From Heshbon even unto Elealeh. — See Isaiah 15:4-5 ; Isaiah 15:9 .
As a heifer of three years old. — Which at that age beginneth to low after the bull.

Ezekiel 8:18
Therefore will I also deal in fury: mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: and though they cry in mine ears with a loud voice, [yet] will I not hear them.
Mine eye shall not spare. — Ezekiel 5:11 ; Ezekiel 7:4 .
And though they cry in mine ears, … — Because it is the cry of the flesh for ease, and not of the spirit for grace.
Daniel 4:26
And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree roots; thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule.
And whereas they commanded. — See Daniel 4:15 ; and further observe how God tempereth his judgments with mercy, and that out of his mere philanthropy.

And if this come to the governor’s ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.
We will persuade him and secure you — Hypocrites have enough, if they can collogue with men, and escape the lash of the law. "God is not in all their thoughts," Psalms 10:4 , or they think they can persuade him and secure themselves. Hence that overflow of sin, through hope of impunity, and abundance of atheism.

And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.
His fame spread — Those that do worthily in Ephratah shall be famous in Bethlehem, Ruth 4:11 . Cicero worthily preferreth Cato before Socrates, quoniam huius dicta, illius facta laudantur. because in saying these things, he is praised in doing those things. But our Lord Christ was mighty both "in deed and word," Luke 24:19 .

The fever left her — For Christ (the great Centurion that hath the command of all diseases, Matthew 8:9 ) had rebuked it, Luke 4:39 , as once he did the Red Sea, Psalms 106:9 , which therefore fled,Psalms 114:3; Psalms 114:3 .

To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
That sit in darkness — This imports, 1. continuance; 2. content.
To guide our feet — The superstitious pagans thought that their goddess Vibilia kept them in their right way when they travelled: but we have a better guide to God. Arnob. advers. Gent. lib, 4.
Luke 3:2
Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
Annas and Caiaphas being high priests — By turns, John 11:49 ; Acts 4:6 , contrary to the old order. Throughout the whole Turkish territories, there is but one Mufta, or high priest, and he is the supreme judge and rectifier of all actions, as well civil as ecclesiastical.
John 6:36
But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.
Ye have seen me — But not savingly. Your understandings have been gilded over with a common kind of supernatural light, Hebrews 6:4 , but not to a transmentation. Acts 16:14

Whose heart the Lord opened — Man’s heart is naturally locked up and barricaded against God, till he, by his mighty Spirit, make forcible entrance, beating the devil out of his trenches, 2 Corinthians 10:4 .
