Psalms 119:55

I remembered thy name, … — Breaking my sleep for the purpose, to meditate on thy holy attributes, word, and works.
And have kept thy law — Which could not have been kept, if not kept in firm and fresh memory. See 1 Corinthians 15:2 .
Psalms 135:1

The cities of Aroer are forsaken, — i.e., The country beyond Jordan Deuteronomy 2:36 is desolated and depopulated - the Gadites and the Reubenites being also, together with the Syrians, carried captive by Tiglathpileser. 1 Chronicles 5:26
Isaiah 23:14
Howl, ye ships of Tarshish: for your strength is laid waste.
Howl, ye ships of Tarshish. — He concludeth this prophecy of Tyre’s downfall as he began. Isaiah 23:1 The inhabitants of Tarshish, or Tarsus in Cilicia, were great ship masters; they sent a navy of a hundred ships to Xerxes when he went against Greece.
Isaiah 23:6
Pass ye over to Tarshish; howl, ye inhabitants of the isle.
Pass ye over to Tarshish. — Tyrii migrate coloni, be packing any whither, and make any shift to save your lives, Ultra Sauromatas fugite hinc, … To Carthage many of them went, say some; and the Septuagint; for ships of Tarshish Isaiah 23:1 have ships of Carthage.
Jeremiah 4:23
I beheld the earth, and, lo, [it was] without form, and void; and the heavens, and they [had] no light.

Ezekiel 32:17

In the fifteenth day of the month, — i.e., Of the twelfth month, Ezekiel 32:1 and about a fortnight after the former prophecy. God loves to foretell, and to do it often.

Stand forth — That the miracle might be notified, and God the more glorified. It is a dishonour to a parent to hang his picture in a dark corner; so here, we should show forth the virtues of him who hath called us, 1 Peter 2:9 .

He must needs go — Happy for them that they lay in our Saviour’s way, to be looked upon; his feet drop fatness. Luther had rather be with Christ in hell than in heaven without him, Malim praesente Christo esse in inferno, quam absente eo in coelo. Luther in Genesis 30:1-43 .
Acts 10:24

Ver. 24, Cornelius waited for them — So the people waited for Zacharias, Luke 1:21 . It is fit the people should wait for the minister, not the minister for the people, Zechariah 8:21 .

And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said , Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.
And certain men, … — Cerinthus, the heretic, with his complices, saith Epiphanius. These are said to "subvert the gospel," Galatians 1:7 . A little thing untowardly mingled, mars all, saith Chrysostom.
Acts 17:13
But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.
They came thither also — Thus they pleased not God and were contrary to all men; wherefore "wrath is come upon them to the utmost," 1 Thessalonians 2:15-16 .
Acts 7:7

And serve me in this place — Servati sumus ut serviamus, Luke 1:74 . The redeemed (among the Romans) was to be at the service of the redeemer all his days.
