Song of Solomon 1:2 — 2. him—abruptly. She names him not, as is natural to one whose heart is full of some much desired friend: so Mary Magdalene at the sepulchre ( :-), as if everyone must know whom she means, the one chief object of her desire (Psalms 73:25; Matthew 13:44-46; Philippians 3:7; Philippians 3:8). kiss—the token of peace from the Prince of Peace (Philippians 3:8- :); "our Peace" (Psalms 85:10; Colossians 1:21; Ephesians 2:14). of his mouth—marking the tenderest affection. For a king to permit his hands,
Song of Solomon 3:6 — lower than Jerusalem [MAURER]. pillars of smoke—from the perfumes burned around Him and His bride. Image from Israel and the tabernacle (answering to "bed," :-) marching through the desert with the pillar of smoke by day and fire by night (Exodus 14:20), and the pillars of smoke ascending from the altars of incense and of atonement; so Jesus Christ's righteousness, atonement, and ever-living intercession. Balaam, the last representative of patriarchism, was required to curse the Jewish Church,
Daniel 10:12 — 12. Fear not—Be not affrighted at my presence. didst set thine heart to understand—what shall come to pass to thy people at the last times (compare Daniel 10:14). chasten thyself— (Daniel 10:2; Daniel 10:3). thy words were heard— (Acts 10:4). Prayer is heard at once in heaven, though the sensible answer may seem to be delayed. God's messenger was detained on the way (Acts 10:4- :) by the opposition of the
Daniel 10:2 — mourning—that is, afflicting myself by fasting from "pleasant bread, flesh and wine" (Daniel 10:3), as a sign of sorrow, not for its own sake. Compare Daniel 10:3- :, "fast," answering to "mourn" (Daniel 10:3- :). Compare 1 Corinthians 8:8; 1 Timothy 4:3, which prove that "fasting" is not an indispensable Christian obligation; but merely an outward expression of sorrow, and separation from ordinary worldly enjoyments, in order to give one's self to prayer (1 Timothy 4:3- :). Daniel's mourning was
Daniel 3 overview — power in the height of its insolence. The latter advances from mere self-glorification, in the fourth chapter, to open opposition to God in the fifth. Nebuchadnezzar demands homage to be paid to his image (Daniel 3:1-6), and boasts of his power (Daniel 4:1-18). But Belshazzar goes further, blaspheming God by polluting His holy vessels. There is a similar progression in the conduct of God's people. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego refuse positive homage to the image of the world power (Daniel 4:1-27.4.18-
Micah 4:9 — thee?—asked tauntingly. There is a king in her; but it is the same as if there were none, so helpless to devise means of escape are he and his counsellors [MAURER]. Or, Zion's pains are because her king is taken away from her (Jeremiah 52:9; Lamentations 4:20; Ezekiel 12:13) [CALVIN]. The former is perhaps the preferable view (compare Ezekiel 12:13- :). The latter, however, describes better Zion's kingless state during her present long dispersion (Hosea 3:4; Hosea 3:5).
Luke 10:31 — [TRENCH]. saw him—It was not inadvertently that he acted. came and looked—a further aggravation. passed by—although the law expressly required the opposite treatment even of the beast not only of their brethren, but of their enemy (Deuteronomy 22:4; Exodus 23:4; Exodus 23:5; compare Isaiah 58:7).
John 4:34 — 34. My meat is, c.—"A Servant here to fulfil a prescribed work, to do and to finish, that is 'meat' to Me and of this, while you were away, I have had My fill." And of what does He speak thus? Of the condescension, pity, patience, wisdom He had been laying
John 4:44 — 44. For Jesus testified, c.—This verse had occasioned much discussion. For it seems strange, if "His own country" here means Nazareth, which was in Galilee, that it should be said He came to Galilee because in one of its towns He expected no good reception.
Acts 19:29 — 29. having caught Gaius and Aristarchus—disappointed of Paul, as at Thessalonica (Acts 17:5; Acts 17:6). They are mentioned in Acts 20:4; Acts 27:2; Romans 16:23; 1 Corinthians 1:14; and probably 3 John 1:1. If it was in the house of Aquila and Priscilla that he found an asylum (see 3 John 1:1- :), that would explain Romans 16:3; Romans 16:4, where he says of them that "for his life
Acts 25:23 — 23. when Agrippa was come, and Bernice, with great pomp—in the same city in which their father, on account of his pride, had perished, eaten up by worms [WETST]. with the chief captains—(See on Acts 25:2). Acts 4:31 — overthrow of all opposing powers in which this was to issue. they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and spake, c.—The Spirit rested upon the entire community, first, in the very way they had asked, so that they "spake the word with boldness" (Acts 4:29 Acts 4:31); next, in melting down all selfishness, and absorbing even the feeling of individuality in an intense and glowing realization of Christian unity. The community of goods was but an outward expression of this, and natural in such circumstances.
Acts 4:34 — overthrow of all opposing powers in which this was to issue. they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and spake, c.—The Spirit rested upon the entire community, first, in the very way they had asked, so that they "spake the word with boldness" (Acts 4:29 Acts 4:31); next, in melting down all selfishness, and absorbing even the feeling of individuality in an intense and glowing realization of Christian unity. The community of goods was but an outward expression of this, and natural in such circumstances.
Acts 4:37 — overthrow of all opposing powers in which this was to issue. they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and spake, c.—The Spirit rested upon the entire community, first, in the very way they had asked, so that they "spake the word with boldness" (Acts 4:29 Acts 4:31); next, in melting down all selfishness, and absorbing even the feeling of individuality in an intense and glowing realization of Christian unity. The community of goods was but an outward expression of this, and natural in such circumstances.

What catholic love, what all-absorbing spirituality, what impassioned devotion to the glory of Christ among men!

2 Corinthians 6:1-18 — DE LOS FRUTOS DEL ESPIRITU SANTO: SU GENEROSIDAD DE CORAZON PARA CON ELLOS PIDE EL ENSANCHE DEL CORAZON DE ELLOS PARA CON EL. 2 Corinthians 6:9 — :-). CONYBEARE explains, "Unknown by men, yet acknowledged by God" (1 Corinthians 13:12).
