2 Kings 18:6
For he clave to the LORD, [and] departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.
For he clave to the Lord. — Indivulse: and this he knew to be his duty, from Deuteronomy 4:4 ; Deuteronomy 10:20 ; Joshua 23:8 , sc., to embrace the Lord with faith and love: to adhere unto him as his head and husband, with all his heart and soul. He "departed not from following him," as it is here expounded, "but kept his
2 Kings 19:22 [thy] voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? [even] against the Holy [One] of Israel.
Against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? — God is "jealous for Jerusalem with a great jealousy." Zechariah 1:14 He soon took notice of Cain’s frowns; Genesis 4:6 Laban’s lowerings; Genesis 31:2 Rabshakeh’s outcries here; those miscreants lolling out the tongue; Isaiah 57:3-4 their wagging the head at Christ on the cross. Matthew 27:39
2 Kings 19:22 ¿A quién has reprochado y blasfemado?
Mateo 27:39
Ezra 5:10
We asked their names also, to certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that [were] the chief of them.
We asked their names also — See Ezra 5:4 .
That were the chief of them — For the rude multitude follow as they are led. And as in a beast, the whole body goeth after the head, so do most people after their rulers and ringleaders; hence that severity of God, Numbers 25:4 , "Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the Lord against the sun."
Psalms 112:2 be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.
And his seed shall be mighty upon earth — As Abraham’s was, and, besides, the reward of his humility and fear of the Lord was riches and honour, and life, Proverbs 22:4 . For godliness is profitable to all things, having the promises of this life, and of that to come, 1 Timothy 4:8 , as in this psalm is fully set forth.
The generation of the upright, … — Personal goodness is profitable to posterity; and
Psalms 119:115 me, ye evildoers: for I will keep the commandments of my God.
Depart from me, ye evildoers — For what reason? there is no doing my duty in your company; besides, a double danger: 1. Infection of sin; 2. Infliction of punishment, Revelation 18:4 .
For I will keep the commandments — Which it booteth me not to set about unless I do first abandon your society, hating the garment spotted by the flesh, that is, avoiding evil company (saith Mr Perkins), that remora or pest of true piety. See
Sal 74:16
Isaiah 14:30 shall; who though never so poor - as they were at a very low ebb under Ahaz - were God’s "firstborn," and, in that respect, "higher than the kings of the earth." Psalms 89:27
And I will kill thy root. — See Zephaniah 2:4 . See Trapp on " Zephaniah 2:4 "
Isaiah 60:1 both thy countenance and condition; Tanquam libera ac laeta ad novum nuncium; up, and look up, I have joyful tidings for thee.
For thy light is come. — Christ, who is αυτοφως - light essential. John 12:46
And, the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. — The glorious gospel of grace. 2 Corinthians 3:7 ; 2 Corinthians 4:4
Daniel 4:32
And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling [shall be] with the beasts of the field: they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.
And they shall drive thee. — See on Daniel 4:25 , See Trapp on " Daniel 4:25 " that new impieties work out old threatened curses, which seldom rot in the air, as we use to say of winter.
Matthew 22:9
Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.
Go ye therefore to the highways — Those sinners of the Gentiles, Galatians 2:15 , who wandered in their own ways, Acts 14:16 , and were, till now, without God in the world,Ephesians 4:18; Ephesians 4:18 . These are those other husbandmen, to whom the householder would let out his vineyard, Matthew 21:41-43 , which truth to illustrate, this parable is purposely uttered,
Matthew 23:26 Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
Cleanse first that which is within — God loveth truth in the inwards, Psalms 51:6 ; "O Jerusalem, wash thy heart," Jeremiah 4:14 ; (not thy hands only, as Pilate did); this breeds constancy and evenness in all our outward behaviours, James 4:8 . Grace and nature both begin at the heart, at the centre, and from thence goes to the circumference. Art and hypocrisy begin with
Matthew 25:15
And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.
According to his several ability — Usurers use not to lend to those that cannot give pledge or security. Howbeit, we have nothing of our own, but according to the measure of our gifts and faith,Ephesians 4:13; Ephesians 4:13 , the measure of the rule distributed to us, 2 Corinthians 10:13 , the measure of grace concredited, Romans 12:6 .
John 12:17
The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.
When he called Lazarus, … — This notable miracle, the evangelist, as he had punctually described it, John 11:41-44 , so he cannot but again and again recite it. We should set forth God’s noble acts, and not be sated. David never tires talking of what God had done for his soul. Those in heaven have no rest (and yet no unrest either) crying, "Holy,
Acts 7:46
Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.
Who found favour — This he made more account of than of his crown and sceptre, Psalms 4:6 . Like as when he gave Ziba the lands of Mephibosheth, Ziba begged a further and better boon; "I humbly beseech thee that I may find grace in thy sight, my lord, O king," 2 Samuel 16:4 . What is air without light? or daily bread without pardon of sin? God’s favour sugars all comforts.
The saints are "for signs and for wonders in Israel"; Isaiah 8:18 their rations also - because they keep a constant counter notion to the corrupt customs of others - seem strange and unreasonable, 1 Peter 4:4 though they need not.
