Genesis 28:19 — And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city [was called] Luz at the first. Bethel, — i.e., The house of God; yet afterwards for the calf worshlp there set up by Jeroboam, it became Bethaven. Hosea 4:15 See the note there. God grant that Anglia , once called Regnum Dei , never become Thronus Satanae , the place "where Satan’s seat is". Revelation 2:13 And let all true hearted Englishmen with one mind and one mouth say, Amen and Amen.

Exodus 5:4 — And the king of Egypt said unto them, Wherefore do ye, Moses and Aaron, let the people from their works? get you unto your burdens. Ver 4. Let the people from their works. — Moses talks of sacrifice; Pharaoh of work. Anything seems due work to a carnal mind, saving God’s service; nothing superfluous but religious duties. Aug., De Civit. Dei. Seneca saith the Jews cast away a seventh part of their time upon a weekly Sabbath. "To what end is this loss?" said Judas.

Exodus 5:8 — And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish [ought] thereof: for they [be] idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go [and] sacrifice to our God. For they be idle. — I heard a great man once say, saith Luther, Necesse est otiosos esse homilies qui ista negotia religionis curant. They must needs be idle fellows that are so much taken up about the business of religion. See Trapp on " Exodus 5:4 "

1 Kings 18:33 — And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid [him] on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour [it] on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood. Fill four barrels with water. — Which was got out of the sea, likely, which was nigh to mount Carmel, Jeremiah 4:18 in this wonderful drought, whereby the brooks were dried up. This was done that the miracle might be the more manifest, and beyond all exception.

Numbers 10:35 — And it came to pass, when the ark set forward, that Moses said, Rise up, LORD, and let thine enemies be scattered; and let them that hate thee flee before thee. Rise up, Lord. — Commanders must pray, as well as lead on their forces, as did Charles the Great, and that late brave King of Sweden, more addict to prayer than to fight. Flee before thee. — Heb., Before thy face. The ark is called God’s face. Psalms 105:4 Yea, even God himself. Psalms 132:5

Numbers 14:15 — Now [if] thou shalt kill [all] this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying, Kill all this people as one man. — As he can quickly do, with a turn of his hand, with a nod of his head, Psalms 80:16 with a breath of his nostrils. Job 4:9 He can as soon do it, as bid it be done, "whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only." Job 34:29

Numbers 25:9 — twenty and four thousand. Twenty and four thousand. — Twenty and three thousand, saith St Paul, 1 Corinthians 10:8 insisting only in the special punishment of the people, who were provoked to sin by that other thousand, their princes, Numbers 25:4 and all to show, quam frigida et ieiuna sit eorum defensio, …, saith Junius, Jun., Parallel. how poorly they plead for themselves, that think to excuse their sins by alleging the examples of their superiors.

Acts 18:6 — Αντιτασσομενων , And when they bade him battle. A military term. Your blood be upon your own heads — Answerable to their wish, Matthew 27:25 , and according to their manner of putting their sins upon the head of the sacrificed creature, Leviticus 1:4 ; Leviticus 3:2 .

Acts 19:5 — When they heard this , they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. They were baptized — That is, say some, they were re-baptized, because baptized before in a wrong name. Therefore Paul first catechiseth them, Acts 19:4 . Others say that it was rather their renewing to their baptism than their baptism to them; and not that they took any other than that of John, but that they now began to entertain and apply it to the right intent. Galatians 4:2 — Αισωπον πεπατηκως . Aristophanes. The sea about the altar was brazen,1 Kings 7:23; 1 Kings 7:23 , and what eyes could pierce through it? Now our sea about the throne is glassy, Revelation 4:6 , like to crystal, clearly conveying the light and sight of God to our eyes.

1 Thessalonians 5:4 — But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Should overtake you as a thief — Though it come upon you as a thief in a time uncertain. Free you are from the destruction of that day, though not altogether free from the distraction of it, till somewhat recollected you remember that now your redemption draweth nigh. Hence the saints love Christ’s appearing, 2 Timothy 4:8 ; look for it with outstretched necks, and long after it, Revelation 22:20 .

Judges 1:15 — down, to leave them excuseless, speechless, self-condemned, ελεγξαι . Of all their hard speeches — Their rude, crude, crooked, cross speeches, uttered with perverse lips; so Solomon calls them, Proverbs 4:24 , as if the upper lip stood where the nether lip should.

Judges 6:20 — And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay [them] upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so. And lay them upon this rock. — Christ is called the Rock, 1 Corinthians 10:4 and that is a good rule given by the apostle in Colossians 3:17 , - "Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him."

Jude 1:15 — him. To convince all — To set them down, to leave them excuseless, speechless, self-condemned, elegxai. Of all their hard speeches — Their rude, crude, crooked, cross speeches, uttered with perverse lips; so Solomon calls them, Proverbs 4:24, as if the upper lip stood where the nether lip should.
