Job 24:11 — 11. Which—"They," the poor, "press the oil within their wall"; namely, not only in the open fields ( :-), but also in the wall-enclosed vineyards and olive gardens of the oppressor (Isaiah 5:5). Yet they are not allowed to quench their "thirst" with the grapes and olives. Here, thirsty; Isaiah 5:5- :, hungry.
Proverbs 5:15 — 15-20. By figures, in which well, cistern, and fountain [Proverbs 5:15; Proverbs 5:18] represent the wife, and rivers of waters [Proverbs 5:16] the children, men are exhorted to constancy and satisfaction in lawful conjugal enjoyments. In Proverbs 5:16- :, fountains (in the plural) rather denote the produce or waters of a spring, literally, "what is from a spring," and corresponds with "rivers of waters."

Isaiah 14:22 — 22. against them—the family of the king of Babylon. name—all the male representatives, so that the name shall become extinct (Isaiah 56:5; Ruth 4:5). remnant—all that is left of them. The dynasty shall cease (Ruth 4:5- :). Compare as to Babylon in general, Ruth 4:5- :.
Isaiah 5:13 — 13. are gone—The prophet sees the future as if it were before his eyes. no knowledge—because of their foolish recklessness (Isaiah 5:12; Isaiah 1:3; Hosea 4:6; Luke 19:44). famished—awful contrast to their luxurious feasts (Isaiah 5:11; Isaiah 5:12). multitude—plebeians in contradistinction to the "honorable men," or nobles. thirst— (Psalms 107:4; Psalms 107:5). Contrast to their drinking (Isaiah 5:11). In their deportation and exile, they shall hunger and thirst.
Jeremiah 3:14 — 14. I am married—literally, "I am Lord," that is, husband to you (so :-; compare Hosea 2:19; Hosea 2:20; Isaiah 54:5). GESENIUS, following the Septuagint version of Isaiah 54:5- :, and Paul's quotation of it (Isaiah 54:5- :), translates, "I have rejected you"; so the corresponding Arabic, and the idea of lordship, may pass into that of looking down upon, and so
Ezekiel 16:32 — 32. instead of her husband—referring to Numbers 5:19; Numbers 5:20; Numbers 5:29. FAIRBAIRN translates, "whilst under her husband."
Ezekiel 21:26 — 26. diadem—rather, "the miter" of the holy priest (Exodus 28:4; Zechariah 3:5). His priestly emblem as representative of the priestly people. Both this and "the crown," the emblem of the kingdom, were to be removed, until they should be restored and united in the Mediator, Messiah (Psalms 110:2; Psalms 110:4; Zechariah 6:13), [FAIRBAIRN].
Amos 4:12 — encountering Him as thy foe (Jeremiah 46:14; Luke 14:31; Luke 14:32). But as that would be madness to think of (Isaiah 27:4; Ezekiel 22:14; Hebrews 10:31), see what can be done towards mitigating the severity of the coming judgment, by penitence (Isaiah 27:5; 1 Corinthians 11:31). This latter exhortation is followed up in Amos 5:4; Amos 5:6; Amos 5:8; Amos 5:14; Amos 5:15.
Habakkuk 3:5 — 5. pestilence—to destroy His people's foes (1 Samuel 5:9; 1 Samuel 5:11). As Jehovah's advent is glorious to His people, so it is terrible to His foes. burning coals— 1 Samuel 5:11- : favors English Version. But the parallelism requires, as the Margin translates, "burning disease" (compare Deuteronomy 32:24; Psalms 91:6). went . . . at his feet—that is, after Him, as His attendants (Psalms 91:6- :).
Deuteronomy 14:1 — 1. ye shall not cut yourselves . . . for the dead—It was a common practice of idolaters, both on ceremonious occasions of their worship ( :-), and at funerals (compare Jeremiah 16:6; Jeremiah 41:5), to make ghastly incisions on their faces and other parts of their persons with their finger nails or sharp instruments. The making a large bare space between the eyebrows was another heathen custom in honor of the dead (see on Jeremiah 41:5- :; Jeremiah

Ephesians 5:11 — 11. unfruitful works of darkness—Sins are terminated in themselves, and therefore are called "works," not "fruits" (Galatians 5:19; Galatians 5:22). Their only fruit is that which is not in a true sense fruit (Galatians 5:22- :), namely, "death" (Romans 6:21; Galatians 6:8). Plants cannot bear "fruit" in the absence of light.
