Jeremiah 32:17 thee:
Ah Lord God! — This interjection in the beginning of his prayer showeth that his heart was greatly grieved and perplexed. Nevertheless he reineth in his passions, and runneth not out into a brawl instead of a prayer, as Jonah did. Jonah 4:1 See Trapp on " Jonah 4:1 "
Thou hast made the heaven and earth by thy great power. — God’s might and mercy are the good soul’s Joachin and Boaz, whereon it ever resteth. These two doth Jeremiah in this prayer of his chiefly
Ezekiel 1:6 did comprehend in themselves all the elements and all the parts of the world; not as if they did move or act by their own power, but as they are God’s hands and agents, employed by him at pleasure, for the good of his Church especially, Hebrews 1:14 as being fit and ready to every good work. So should we strive to be. Titus 3:1
And every one had four wings. — To set forth their agility, their incredible swiftness, far beyond that of the sun, which yet, if Bellarmine De Ascens. ment. in
Ezekiel 24:2 the day, [even] of this same day: the king of Babylon set himself against Jerusalem this same day.
This same day. — Ezekiel in Mesopotamia is told by God, and telleth others the very day that Nebuchadnezzar laid siege to Jerusalem. 2 Kings 25:1 Jeremiah 39:1 ; Jeremiah 52:4 Heathen historians all us of Apollonius Tyanaeus, that in the self-same day and hour wherein Domitian the emperor was slain at Rome, he got up into a high place at Ephesus in Asia, and calling together a great multitude
Ezekiel 35:5 mischief.
In the time that their iniquity had an end. — When I had in a manner done with them, yet thou hadst not done with them; but didst stir up Nebuzaradan to burn the city and temple with fire. This was to help forward the affliction. Zechariah 1:15 See Trapp on " Zechariah 1:15 "
Ezekiel 43:7 whoredom, nor by the carcases of their kings in their high places.
The place of my throne, and the place of the soles of my feet, — i.e., My Church, which is unto me instead of heaven and earth. Behold the place of my throne, …, Isaiah 60:1 so some read it; others, As for the place of my throne, …
No more defile. — But hallow; for negative holiness alone is little worth.
Nor by the carcases of their kings, — i.e., Their idols; Piscat. not unfitly called "carcases":
Ezekiel 45:10
Ye shall have just balances, and a just ephah, and a just bath.
Ye shall have just balances. — Leviticus 19:35-36 Proverbs 11:1 ; Proverbs 16:11 ; Proverbs 20:10 ; Proverbs 20:23 Micah 6:10-11 ; See Trapp on " Leviticus 19:35 " See Trapp on " Leviticus 19:36 " See Trapp on " Proverbs 11:1 " See Trapp on " Proverbs 16:11
Ezekiel 5:7 from foreign princes whom they had sworn to serve.
Neither have done according to the judgment of the nations. — But have outsinned them, qui deos suos quamvis viles et multos non mutant, who change not their gods (as you have done me, Jeremiah 2:10-11 ), but follow the natural light of reason (some of them at least do so, Romans 2:14 ), which you have debauched. See 1 Corinthians 5:1 Ezekiel 16:46-48 .
Ezekiel 7:4
And mine eye shall not spare thee, neither will I have pity: but I will recompense thy ways upon thee, and thine abominations shall be in the midst of thee: and ye shall know that I [am] the LORD.
And mine eye shall not spare thee. — Ezekiel 5:11 . See on Jeremiah 13:14 .
And thine abominations shall be in the midst of thee. — Ut quae antea latuerant, in aperture prodeant.
And ye shall know that I am the Lord. — That smiteth you. Ezekiel 7:9
An evil, an only evil, — viz.,
Daniel 10:12 Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words.
Fear not, Daniel. — Disquieting and expectorating fears should be laid aside. 1 John 4:18
For from the first day. — See on Daniel 9:23 . Let us but find a praying heart, and God will presently find a pitying heart, though he may delay for a season to send in an answer. Though Daniel heard nothing of his prayers for three
Daniel 8:14 wonderful numberer Christ, who hath all secrets in numerato, and will put a timely period to his people’s afflictions. Not full seven years did they suffer here, much less seventy, as once in Babylon. How he moderateth the matter., see on Revelation 2:10 ; how this prophecy was fulfilled, see Malachi 1:12-14; Malachi 1:12-14 2 Maccabees 4:12-16 cf. 1Ma 4:52-45 .
