Psalms 116:3 3, 4. For similar figures for
distress see Psalms 18:4; Psalms 18:5.
gat hold upon me—Another
sense ("found") of the same word follows, as we speak of
disease finding us, and of our finding or catching disease.
Psalms 127:3 3-5. Posterity is often
represented as a blessing from God (Genesis 30:2;
Genesis 30:18; 1 Samuel 1:19;
1 Samuel 1:20). Children are
represented as the defenders (arrows) of their parents in war, and in
litigation.
Psalms 66:16 16-20. With these he unites his
public thanks, inviting those who fear God (Psalms 60:4;
Psalms 61:5, His true worshippers)
to hear. He vindicates his sincerity, inasmuch as God would not hear
hypocrites, but had heard him.

Psalms 99:3 3. thy . . . name—perfections

Ecclesiastes 10:18 18. building—literally, "the
joining of the rafters," namely, the kingdom (Ecclesiastes 10:16;

droppeth—By neglecting
to repair the roof in time, the rain gets through.
Isaiah 13:5 5. They—namely, "Jehovah,"
and the armies which are "the weapons of His indignation."
far country—Media and
Persia, stretching to the far north and east.

east (Psalms 19:6).
destroy—rather, "to
seize" [HORSLEY].
Isaiah 20:4 4. buttocks uncovered—BELZONI
says that captives are found represented thus on Egyptian monuments
(Isaiah 47:2; Isaiah 47:3;
Nahum 3:5; Nahum 3:8;
Nahum 3:9), where as here, Egypt
and Ethiopia are mentioned as in alliance.
Isaiah 26:14 14. They—The "other
lords" or tyrants ( :-).
shall not live—namely,
again.
deceased—Hebrew,
"Rephaim"; powerless, in the land of shades (Isaiah 14:9;
Isaiah 14:10).
therefore—that is,
inasmuch as. Compare "therefore" (Genesis 18:5;
Genesis 19:8).
Isaiah 29:5 5. Moreover—rather, "Yet";
yet in this extremity help shall come, and the enemy be scattered.
strangers—foreign
enemies, invaders (Isaiah 25:2).
it shall be—namely, the
destruction of the enemy.
at an instant—in a
moment (Isaiah 30:23).
Isaiah 38:7 7. sign—a token that God would
fulfil His promise that Hezekiah should "go up into the house of
the Lord the third day" (2 Kings 20:5;
2 Kings 20:8); the words in italics
are not in Isaiah.
Jeremiah 10:13 13. Literally, "At the
voice of His giving forth," that is, when He thunders. (Job 38:34;
Psalms 29:3-5).
waters— (Psalms 29:3-19.29.5- :) —above the firmament; heavy rains accompany thunder.
vapours . . . ascend—
(Psalms 135:7).
treasures—His stores.
Jeremiah 50:28 28. declare in Zion . . .
temple—Some Jews "fleeing" from Babylon at its fall
shall tell in Judea how God avenged the cause of Zion and her temple
that had been profaned (Jeremiah 52:13;
Daniel 1:2; Daniel 5:2).
Ezekiel 23:47 47. stones—the legal penalty
of the adulteress (Ezekiel 16:40;
Ezekiel 16:41; John 8:5).
Answering to the stones hurled by the Babylonians from engines
in besieging Jerusalem.
houses . . . fire—fulfilled
(2 Chronicles 36:17; 2 Chronicles 36:19).
Ezekiel 3:5 5. See Margin, Hebrew,
"deep of lip, and heavy of tongue," that is, men speaking
an obscure and unintelligible tongue. Even they would have listened
to the prophet; but the Jews, though addressed in their own tongue,
will not hear him.

misery, which sought relief in tears and self-inflicted torture.
Luke 11:5 5-8. at midnight . . . for a friend
is come—The heat in warm countries makes evening preferable
to-day for travelling; but "midnight" is everywhere a most
unseasonable hour of call, and for that very reason it is here
selected.
John 3:18 18. is not condemned—Having,
immediately on his believing, "passed from death unto life"
(John 5:24).
condemned already—Rejecting
the one way of deliverance from that "condemnation" which
God gave His Son to remove, and so wilfully remaining
condemned.
