Genesis 12:5 5. into the land of Canaan . . .
they came—with his wife and an orphan nephew. Abram reached his
destination in safety, and thus the first promise was made good.
Exodus 8:5 5, 6. Stretch forth thine hand with
thy rod over the streams, &c. The miracle consisted in the
reptiles leaving their marshes at the very time he commanded them.
1 Chronicles 6:5 5. Uzzi—It is supposed that,
in his days, the high priesthood was, for unrecorded reasons,
transferred from Eleazar's family to Ithamar's, in which it continued
for several generations.
Psalms 10:2 2. Literally, "In pride of
the wicked they (the poor or humble, Psalms 10:17;
Psalms 12:5) shall be taken in the
devices they (the proud) have imagined."

working deceitfully—
(Psalms 10:7), as a keen, smoothly
moving razor, cutting quietly, but deeply.
Proverbs 14:32 32. driven—thrust out
violently (compare Psalms 35:5;
Psalms 35:6).
hath hope—trusteth
(Proverbs 10:2; Proverbs 11:4;
Psalms 2:12), implying assurance of
help.
Proverbs 21:28 28. (Compare :-).
that heareth—or heeds
instruction, and so grows wise.
speaketh constantly—or
sincerely (compare Habakkuk 1:5), and
hence is believed (Proverbs 12:19;
James 1:19).
Proverbs 24:17 17, 18. Yet let none rejoice
over the fate of evildoers, lest God punish their wrong spirit by
relieving the sufferer (compare Proverbs 17:5;
Job 31:29).
Jeremiah 34:11 11. During the interruption of
the siege by Pharaoh-hophra (compare Jeremiah 34:21;

Lamentations 2:5 5. an enemy— ( :-).
mourning and
lamentation—There is a play of similar sounds in the original,
"sorrow and sadness," to heighten the effect ( :-, Hebrew; Ezekiel 35:3,
Margin).
Vau.
Ezekiel 2:5 5. forbear—namely, to hear.
yet shall know—Even if
they will not hear, at least they will not have ignorance to plead as
the cause of their perversity ( :-).
Ezekiel 3:11 11. thy people—who ought to be
better disposed to hearken to thee, their fellow countryman, than
hadst thou been a foreigner (Ezekiel 3:5;
Ezekiel 3:6).
Ezekiel 39:28 28. The Jews, having no
dominion, settled country, or fixed property to detain them, may
return at any time without difficulty (compare Hosea 3:4;
Hosea 3:5).
Zechariah 5:5 5. went forth—The interpreting
angel had withdrawn after the vision of the roll to receive a fresh
revelation from the Divine Angel to communicate to the prophet.
Luke 3:5 5. Every valley, &c.—levelling
and smoothing, obvious figures, the sense of which is in the
first words of the proclamation, "Prepare ye the way of the
Lord."
Acts 6:5 5. Stephen, &c.—As this
and the following names are all Greek, it is likely they were
all of the "Grecian" class, which would effectually restore
mutual confidence.
