Genesis 10:1 — Now these [are] the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood. And unto them were sons born after the flood. — Great store of sons: else how could they so soon have peopled the whole earth? See here the virtue of that divine benediction, Genesis 9:1 ; Genesis 9:7 .

Genesis 16:14 — Wherefore the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, [it is] between Kadesh and Bered. Beer-lahai-roi, — i.e., "The well of him that liveth and seeth me," that is, of the living God, who hath seen to my safety. So rich men are "charged" to "trust not in uncertain riches, but in God," who both "liveth" and "giveth". 1 Timothy 6:17

Genesis 29:32 — And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the LORD hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me. Therefore my husband will love me. — This was her greatest care (and is every good wife’s) - to "please her husband," 1 Corinthians 7:14 and to win his love.

Genesis 47:23 — Then Joseph said unto the people, Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh: lo, [here is] seed for you, and ye shall sow the land. Lo, seed for you, and ye shall sow. — This was the last of the seven years of famine: they might therefore sow "in hope." 1 Corinthians 9:10 Spes alit agricolas.

Genesis 47:7 — And Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and set him before Pharaoh: and Jacob blessed Pharaoh. Jacob blessed Pharaoh. — That is, he prayed God to bless him, both at meeting and parting. To salute is comely: but see that ye be hearty, not frothy; prayerful, not complimental. We are heirs of blessing, and must therefore be free of it. 1 Peter 3:9

Exodus 12:14 — And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever. Ver 14. By an ordinance for ever. — Till "Christ our passover" should be "sacrificed for us"; 1 Corinthians 5:7 and then the Christian passover was to succeed.

Exodus 18:12 — And Jethro, Moses’ father in law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses’ father in law before God. Before God, — i.e., As in his presence, with reverence and godly fear. "To feed without fear" is a foul fault. Judges 1:12 See my "Commonplace of Abstinence."

Leviticus 11:11 — They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination. They shall be even an abomination. — To teach us, that nothing is lawful, no not for our common use, unless it be "sanctified by the word of God and prayer." 1 Timothy 4:5 Acts 10:35

Leviticus 7:21 — Moreover the soul that shall touch any unclean [thing, as] the uncleanness of man, or [any] unclean beast, or any abominable unclean [thing], and eat of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which [pertain] unto the LORD, even that soul shall be cut off from his people. Cut off from his people. — Compare 1 Corinthians 11:27-29 .

Romans 14:2 — For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. Eateth herbs — Rather than meats forbidden by the law, Daniel 1:11 . The ancient Latins were as well paid of herbs to eat, as if they had had all manner of dainties. Green herbs were both food and medicine to them. Holus ab Vegetables from ολον .

Romans 8:9 — But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. He is none of his — As the merchant sets his seal upon his goods, so doth God his Spirit upon all his people, Ephesians 1:13 .

1 Corinthians 12:12 — For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. So also is Christ — Mystical Christ, the Church. Christ the Saviour of his body Ephesians 5:23 accounts not himself complete without his Church, Ephesians 1:23 . So God is called Jacob, Psalms 24:6 .

1 Corinthians 6:19 — What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? That your body is the temple — Shall we make the temple of God the stews of Satan See 1 Corinthians 3:16 . Antiochus and Pompey never prospered after that they defiled the temple.

Ephesians 4:11 — And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; Some pastors and teachers — Distinct officers,Romans 12:7-8; Romans 12:7-8 , yet one man may be both, 1 Corinthians 12:28-29 . The essential differences between pastors and teachers in each congregation is much denied by many learned and godly divines.

Philippians 1:16 — Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord? Both in the flesh — Perhaps Onesimus was Philemon’s kinsman. And in the Lord — Sanctior est copula cordis quam corporis. "He that is joined to the Lord is one spirit," 1 Corinthians 6:17 .

1 Thessalonians 2:12 — That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory. Walk worthy of God — Whose livery we wear, whose image we bear, whose kingdom we are called unto, … Those that stood with the Lamb, Revelation 14:1 , had his Father’s name on their foreheads. Our wanderings reflect upon God, who will require and requite.

2 Thessalonians 2:16 — Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, And good hope — The fruit of everlasting consolation, Romans 15:4 . And well called good, because it hath for its object the greatest good, and that which is of greatest certainty, Hebrews 11:1 .

Hebrews 3:9 — When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. Tempted me — God must be trusted, but not tempted, as he is, when men, 1. Question and awake his power; 2. Limit the Holy One of Israel, and presume to prescribe to him, set him a time, …; 3. Nelgect the use of means, and serve not his providence.

1 John 2:28 — And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. Little children, abide in him — q.d. Your enemies are many and crafty; therefore keep home, keep home; this shall be no grief unto you, nor offence of heart, as she said, 1 Samuel 25:31 .

1 John 4:14 — And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. And we have seen — sc. By special privilege (that which natural eye never saw, 1 John 4:12 ), the backparts of Jehovah, his wisdom, justice, mercy, …; we can see no more and live, we need see no more that we may live.
