Genesis 1:5 5. first day—a natural day, as
the mention of its two parts clearly determines; and Moses reckons,
according to Oriental usage, from sunset to sunset, saying not day
and night as we do, but evening and morning.

Exodus 22:28 28. gods—a word which is
several times in this chapter rendered "judges" or
magistrates.
the ruler of thy people—and
the chief magistrate who was also the high priest, at least in the
time of Paul (Acts 23:1-5).
2 Kings 16:5 5. Then Rezin king of Syria and
Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to
Jerusalem—Notwithstanding their great efforts and military
preparations, they failed to take it and, being disappointed, raised
the siege and returned home (compare :-).
Nehemiah 8:5 5. when he opened it, all the people
stood up—This attitude they assumed either from respect to
God's word, or, rather, because the reading was prefaced by a solemn
prayer, which was concluded by a general expression of "Amen,
Amen."
Psalms 1:6 6. knoweth the way—attends to
and provides for them (Psalms 101:6;
Proverbs 12:10; Hosea 13:5).
way of the wicked—All
their plans will end in disappointment and ruin (Psalms 37:13;
Psalms 146:8; Proverbs 4:19).

connection seems to denote God's heavenly residence; the term used is
taken from the place of His visible earthly abode (Psalms 2:6;
Psalms 3:4; Psalms 5:7).
Thence He inspects men with close scrutiny.
Psalms 18:5 5. death—and hell
(compare Psalms 16:10) are
personified as man's great enemies (compare Revelation 20:13;
Revelation 20:14).
prevented—encountered
me, crossed my path, and endangered my safety. He does not mean he
was in their power.
Psalms 39:5 5, 6. His prayer is answered in
his obtaining an impressive view of the vanity of the life of all
men, and their transient state. Their pomp is a mere image, and their
wealth is gathered they know not for whom.
Psalms 43:3 3. light—as in :-.
truth—or,
"faithfulness" (Psalms 25:5),
manifest it by fulfilling promises. Light and truth are
personified as messengers who will bring him to the privileged place
of worship.
tabernacles—plural, in
allusion to the various courts.

prayer in view of malicious and violent foes, and joy in prospect of

characteristic of the reign of Messiah (Isaiah 11:4;
Isaiah 11:5; Psalms 72:2;
Psalms 72:4; Revelation 19:11).
far from oppression,
c.—far from suffering oppression "for thou shall have
nothing to fear."
