Genesis 16:5 — 5. And Sarai said . . . My wrong be upon thee—Bursts of temper, or blows, as the original may bear, took place till at length Hagar, perceiving the hopelessness of maintaining the unequal strife, resolved to escape from what had become to her in reality, as well as in name, a house of bondage.
2 Kings 3:5 — 5. king of Moab rebelled—This is a repetition of 2 Kings 1:1, in order to introduce an account of the confederate expedition for crushing this revolt, which had been allowed to continue unchecked during the short reign of Ahaziah. 2 Kings 1:1- :. ELISHA PROMISES WATER AND VICTORY OVER MOAB.
Job 16:10 — 10. gaped—not in order to devour, but to mock him. To fill his cup of misery, the mockery of his friends (Job 16:10) is added to the hostile treatment from God (Job 16:10- :). smitten . . . cheek—figurative for contemptuous abuse (Lamentations 3:30; Matthew 5:39). gathered themselves—"conspired unanimously" [SCHUTTENS].
Job 3:4 — 4. let not God regard it—rather, more poetically, "seek it out." "Let not God stoop from His bright throne to raise it up from its dark hiding-place." The curse on the day in :-, is amplified in Job 3:4; Job 3:5; that on the night, in Job 3:6-10.
Psalms 58:10 — 10, 11. wash . . . wicked—denoting great slaughter. The joy of triumph over the destruction of the wicked is because they are God's enemies, and their overthrow shows that He reigneth (compare Psalms 52:5-7; Psalms 54:7). In this assurance let heaven and earth rejoice (Psalms 96:10; Psalms 97:1, &c.).
Psalms 68:10 — 10. Thy congregation—literally, "troop," as in 2 Samuel 23:11; 2 Samuel 23:13 —the military aspect of the people being prominent, according to the figures of the context. therein—that is, in the land of promise. the poor—Thy humble people (Psalms 68:9; compare Psalms 10:17; Psalms 12:5).
Psalms 70:1-5 — Salmo 70 Este corresponde con el Salmo 40:13, con muy pocas variaciones, como sean vueltos (v. 3) por sean asolados, y apresúrate a mí (v. 5) por pensará de mí. Forma un apéndice propio para el salmo anterior, y se llama “un salmo que hace recordar,” como el Salmo 38.
Psalms 8:1 — 1. thy name—perfections (Psalms 5:11; Psalms 7:17). who hast set—literally, "which set Thou Thy glory," &c., or "which glory of Thine set Thou," &c., that is, make it more conspicuous as if earth were too small a theater for its display. A similar exposition suits the usual rendering.
Numbers 28:16 — 16-25. in the fourteenth day of the first month is the passover—The law for that great annual festival is given (Leviticus 23:5), but some details are here introduced, as certain specified offerings are prescribed to be made on each of the seven days of unleavened bread [Numbers 28:18-25].
Jonah 2:3 — 3. thou hadst cast . . . thy billows . . . thy waves—Jonah recognizes the source whence his sufferings came. It was no mere chance, but the hand of God which sent them. Compare Job's similar recognition of God's hand in calamities, Job 1:21; Job 2:10; and David's, 2 Samuel 16:5-11.
Malachi 1:5 — 5. from the border of Israel—Ye, restored to your own "borders" in Israel, "from" them shall raise your voices to "magnify the Lord," acknowledging that Jehovah has shown to you a gratuitous favor not shown to Edom, and so ought to be especially "magnified from the borders of Israel."
Matthew 15:5 — 5. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift—or simply, "A gift!" In Mark (Mark 7:11), it is, "Corban!" that is, "An oblation!" meaning, any unbloody offering or gift dedicated to sacred uses. by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;
Matthew 4:12 — 12. Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison—more simply, "was delivered up," as recorded in Matthew 14:3-5; Mark 6:17-20; Luke 3:19; Luke 3:20. he departed—rather, "withdrew." into Galilee—as recorded, in its proper place, in Luke 3:20- :.
Luke 24:5 — 5. Why, c.—Astonishing question! not "the risen," but "the Living One" (compare Revelation 1:18) and the surprise expressed in it implies an incongruity in His being there at all, as if, though He might submit to it, "it was impossible He should be holden of it" (Revelation 1:18- :).
Romans 10:5 — 5-10. For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man that doeth—"hath done" those things—which it commands. shall live in them— ( :-). This is the one way of justification and life—by "the righteousness which is of (or, by our own obedience to) the law."
Romans 4:18 — 18-22. Who against hope—when no ground for hope appeared. believed in hope—that is, cherished the believing expectation. that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be—that is, Such "as the stars of heaven," Genesis 15:5.
2 Corinthians 11:30 — 30. glory of . . . infirmities—A striking contrast! Glorying or boasting of what others make matter of shame, namely, infirmities; for instance, his humbling mode of escape in a basket ( :-). A character utterly incompatible with that of an enthusiast (compare 2 Corinthians 12:5; 2 Corinthians 12:9; 2 Corinthians 12:10).
2 Corinthians 9:5 — 5. that they would go before—Translate, "that they should," c. whereof ye had notice before—rather, "promised before" "long announced by me to the Macedonians" ( :-) [BENGEL]. "Your promised bounty" [ELLICOTT and others]. not as of covetousness—Translate, "not as matter of covetousness," which it would be, if you gave niggardly.
Galatians 5 overview — CHAPTER 5 :-. PERORATION. EXHORTATION TO STAND FAST IN THE GOSPEL LIBERTY, JUST SET FORTH, AND NOT TO BE LED BY JUDAIZERS INTO CIRCUMCISION, OR LAW JUSTIFICATION: YET THOUGH FREE, TO SERVE ONE ANOTHER BY LOVE: TO WALK IN THE SPIRIT, BEARING THE FRUIT THEREOF, NOT IN THE WORKS OF THE FLESH.
Judges 3:5 — 5-7. the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites—The two peoples by degrees came to be on habits of intercourse. Reciprocal alliances were formed by marriage till the Israelites, relaxing the austerity of their principles, showed a growing conformity to the manners and worship of their idolatrous neighbors. :-.
