Exodus 2:4 — And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him. And his sister. — By a singular instinct of the Holy Spirit, as appears by the event. "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord." Psalms 37:23 "He keepeth the feet of his saints." 1 Samuel 2:9

Exodus 5:20 — And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh: And they met Moses. — How ready are we to mistake the grounds of our afflictions, and to cast them upon false causes! The Sareptan told the prophet that he had killed her son. 1 Kings 17:18

1 Kings 14:27 — And king Rehoboam made in their stead brasen shields, and committed [them] unto the hands of the chief of the guard, which kept the door of the king’s house. Brazen shields. — "The faithful city" was now "become a harlot"; no wonder therefore that her "silver was become dross," Isaiah 1:21-22 her gold brass.

1 Kings 22:38 — And [one] washed the chariot in the pool of Samaria; and the dogs licked up his blood; and they washed his armour; according unto the word of the LORD which he spake. In the pool of Samaria. — So the pool in Jezreel might be called, for the reason above given, on 1 Kings 21:19 .

2 Kings 14:2 — He was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name [was] Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jehoaddan. — The mothers of the kings of Judah are expressed by name; not so of Israel. See on 1 Kings 15:10 .

Leviticus 12:5 — But if she bear a maid child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her separation: and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying threescore and six days. But if she bear a maid child. — To intimate, it may be, the woman’s being first in the transgression. 1 Timothy 2:14

Numbers 31:2 — Avenge the children of Israel of the Midianites: afterward shalt thou be gathered unto thy people. Avenge the children of Israel. — This is called the vengeance of Jehovah. Numbers 31:3 The righteous Judge will not fail to avenge our unrighteous vexations, if we "commit ourselves to him in well doing." 1 Peter 4:19

Deuteronomy 28:33 — The fruit of thy land, and all thy labours, shall a nation which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt be only oppressed and crushed alway: The fruit of thy land, … — So Ezekiel 25:4 . They shall eat thy fruit, and they shall drink thy milk. See Jeremiah 5:17 ; Jeremiah 1:7 .

Romans 11:28 — As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes. They are enemies — i.e. Hated of God, as appears by the opposition; and banished, as it were, by a common consent of nations, out of human society. See 1 Thessalonians 2:15-16 .

Romans 9:26 — And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God. The children, … — This is such a royalty, John 1:12 , as the apostle worthily wondereth at, and sets an Ecce Behold, upon it.

Galatians 4:10 — Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. Ye observe days — The Christian Church knows no holy days, besides that honourable Lord’s day, Isaiah 57:14 ; Revelation 1:10 , and such holy feasts, as upon special occasions the Church shall see fit to celebrate, as Novemb. 5, … (Guy Fawkes Day and the gunpowder plot)

Ephesians 2:20 — And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone ; Upon the foundation — Foundation is taken either for Christ, 1 Corinthians 3:11 ; Matthew 16:16 , or the doctrine of the Scriptures which teach salvation only by Jesus Christ, as here and Revelation 21:14 .

Joshua 10:33 — Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining. 1 Thessalonians 5:20 — Despise not prophesyings. Despise not — i.e. Highly honour, and preciously esteem, as an honorary given by Christ to his Church at his wonderful ascension, Psalms 51:17 ; Ephesians 4:8 ; Ephesians 4:11 . Prophesying — That is, preaching, 1 Corinthians 14:3 , so called because they took their texts out of some of the prophets.

Judges 10:5 — And Jair died, and was buried in Camon. And Jair died. — "It, is appointed for all men once to die, and after death judgment." Judges shall once say, - "Do ye then speak righteousness? do ye judge uprightly, O ye sons of men?" Psalms 58:1 "Behold, the Judge standeth before the door." James 5:9

Judges 4:13 — And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, [even] nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people that [were] with him, from Harosheth of the Gentiles unto the river of Kishon. Unto the river of Kishon. — "That ancient river," Judges 5:21 famous afterwards for the slaughter of the Baalites there. 1 Kings 18:40

Revelation 2:27 — And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. And he shall rule them — q.d. I will communicate myself wholly to him. See Psalms 139:6-9 Matthew 19:28 ; 1 Corinthians 6:2-3 .

1 Samuel 18:14 — And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD [was] with him.
