Exodus 7:4 4, 5. I may lay mine hand upon
Egypt, &c.—The succession of terrible judgments with which
the country was about to be scourged would fully demonstrate the
supremacy of Israel's God.
Job 41:31 31. Whenever he moves.
sea—the Nile (Isaiah 19:5;
Nahum 3:8).
pot of ointment—the
vessel in which it is mixed. Appropriate to the crocodile, which
emits a musky smell.
Job 8:14 14. cut off—so GESENIUS;
or, to accord with the metaphor of the spider's "house,"
"The confidence (on which he builds) shall be laid in ruins"
(Isaiah 59:5; Isaiah 59:6).
Psalms 113:1 1-3. Earnestness and zeal are
denoted by the emphatic repetitions.
servants of the Lord—or,
all the people of God.
name of the Lord—perfections
(Psalms 5:11; Psalms 111:9).
Psalms 29:2 2. name—as (Psalms 5:11;
Psalms 8:1).
beauty of holiness—the
loveliness of a spiritual worship, of which the perceptible beauty of
the sanctuary worship was but a type.
Psalms 29:5 5, 6. The tall and large cedars,
especially of Lebanon, are shivered, utterly broken. The waving of
the mountain forests before the wind is expressed by the figure of
skipping or leaping.
Psalms 57:3 3. from . . . swallow me up—that
pants in rage after me (Psalms 56:2).
mercy and . . . truth—
(Psalms 25:10; Psalms 36:5),
as messengers (Psalms 43:3) sent to
deliver him.
Psalms 59:4 4, 5. prepare, c.—literally,
"set themselves as in array."
awake—(Compare Psalms 3:7
Psalms 7:6), appeals to God in His
covenant relation to His people (Psalms 7:6- :).
Psalms 68:29 29. thy temple—literally,
"over"
Jerusalem—His palace or
residence (Psalms 5:7) symbolized
His protecting presence among His people, and hence is the object of
homage on the part of others.
Psalms 88:9 9. Mine eye mourneth—literally,
"decays," or fails, denoting exhaustion (Psalms 6:7;
Psalms 31:9).
I . . . called—
(Psalms 86:5; Psalms 86:7).
stretched out—for help
(Psalms 44:20).
Proverbs 1:5 5, 6. Such writings the wise,
who pursue right ends by right means, will value.
learning—not the act,
but matter of it.
wise counsels—or the
art and principles of governing.
Proverbs 3:5 5. Trust . . . heart—This is
the center and marrow of true wisdom (Proverbs 22:19;
Proverbs 28:25). The positive duty has
its corresponding negation in the admonition against self-confidence.
Isaiah 19:16 16. like . . . women—timid and
helpless (Jeremiah 51:30; Nahum 3:13).
shaking of . . . hand—His
judgments by means of the invaders (Isaiah 10:5;
Isaiah 10:32; Isaiah 11:15).
Isaiah 30:31 31. The Assyrian rod which beat
shall itself be beaten, and that by the mere voice of the
Lord, that is, an unseen divine agency (Isaiah 10:5;
Isaiah 10:24).
Isaiah 54:10 10. (Isaiah 51:6;
Psalms 89:33; Psalms 89:34;
Romans 11:29).
covenant of my peace—
(2 Samuel 23:5). The covenant
whereby I have made thee at peace with Me.
Jeremiah 32:41 41. rejoice over them—
(Deuteronomy 30:9; Isaiah 62:5;
Isaiah 65:19; Zephaniah 3:17).
plant . . . assuredly—rather,
"in stability," that is, permanently, for ever (Jeremiah 24:6;
Amos 9:15).
Ezekiel 18:9 9. truly—with integrity.
surely live—literally,
"live in life." Prosper in this life, but still more in the
life to come (Proverbs 3:1; Proverbs 3:2;
Amos 5:4).
Numbers 34:5 5. river of Egypt—the ancient
brook Sihor, the Rhinocolura of the Greeks, a little to the south of
El-Arish, where this wady gently descends towards the Mediterranean
(Joshua 13:3).
Micah 6:10 10. Are there yet—notwithstanding
all My warnings. Is there to be no end of acquiring treasures by
wickedness? Jehovah is speaking ( :-).
scant measure . . .
abominable— (Proverbs 11:1;
Amos 8:5).
2 Samuel 19:20 20. I am come the first . . . of all
the house of Joseph—that is, before all the rest of Israel
(Psalms 77:15; Psalms 80:1;
Psalms 81:5; Zechariah 10:6).
