Genesis 16:5 5. And Sarai said . . . My wrong be
upon thee—Bursts of temper, or blows, as the original may bear,
took place till at length Hagar, perceiving the hopelessness of
maintaining the unequal strife, resolved to escape from what had
become to her in reality, as well as in name, a house of bondage.
2 Kings 3:5 5. king of Moab rebelled—This
is a repetition of 2 Kings 1:1, in
order to introduce an account of the confederate expedition for
crushing this revolt, which had been allowed to continue unchecked
during the short reign of Ahaziah.
2 Kings 1:1- :. ELISHA
PROMISES WATER
AND VICTORY OVER
MOAB.
Job 16:10 10. gaped—not in order to
devour, but to mock him. To fill his cup of misery, the mockery of
his friends (Job 16:10) is
added to the hostile treatment from God (Job 16:10- :).
smitten . . .
cheek—figurative for contemptuous abuse (Lamentations 3:30;
Matthew 5:39).
gathered
themselves—"conspired unanimously" [SCHUTTENS].
Job 3:4 4. let not God regard it—rather,
more poetically, "seek it out." "Let not God stoop
from His bright throne to raise it up from its dark hiding-place."
The curse on the day in :-, is amplified in Job 3:4;
Job 3:5; that on the night,
in Job 3:6-10.
Psalms 58:10 10, 11. wash . . . wicked—denoting
great slaughter. The joy of triumph over the destruction of the
wicked is because they are God's enemies, and their overthrow shows
that He reigneth (compare Psalms 52:5-7;
Psalms 54:7). In this assurance let
heaven and earth rejoice (Psalms 96:10;
Psalms 97:1, &c.).
Psalms 68:10 10. Thy congregation—literally,
"troop," as in 2 Samuel 23:11;
2 Samuel 23:13 —the military aspect
of the people being prominent, according to the figures of the
context.
therein—that is, in the
land of promise.
the poor—Thy humble
people (Psalms 68:9; compare
Psalms 10:17; Psalms 12:5).
Psalms 70:1-5 Salmo 70
Psalms 8:1 1. thy name—perfections
(Psalms 5:11; Psalms 7:17).
who hast set—literally,
"which set Thou Thy glory," &c., or "which glory
of Thine set Thou," &c., that is, make it more conspicuous
as if earth were too small a theater for its display. A similar
exposition suits the usual rendering.
Numbers 28:16 16-25. in the fourteenth day of the
first month is the passover—The law for that great annual
festival is given (Leviticus 23:5), but
some details are here introduced, as certain specified offerings are
prescribed to be made on each of the seven days of unleavened bread
[Numbers 28:18-25].
Jonah 2:3 3. thou hadst cast . . . thy billows
. . . thy waves—Jonah recognizes the source whence his
sufferings came. It was no mere chance, but the hand of God
which sent them. Compare Job's similar recognition of God's hand in
calamities, Job 1:21; Job 2:10;
and David's, 2 Samuel 16:5-11.
Malachi 1:5 5. from the border of Israel—Ye,
restored to your own "borders" in Israel, "from"
them shall raise your voices to "magnify the Lord,"
acknowledging that Jehovah has shown to you a gratuitous favor not
shown to Edom, and so ought to be especially "magnified from the
borders of Israel."
Matthew 15:5 5. But ye say, Whosoever shall say
to his father or his mother, It is a gift—or simply, "A
gift!" In Mark (Mark 7:11),
it is, "Corban!" that is, "An oblation!"
meaning, any unbloody offering or gift dedicated to sacred uses.
by whatsoever thou mightest
be profited by me;
Matthew 4:12 12. Now when Jesus had heard that
John was cast into prison—more simply, "was delivered up,"
as recorded in Matthew 14:3-5;
Mark 6:17-20; Luke 3:19;
Luke 3:20.
he departed—rather,
"withdrew."
into Galilee—as
recorded, in its proper place, in Luke 3:20- :.
Luke 24:5 5. Why, c.—Astonishing
question! not "the risen," but "the Living
One" (compare Revelation 1:18)
and the surprise expressed in it implies an incongruity in His
being there at all, as if, though He might submit to it, "it
was impossible He should be holden of it" (Revelation 1:18- :).
Romans 10:5 5-10. For Moses describeth the
righteousness which is of the law, That the man that doeth—"hath
done"
those things—which it
commands.
shall live in them— ( :-). This is the one way of justification and life—by "the
righteousness which is of (or, by our own obedience to) the law."
Romans 4:18 18-22. Who against hope—when
no ground for hope appeared.
believed in hope—that
is, cherished the believing expectation.
that he might become the
father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall
thy seed be—that is, Such "as the stars of heaven,"
Genesis 15:5.
2 Corinthians 11:30 30. glory of . . . infirmities—A
striking contrast! Glorying or boasting of what others
make matter of shame, namely, infirmities; for instance, his
humbling mode of escape in a basket ( :-). A character utterly incompatible with that of an
enthusiast (compare 2 Corinthians 12:5;
2 Corinthians 12:9; 2 Corinthians 12:10).
2 Corinthians 9:5 5. that they would go
before—Translate, "that they should," c.
whereof ye had notice
before—rather, "promised before" "long announced
by me to the Macedonians" ( :-) [BENGEL]. "Your
promised bounty" [ELLICOTT
and others].
not as of
covetousness—Translate, "not as matter of covetousness,"
which it would be, if you gave niggardly.

Judges 3:5 5-7. the children of Israel dwelt
among the Canaanites—The two peoples by degrees came to be on
habits of intercourse. Reciprocal alliances were formed by marriage
till the Israelites, relaxing the austerity of their principles,
showed a growing conformity to the manners and worship of their
idolatrous neighbors.
