Ecclesiastes 3:9 — What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth? What profit hath he that worketh? … — i.e., How can any man, by any means he can use, help or hinder this volubility and vanity that he meets with in every creature? Cui bono? What profit? See Trapp on " Ecclesiastes 1:3 " whereunto this verse relateth, as being a conclusion of the principal argument.

Jeremiah 25:5 — They said, Turn ye again now every one from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that the LORD hath given unto you and to your fathers for ever and ever: They said, Turn ye again. — This was the sum of all the prophet’s sermons, as of the apostles’, "Repent ye and believe the gospel.," Mark 1:15

Ezekiel 27:9 — The ancients of Gebal and the wise [men] thereof were in thee thy calkers: all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in thee to occupy thy merchandise. The ancients of Gebal. — Great architects, 1 Kings 5:18 but persecutors of the Church. Psalms 83:7 Thy calkers. — Or, Stoppers of chinks, stuppa, pice, aliaque materia, when the ship springeth a leak.

Ezekiel 29:1 — In the tenth year, in the tenth [month], in the twelfth [day] of the month, the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, In the tenth year. — The year before Jerusalem was taken. Ezekiel 24:1 In the tenth month. — Called "Tebeth," Esther 2:16 and it answereth to our January, saith Bede. Chronology is the eye of prophecy, as well as of history.

Ezekiel 38:6 — Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: [and] many people with thee. Gomer, and all his bands. — The Cimbrians or Cimmerians, saith Melanchthon; the Galatians, saith Theodoret. The house of Togarmah. — The Phrygians, as some; the Armenians, as others will. Of antichrist’s great power, see Revelation 9:1-20 ; Revelation 20:8 . See on Ezekiel 27:14 .

Daniel 9:6 — Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. Neither have we hearkened. — Sins of omission are in a special manner to be lamented in prayer; Jeremiah 9:1 ; Jeremiah 9:10 ; Jeremiah 9:13 for as omission of diet breedeth diseases, so of duties.

Matthew 22:2 — The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, Like unto a certain king — God is a great King, and he stands upon his seniority, Malachi 1:8 , will be served of the best, and curseth that cheat that does otherwise,Matthew 22:14; Matthew 22:14 . He scorneth to drink the devil’s snuffs, to take his leavings.

Mark 10:14 — But when Jesus saw it , he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. For of such is the kingdom of God — As oft, therefore, as we see an infant, let us think that a teacher is given us of God, Psalms 131:1-2 .

Mark 4:1 — And he began again to teach by the sea side: and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land. And he began again, … — sc. The self-same day wherein he had that busy bout with the blasphemous Pharisees. See Trapp on " Matthew 13:1 "

Mark 8:25 — After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly. He saw every man clearly — τηλαυγως , Procul et dilucide, longe lateque. When we come to heaven, we shall see as we are seen, who now see but as in a glass obscurely, as old men do through spectacles, 1 Corinthians 13:12 .

Luke 1:40 — And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. Saluted Elisabeth — To whom she could not rest till she had imparted the good news, and both given and received some spiritual gift for mutual confirmation and comfort, Romans 1:11-12 . Grief grows greater by concealing, joy by expression. Only the meeting of saints in heaven can parallel the meeting of these two cousins.

Luke 13:2 — And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? Because they suffered such things — None out of hell ever suffered more than those worthies, Hebrews 11:1-40 . Shall any therefore condemn that generation of God’s children?Psalms 73:15; Psalms 73:15 . SeeLamentations 4:6; Lamentations 4:6 ; Daniel 9:12 .

Luke 20:45 — And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 43 Till I make thine enemies thy footstool. 44 David therefore calleth him Lord, how is he then his son? 45 Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples, See Matthew 23:1-5 Mark 12:38 ; Luke 11:43 .

Luke 3:10 — And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? What shall we do? — q.d. What are those fruits worthy of repentance, that we in our places must bring forth? That we may find in ourselves that confident answer, stipulation, or interrogation, επερωτημα , rather of a good conscience toward God, mentioned by St Peter, 1 Peter 3:21 , in allusion (I suppose) to this text.

John 15:23 — He that hateth me hateth my Father also. He that hateth me — It is wonder how any should, yet we read of God-haters, Romans 1:30 , and all sin is a kind of God-slaughter, Omne peccatum est Deicidium. All sin is a a God slayer. The wicked wish there were no God, when David cries out, Vivat Deus, Let God live. Psalms 18:46 .

John 9:19 — And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see? Is this your son? — Here they try another trick to obscure the miracle; but it would not be. "God taketh the wise in their own craftiness." Again, "The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain," 1 Corinthians 3:19-20 .
