was troubled—literally,
"violently agitated," or disquieted (Psalms 39:6;

Psalms 87:5 5. The writer resumes—
This and that man—literally,
"man and man," or many (Genesis 14:10;

Shulamite—new name
applied to her now for the first time. Feminine of Solomon,
Prince of Peace; His bride, daughter of peace, accepting and
proclaiming it (Isaiah 52:7; John 14:27;
Romans 5:1; Ephesians 2:17).
Historically, this name answers to the time when, not without a
divine design in it, the young Church met in Solomon's porch
(Acts 3:11; Acts 5:12).
The entreaty, "Return, O Shulamite," answers to the
people's
Song of Solomon 7:5 5. upon thee—the headdress
"upon" her.
Carmel—signifying a
well-cultivated field (Isaiah 35:2).
In Song of Solomon 5:15 He is compared to
majestic Lebanon; she here, to fruitful Carmel. Her
headdress, or crown (2 Timothy 4:8;
1 Peter 5:4). Also the
Isaiah 4:2 as the fruit of
their being "written" in the book of life by sovereign love
(Isaiah 4:3); the means of it are
the "spirit of judgment" and that of "burning"
(Isaiah 4:4). Their "defense"
by the special presence of Jesus Christ is promised (Isaiah 4:5;
Isaiah 4:6).
branch—the sprout of
JEHOVAH. Messiah (Jeremiah 23:5;
Jeremiah 33:15; Zechariah 3:8;
Zechariah 6:12; Luke 1:78,
Margin). The parallel clause does not, as MAURER
objects, oppose this; for "fruit of the earth" answers to
"branch"; He shall
Isaiah 60:19 19. The sun and moon, the
brightest objects by day and night, shall be eclipsed by the
surpassing glory of God manifesting Himself to thee (Isaiah 30:26;
Zechariah 2:5; Revelation 21:23;
Revelation 22:5).
Jeremiah 2:30 30. (Jeremiah 5:3;
Jeremiah 6:29; Isaiah 1:5;
Isaiah 9:13).
your children—that is,
your people, you.
your . . . sword . . .

elders—some of the
"princes" mentioned (Acts 5:34- :) those whose age, as well as dignity, would give weight to
the precedents of past times which they adduce.
Ezekiel 6:8 8. Mitigation of the extreme
severity of their punishment; still their life shall be a wretched
one, and linked with exile (Ezekiel 5:2;
Ezekiel 5:12; Ezekiel 12:16;
Ezekiel 14:22; Jeremiah 44:28).
Matthew 2:5 5. And they said unto him, In
Bethlehem of Judea—a prompt and involuntary testimony from the
highest tribunal; which yet at length condemned Him to die.
for thus it is written by the

John 5:44 44. How can ye believe, &c.—(See
on John 5:40). The "will
not" of John 5:40, and
"cannot" here are just different features of the
same awful state of the human heart.
2 Corinthians 5:10 10. appear—rather, "be
made manifest," namely, in our true character. So "appear,"
Greek, "be manifested" ( :-; compare 1 Corinthians 4:5). We
are at all times, even now, manifest to God; then we shall be
so to the assembled intelligent universe and to ourselves: for the
judgment shall be not only in order to assign the everlasting portion
to each, but to vindicate God's righteousness,
2 Corinthians 8:3 3-5. they were willing—rather,
supply from 2 Corinthians 8:5, the
ellipsis thus, "According to their power . . . yea, and beyond
their power, THEY GAVE."
of themselves—not only
not being besought, but themselves beseeching us.
Philippians 4:5 5. moderation—from a Greek
root, "to yield," whence yieldingness [TRENCH];
or from a root, "it is fitting," whence "reasonableness

So "in," and "through," occur in the same
sentence, 1 Peter 1:22, "Ye
have purified your souls in obeying the truth through

in the Greek. The "in (fulfilment of) which will"
(compare the use of in, 1 Peter 1:5- :, "wherein [in which grace] He hath made us accepted, in
the Beloved"), expresses the originating cause; "THROUGH
the offering . . . of Christ," the instrumental

puts into a state of salvation) us also (two oldest
manuscripts read 'you' for 'us': You also, as well as
Noah and his party), to wit, baptism." Water saved Noah not of
itself, but by sustaining the ark built in faith, resting on
