Psalms 11:6 6. Their punishment is described
by vivid figures denoting abundant, sudden, furious, and utter
destruction (compare Genesis 19:24;
Job 18:15; Psalms 7:15;
Psalms 9:15).
cup—is a frequent
figure for God's favor or wrath (Psalms 16:5;
Psalms 23:5; Matthew 20:22;
Matthew 20:23).
Psalms 53:5 5. Instead of assurances of
God's presence with the pious, and a complaint of the wicked, Psalms 14:5;
Psalms 14:6 portrays the ruin of the
latter, whose "bones" even "are scattered"
(compare Psalms 141:7), and who
are put to shame as contemptuously rejected of God.
Proverbs 4:16 16, 17. The reason is found in
the character of sinners, whose zeal to do evil is forcibly depicted
(Proverbs 6:4; Psalms 36:5).
They live by flagrant vices (Psalms 36:5- :). Some prefer to render, "Their bread is wickedness,
their drink violence" (compare Job 15:16;
Job 34:7).
Isaiah 22:13 13. Notwithstanding Jehovah's
"call to mourning" ( :-), many shall make the desperate state of affairs a reason
for reckless revelry (Isaiah 5:11;
Isaiah 5:12; Isaiah 5:14;
Jeremiah 18:12; 1 Corinthians 15:32).
1 Corinthians 15:32- :. PROPHECY
THAT SHEBNA
SHOULD BE
DEPOSED FROM BEING
PREFECT OF THE PALACE,
AND ELIAKIM
PROMOTED TO THE OFFICE.
In Isaiah 36:3;
Isaiah 36:22; Isaiah 37:2,
we
Isaiah 37:3 3. rebuke—that is, the Lord's
rebuke for His people's sins (Psalms 149:7;
Hosea 5:9).
blasphemy—blasphemous
railing of Rab-shakeh.
the children, &c.—a
proverbial expression for, We are in the most extreme danger and have
no power to avert it (compare Hosea 5:9- :).
Isaiah 49:4 4. I—Messiah.
in vain—comparatively
in the case of the greater number of His own countrymen. "He
came unto His own, and His own received Him not" (Isaiah 53:1-3;
Luke 19:14; John 1:11;
John 7:5). Only a hundred twenty
disciples met after His personal ministry was ended (John 7:5- :).
yet . . . my judgment . . .
with the Lord—Ultimately, God will do justice to My cause, and
reward (Margin for "work,"
Jeremiah 32:5 5. visit him—in a good sense
(Jeremiah 27:22); referring to the
honor paid Zedekiah at his death and burial (Jeremiah 34:4;
Jeremiah 34:5). Perhaps, too, before
his death he was treated by Nebuchadnezzar with some favor.
though ye fight . . . shall
not prosper— (Jeremiah 21:4).
Jeremiah 5:28 28. shine—the effect of
fatness on the skin (Deuteronomy 32:15).
They live a life of self-indulgence.
overpass . . . the
wicked—exceed even the Gentiles in wickedness (Jeremiah 2:33;
Ezekiel 5:6; Ezekiel 5:7).
judge not . . . fatherless—
(Isaiah 1:23).
yet . . . prosper— (Isaiah 1:23- :).
Jeremiah 8:5 5. slidden . . . backsliding—rather,
as the Hebrew is the same as in :-, to which this verse refers, "turned away with a
perpetual turning away."
perpetual—in contrast
to the "arise" ("rise again," :-).
refuse to return—in
contrast to, "shall he . . . not return" (Jeremiah 8:4;
Jeremiah 5:3).
Ezekiel 16:37 had been always
her enemies. "God will make him, who leaves God for the world,
disgraced even in the eyes of the world, and indeed the more so the
nearer he formerly stood to Himself" [HENGSTENBERG],
(Isaiah 47:3; Jeremiah 13:26;
Hosea 2:12; Nahum 3:5).
all . . . thou hast hated—the
Edomites and Philistines; also Moab and Ammon especially (Nahum 3:5- :).