Zechariah 8:22 Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD.
Yea, many people and strong nations, … — The most populous and potent people subdued by Christ (not by any army, nor by power, but by God’s Spirit of power, of love, and of a sound mind, 2 Timothy 1:7 ), shall send a lamb to the Lord of the whole earth, submit to the sceptre and laws of Christ’s kingdom, yield the obedience of faith, and be proselyted to the Church, Isaiah 16:1 .
And to pray before the Lord — Heb. To entreat his face,
Matthew 15:34 little fishes.
Seven, and a few little fishes — Before, he had fed five thousand with fewer loaves. God can as easily maintain us with a little as with more; witness Daniel’s pulse, and Elijah’s cake on the coals and cruse of water,1 Kings 19:6; 1 Kings 19:6 ; Luther’s herring, and Junius’s one egg a day, when means were short with him, by reason of the civil wars in France, so that he could not hear from his friends. It is not by bread only that man liveth, but by the
Matthew 15:36 peremptory Thomas, John 20:27 .
And the disciples to the multitude — This is Christ’s course to this day; by the hands of his faithful ministers to deal forth his favours, to give his Holy Spirit, which is, to give all good things,Matthew 7:11; Matthew 7:11 ; cf. Luke 11:13 , by the preaching of faith. This manna comes down from heaven in the dews of the ministry, Numbers 11:9 ; 1 Peter 1:22 . If our eyes see not our teachers, we cannot expect to hear the voice behind us, Isaiah 30:20 .
Matthew 24:43 souls? what are these earthly tabernacles, those clayey cottages, to our houses from heaven? All things here are temporial and abject, nec vera, nec vestra, neither true nor yours, subject to vanity and violence. Heaven only hath a foundation, Hebrews 11:10 . Earth hath none, Job 26:7 . And things are said to be in heaven, but on earth, as ready with the least shake to fall off,Colossians 1:20; Colossians 1:20 . There is nothing of any stability or solid consistency in the creature. It is but a surface,
Matthew 8:10 said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
He marvelled, and said, … — What can be so great a marvel as that Christ marvelleth? So he wondered at his own work in Nathanael, John 1:47 , and at his own love to miserable mankind, when he calls himself "Wonderful, Counsellor," …,Isaiah 9:6; Isaiah 9:6 . He wondereth not, as the disciples did, at the magnificence of the temple; he was not a whit taken with all the
Luke 23:51
(The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.
The same had not consented — This proved him to be a good man and a just, as Psalms 1:1 . Sir John Cheek was drawn in for fear of death to be present at the condemnation of some of the martyrs. The remorse whereof so mightily wrought upon his heart, that not long after he left this mortal life; whose fall, though it was full of infirmity,
John 1:31 or compact beforehand between them. Nor did John ever know Christ so fully till now: his former knowledge was but ignorance, in comparison; none are too good to learn. The very angels know not so much of Christ, but they would know more, Ephesians 3:10 , and therefore look intently into the mystery of Christ, as the cherubims did into the ark, 1 Peter 1:12 .
But that he should be manifested — Ministers must hold up the tapestry, as it were, and show men Christ. They are the mouth of the Holy
John 10:29
My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.
No man is able to pluck them — Impostors seek to thrust us from God, Deuteronomy 13:5 , and to drag disciples after them, with such violence, as if they would pluck them limb meal (as the word αποσπαν signifies, Acts 20:30 ), so to deceive, if it were possible, the very elect, Matthew 24:24 . A thing
John 14:21 in media luce. No indeed, openly and is the midst of light, Beza. This is, saith Agur, "to ascend into heaven," Proverbs 30:3-4 . This is, saith our Saviour elsewhere, the great talent of all others. There is a "much" in it, Luke 12:48 . This is, saith St Paul, the Christian’s riches, 1 Corinthians 1:5 ; and David reckons of his wealth by it, Psalms 119:32 .
John 7:8 great fault in Eli’s time, that men "abhorred the offering of the Lord," though the sin of the priests was very great before the Lord, and all was out of order; yet in abhorring the sacrifice, they "transgressed, even to a cry,"1 Samuel 2:17; 1 Samuel 2:17 .
