Job 21:20 20. Another questionable
assertion of the friends, that the sinner sees his own and his
children's destruction in his lifetime.
drink— (Psalms 11:6;
Isaiah 51:17; Lamentations 4:21).
Job 27:1 1. parable—applied in the East
to a figurative sententious embodiment of wisdom in poetic form, a
gnome (Psalms 49:4).
continued—proceeded to
put forth; implying elevation of discourse.
Job 32:18 18. "I am full of words,"
whereas the friends have not a word more to say.
the spirit— (Job 32:8;
Job 33:4; Jeremiah 20:9;
Acts 18:5).
Job 38:16 16. springs—fountains beneath
the sea (Psalms 95:4; Psalms 95:5).
search—Rather, "the
inmost recesses"; literally, "that which is only found by
searching," the deep caverns of ocean.
Psalms 147:4 4, 5. God's power in nature ( :-, and often) is presented as a pledge of His power to
help His people.
telleth . . . stars—what
no man can do (Genesis 15:5).
Psalms 41:4 4. I said—I asked the mercy I
show.
heal my soul—(Compare
Psalms 30:2). "Sin and
suffering are united," is one of the great teachings of the
Psalms.
Psalms 42:5 5. Hence he chides his
despondent soul, assuring himself of a time of joy.
help of his countenance—or,
"face" (compare Numbers 6:25;
Psalms 4:6; Psalms 16:11).
Psalms 60:4 4, 5. Yet to God's banner they
will rally, and pray that, led and sustained by His power (right
hand, Psalms 17:7; Psalms 20:6),
they may be safe.
Psalms 63:4 4. Thus—literally, "Truly."
will I bless—praise
Thee (Psalms 34:1).
lift up my hands—in
worship (compare Psalms 28:2).
in thy name—in praise
of Thy perfections.
Psalms 74:4 4. roar—with bestial fury.
congregations—literally,
"worshipping assemblies."
ensigns—literally,
"signs"—substituted their idolatrous objects, or tokens
of authority, for those articles of the temple which denoted God's
presence.
Psalms 8:4 4. man—literally, "frail
man," an allusion to his essential infirmity.
son of man—only varies
the form of speech.
visitest—in favor ( :-). This favor is now more fully illustrated.
Psalms 97:11 11. sown—to spring forth
abundantly for such, who alone can and well may rejoice in the holy
government of their sovereign Lord (compare Psalms 30:4;
Psalms 32:11).
Proverbs 16:31 31. (Compare :-).
if—or, which may
be supplied properly, or without it the sense is as in Proverbs 3:16;
Proverbs 4:10, that piety is blessed
with long life.
Proverbs 20:7 7. The conduct of good men
proclaims their sound principles. God's covenant and their good
example secure blessing to their children (Proverbs 4:26;
Psalms 112:1; Psalms 112:2).
Proverbs 24:11 11, 12. Neglect of known duty is
sin (James 4:17).
ready—literally,
"bowing down"
to be slain—that is,
unjustly. God's retributive justice cannot be avoided by professed
ignorance.
Ecclesiastes 7:5 5. (Psalms 141:4;
Psalms 141:5). Godly reproof offends
the flesh, but benefits the spirit. Fools' songs in the house of
mirth please the flesh, but injure the soul.
Isaiah 51:8 8. (See on :-; Job 4:18-20).
Not that the moth eats men up, but they shall be destroyed by
as insignificant instrumentality as the moth that eats a garment.
Jeremiah 12:12 12. high places—Before, He had
threatened the plains; now, the hills.
wilderness—not an
uninhabited desert, but high lands of pasturage, lying between Judea
and Chaldea (Jeremiah 4:11).
Jeremiah 45:4 4. that which I have built . . .
planted I will pluck up— ( :-). This whole nation (the Jews) which I founded and planted
with such extraordinary care and favor, I will overthrow.
Jeremiah 48:21 21. plain— ( :-). Not only the mountainous regions, but also the plain,
shall be wasted.
Holon—(Compare :-).
Jahazah— (Numbers 21:23;
Isaiah 15:4).
Mephaath— (Joshua 13:18;
Joshua 21:37).