I . . . will discover thy
nakedness—punishment in kind, as she had "discovered her
nakedness through whoredoms" (Nahum 3:5- :); the sin and its
Ezekiel 27:9 9. Gebal—a Phoelignician city
and region between Beirut and Tripolis, famed for skilled workmen
(1 Kings 5:18, Margin; 1 Kings 5:18- :).
calkers—stoppers of
chinks in a vessel: carrying on the metaphor as to Tyre.
occupy thy merchandise—that
is, to exchange merchandise with thee.
Matthew 21:33 There was
a certain householder, which planted a vineyard—(See on :-).
and hedged it round about,
and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower—These details
are taken, as is the basis of the parable itself, from that beautiful
parable of Isaiah 5:1-7, in
order to fix down the application and sustain it by Old Testament
authority.
and let it out to
husbandmen—These are just the ordinary spiritual guides of the
people, under whose care and culture the fruits of righteousness are
expected to
1 Corinthians 6:16 16. Justification of his having
called fornicators "members of an harlot" ( :-).
joined—by carnal
intercourse; literally, "cemented to": cleaving to.
one body—with her.
saith he—God speaking
by Adam (Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:5).
"He which made them at the beginning said," &c. (Matthew 19:5- :).
2 Corinthians 6:10 10. The "as" no longer
is used to express the opinion of his adversaries, but the real state
of him and his fellow laborers.
making many rich—Spiritually
(1 Corinthians 1:5), after the example of
our Lord, who "by His poverty made many rich" (1 Corinthians 1:5- :).
having nothing—Whatever
of earthly goods we have, and these are few, we have as though we had
not; as tenants removable at will, not owners (1 Corinthians
Ephesians 2:18 18. Translate, "For it is
through Him (John 14:6; John 14:6- :) that we have our access (Ephesians 3:12;
Romans 5:2), both of us, in (that
is, united in, that is, "by," Romans 5:2- :, Greek) one Spirit to the Father," namely, as
our common Father, reconciled to both alike; whence flows the removal
of all separation between Jew and Gentile. The oneness of "the
Spirit,"
Ephesians 5:4 4. filthiness—obscenity in act
or gesture.
foolish talking—the
talk of fools, which is folly and sin together. The Greek
of it, and of "filthiness," occurs nowhere else in the New
Testament.
nor—rather, "or"
(compare Ephesians 5:3).
jesting—Greek,
"eutrapelia"; found nowhere else in the New
Testament: implying strictly that versatility which turns
about and adapts itself, without regard to principle, to the shifting
circumstances of the moment, and to the varying moods of
1 Timothy 5:11 11. younger—than sixty years
old (1 Timothy 5:9).
refuse—to take on the
roll of presbyteress widows.
wax wanton—literally,
"over-strong" (1 Timothy 5:9- :).
against Christ—rebelling
against Christ, their proper Bridegroom [JEROME].
they will—Greek,
"they wish"; their desire is to marry again.
Hebrews 7:28 word—"the
word" confirmed by "the oath."
which—which oath
was after the law, namely, in Hebrews 7:27- :, abrogating the preceding law-priesthood.
the Son—contrasted with
"men."
consecrated—Greek,
"made perfect" once for all, as in Hebrews 2:10;
Hebrews 5:9; see on Hebrews 5:9- :; Hebrews 5:9. Opposed to
"having infirmity." Consecrated as a perfected priest
by His perfected sacrifice, and consequent anointing and exaltation
to the right hand of the Father.
James 1:25 25. looketh into—literally,
"stoopeth down to take a close look into." Peers into:
stronger than "beholdeth," or "contemplated," :-. A blessed curiosity if it be efficacious in bearing fruit
[BENGEL].
perfect law of liberty—the
Gospel rule of life,
1 John 5:10 10. hath the witness—of God,
by His Spirit (1 John 5:8).
in himself—God's Spirit
dwelling in him and witnessing that "Jesus is the Lord,"
"the Christ," and "the Son of God" (1 John 5:1;
1 John 5:5). The witness of the
Spirit in the believer himself to his own sonship is
not here expressed, but follows
