Ver. 4. Y Faraón no escuchará.
Jeremiah 27:5
I have made the earth, the man and the beast that [are] upon the ground, by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto me.
I have made the earth. — And I am therefore the great proprietary and Lord paramount of all, to transfer kingdoms at my pleasure. This Nebuchadnczzar, after seven years’ apprenticeship served among the beasts of the field, had learned to acknowledge. Daniel 4:23-25
Jeremiah 34:3
And thou shalt not escape out of his hand, but shalt surely be taken, and delivered into his hand; and thine eyes shall behold the eyes of the king of Babylon, and he shall speak with thee mouth to mouth, and thou shalt go to Babylon.
And thou shalt not escape. — Whatever vain hopes thou mayest nourish, and although thou thinkest thou hast a stake in store, howsoever the world goes with the rest. See Jeremiah 32:4-5 .
Jeremiah 39:2
[And] in the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, the ninth [day] of the month, the city was broken up.
And in the eleventh year. — See on 2 Kings 25:2 . The sacking of Jerusalem occured four hundred and nineteen years after the building of the temple, (1004 to 588 BC) in the forty-seventh Olympiad, and when Tarquinius Priseus was king of Rome.
The city was broken up. — See on 2 Kings 25:4 .
Jeremiah 4:11
At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A dry wind of the high places in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to fan, nor to cleanse,
A dry wind of the high places. — Ventus urens et exsiccans, as the north wind is. Understand hereby the King of Babylon, as Jeremiah 4:6 blasting and wasting all before him.
Not to fan, nor to cleanse. — But to dissipate and destroy.
Jeremiah 51:1
Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and against them that dwell in the midst of them that rise up against me, a destroying wind;
Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and against them that dwell in the midst, — scil., Of the land of Chaldea, in the royal seat and centre of that great monarchy.
A destroying wind. — Ventum pestilentem. - Vulg, υβριστας . - Septuag. Blasting and boisterous. See Jeremiah 4:11-12 .
Ezekiel 12:4
Then shalt thou bring forth thy stuff by day in their sight, as stuff for removing: and thou shalt go forth at even in their sight, as they that go forth into captivity.
Thou shalt bring forth thy stuff. — Arma viatoria; travelling bags for an ocular demonstration. What surer than sight?
Go forth at even. — The king and his men of war were glad to do so, 2 Kings 25:4 but it would not do.
Ezekiel 16:25
Thou hast built thy high place at every head of the way, and hast made thy beauty to be abhorred, and hast opened thy feet to every one that passed by, and multiplied thy whoredoms.
And hast made thy beauty to be abhorred. — By being made so cheap and common. Sin is a reproach to any people, Proverbs 14:34 idolatry especially. 1 Peter 4:3
And hast opened thy feet. — See on Ezekiel 16:15 .
Ezekiel 21:12
Cry and howl, son of man: for it shall be upon my people, it [shall be] upon all the princes of Israel: terrors by reason of the sword shall be upon my people: smite therefore upon [thy] thigh.
Cry and howl, son of man. — While others make mirth, as Ezekiel 21:10 and are insolent against God. Mourners shall be marked, Ezekiel 9:4 comforted. Isaiah 57:18
Smite therefore upon thy thigh. — See on Jeremiah 31:19 .
Ezekiel 3:19
Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.
He shall die in his iniquity. — Because now he falleth with open eyes. Many sorrows shall be to such wicked as will not be warned. Psalms 32:9-10 De Temp., 99.
But thou hast delivered thy soul, — scil., From thine other men’s sin. 1 Timothy 4:16
Ezekiel 36:12
Yea, I will cause men to walk upon you, [even] my people Israel; and they shall possess thee, and thou shalt be their inheritance, and thou shalt no more henceforth bereave them [of men].
Thou shalt be their inheritance. — Yea, a type and pledge of that heavenly inheritance. 1 Peter 1:4 Revelation 21:1-10 ; Revelation 21:22-27 ; Revelation 22:1-5
And thou shalt no more henceforth bereave them. — Provoke God to bereave them.
Ezekiel 39:4
Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that [is] with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and [to] the beasts of the field to be devoured.
Thou shalt fall upon, the mountains of Israel. — Thither thou shalt come indeed, as Antiochus did into the temple, antichrist into the Church of God, 2 Thessalonians 2:4 but there thou shalt take thy end.
Daniel 5:21
And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling [was] with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and [that] he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.
And he was driven. — See on Daniel 4:22 . Lege historiam, ne fias historia.
Luke 21:36
Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
That ye may be accounted worthy — Great is the emphasis of this word, καταξιωθητε (saith learned Beza), for it gives us to understand that we owe all to the free election of God, who loved us first, and so accepted us for worthy, Revelation 3:4 .
John 2:20
Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
Forty and six years — All, save what lacks; for it was six years’ work only, but they reckon the interim of interruption, Ezra 3:1-13 ; Ezra 4:1-24 ; Ezra 5:1-17 ; Ezra 6:1-22 ; Ezra 7:1-28 , to aggravate the matter. So they are not only blinded, but hardened.
John 9:26
Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?
What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes? — How fain would envy here have fastened her fangs, and have found somewhat to say, whereby to cast a slur on the miracle. They are even question sick, as those 1 Timothy 6:4 . Et si non aliqua nocuissent, … They feed upon their own hearts, because they cannot come at Christ’s.
Acts 1:23
And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
Joseph called Barsabas — The centurists think that this Joseph Barsabas was the same with that Joses called Barnabas afterwards by the apostles, Acts 4:36 . This Joseph, seeing it was God’s mind not to make choice of him now to succeed Judas in the apostleship, was content with a lower condition; therefore afterwards God called him to that high and honourable office of an apostle.
Acts 13:47
For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying , I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.
I have set thee — This, spoken at first to Christ, is here applied to his messengers and ministers, who are labourers together with Christ, 1 Corinthians 3:9 , and are in Scripture called both lights and saviours, Matthew 5:14 ; Obadiah 1:21 1 Timothy 4:16 .
Acts 16:9
And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.
Into Macedonia and help us — The ministers are those by whom God helpeth his perishing people, and pulleth them out of the devil’s danger. Hence they are called saviours, Obadiah 1:21 1 Timothy 4:16 ; redeemers, Job 33:24 ; Job 33:28 ; co-workers with Christ, 2 Corinthians 6:1 .
