:22. So "the work of
faith" in 2 Thessalonians 1:11 implies
its perfect development (compare 2 Thessalonians 1:11- :). The other governing substantives similarly mark
respectively the characteristic manifestation of the grace which

2 Timothy 1:3 footing the Jewish and Christian service of God; but simply to
assert his own conscientious service of God as he had received it
from his progenitors (not Abraham, Isaac, c., whom he calls
"the fathers," not "progenitors" as the Greek
is here Romans 9:5). The memory of
those who had gone before to whom he is about to be gathered, is now,
on the eve of death, pleasant to him; hence also, he calls to mind
the faith of the mother and grandmother of Timothy; as he walks in
the faith of his forefathers
Titus 1:1 1. servant of God—not found
elsewhere in the same connection. In :- it is "servant of Jesus Christ" (Galatians 1:10;
Philippians 1:1; compare Acts 16:17;
Revelation 1:1; Revelation 15:3).
In Romans 1:1, there follows,
"called to be an apostle," which corresponds to the
general designation of the office first, "servant of
GOD," here, followed
by the special description, "apostle of Jesus Christ."

God—by "wilful" apostasy. So he treads under foot God
Himself who "glorified His Son as an high priest"
(Hebrews 5:5; Hebrews 6:6).
an unholy thing—literally,
"common," as opposed to "sanctified." No better
than the blood of a common man, thus involving the consequence that
Christ, in claiming to be God, was guilty of blasphemy, and so
deserved to die!

Hebrews 3 overview 2:18). Parallel with this
line of argument as to His superiority to angels (Hebrews 2:18- :) runs that which here follows as to His superiority to Moses
(Hebrews 3:3): (1) because as Son
over the house; He is above the servant in the house (Hebrews 3:5;
Hebrews 3:6), just as the angels
were shown to be but ministering (serving) spirits (Hebrews 3:6- :), whereas He is the Son (Hebrews 3:7;
Hebrews 3:8); (2) because the
bringing of Israel into the promised rest, which was not finished by
Moses, is accomplished
1 John 2:19 free and sovereign grace
that draws any to Himself and to heaven. To God the latter shall
ascribe wholly their salvation from first to last: the former shall
reproach themselves alone, and not God's decree, with their
condemnation (1 John 3:9; 1 John 5:18).
that they were not all of
us—This translation would imply that some of the Antichrists
are of us! Translate, therefore, "that all (who are for a
time among us) are not of us." Compare 1 John 5:18- :, "There must be heresies among you, that they
1 John 2:20 believers have wherewith to
withstand. Antichrists ( :-), namely, the chrism (so the Greek: a play
upon similar sounds), or "anointing unguent," namely, the
Holy Spirit (more plainly mentioned further on, as in John's style,
1 John 3:24; 1 John 4:13;
1 John 5:6), which they ("ye"
is emphatical in contrast to those apostates, 1 John 5:6- :) have "from the Holy One, Christ" (John 1:33;
John 3:34; John 15:26;
John 16:14): "the righteous"
(1 John 2:1), "pure" (1 John 2:1- :), "the Holy One" (1 John 2:1- :) "of
1 John 5:20 ALFORD
wrongly says, He was the life, but not eternal life.
The Father is indeed eternal life as its source, but the Son
also is that eternal life manifested, as the very passage (John 17:3- :) which ALFORD
quotes, proves against him. Compare also 1 John 5:11;
1 John 5:13. Plainly it is as the
Mediator of ETERNAL LIFE
to us that Christ is here contemplated. The Greek is,
"The true God and eternal life is this" Jesus Christ, that
is, In believing in Him we believe in the true God, and have eternal
life.
