Song of Solomon 4:2 — even] shorn, which came up from the washing; whereof every one bear twins, and none [is] barren among them. Thy teeth are like a flock of sheep, … — Handsome teeth set forth a woman very well, and they are then held handsome when they are (1.) Even and well matched; (2.) Fair and white; (3.) Thick and full. All this we have here daintily set forth in an allegory. And by teeth the Chaldee paraphrast will have meant (and I dissent not) the priests and Levites of the law, the pastors and preachers,
Hosea 3:1 — Timothy 4:2 . And this the Lord here teacheth Hosea to do by his own example of patience and tolerance, notably set forth in this ensuing type. Love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress — This was a harder task than to take her, Hosea 1:2 , in hope she would prove honest. But now that she hath played the adulteress and so deserved to be discarded, yet to love her, yea, and that when she is habituated and hardened in her lewd practices (as the Hebrew word signifieth), Durus est sic
Zechariah 13:7 — given out to the sword by way of apostrophe. Awake — Or, up, as the Septuagint; up and about, thou that hast long lain locked up in the scabbard. Thus the sword is of God’s sending; it is "bathed in heaven," Isaiah 34:5 Ezekiel 14:17 Jeremiah 47:6-7 . It is he that awakes it and sets it on work; he commands it, Amos 9:4 , and ordereth it, Jeremiah 50:25 . Let this patient us under it, as it did Job, Job 1:15 ; Job 1:17 ; Job 1:21 . Among philosophies the most noted sect for
1 Corinthians 12:6 — And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. Diversities of operations — The Holy Ghost may use one of less grace to do more good than one of more; though he delights to honour those of most sincerity with most success, as1 Corinthians 15:10; 1 Corinthians 15:10 .
1 Corinthians 14:3 — But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. To edification, to exhortation — These three ends every preacher ought to propound to himself: 1. Edification in knowledge and holiness. 2. Exhortation, that is, reprehension and admonition. 3. Consolation, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way,Hebrews 12:13; Hebrews 12:13 .
1 Corinthians 6:10 — Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. Nor thieves, nor covetous — These two be fitly set together, as near akin; so are drunkards and railers. Nor extortioners — Whose sin is properly immoderate getting, as that of the covetous consists in pinching and saving. So 1 Timothy 3:3 .
2 Corinthians 2:10 — To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it , for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ; To whom ye forgive — Or, gratify. Mercy is that we must mutually lend and borrow one of another. Let the rigid read Galatians 6:1 .
2 Corinthians 8:17 — For indeed he accepted the exhortation; but being more forward, of his own accord he went unto you. But being more forward — A good heart is ready to every good work, waiting the occasions thereof, Titus 3:1 ; as the bee, as soon as ever the sun breaks forth, flies abroad to gather honey and wax.
Galatians 1:1 — Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;) Who raised him from the dead — And by the same almighty power causeth dead souls to hear the voice of the Son of God in his ministers and live, John 5:25 ; Ephesians 1:19 .
Ephesians 6:1 — Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Children, obey your parents — As Isaac did Abraham in submitting to be sacrificed; as Christ became obedient even to the death of the cross. For this is right — Good and acceptable before God and men, 1 Timothy 5:4 . See Trapp on " Matthew 15:4 "
Colossians 1:29 — Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily. I also labour, striving — Labour to lassitude, strive even to an agony. Good ministers are great painstakers; and God that helped the Levites to bear the ark, 1 Chronicles 15:26 , will help his servants by his Spirit, working in them with power.
Subitus erit transitus a natura corruptibili in beatam inmortalitatem, dice Calvino allí.
1 John 1:2 — (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it , and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) For the life was manifested — Christ, who is "life essential," swallowed up death in victory, and "brought life and immortality to light by the gospel," 2 Timothy 1:10 .
