2 Chronicles 11:15 — And he ordained him priests for the high places, and for the devils, and for the calves which he had made. And he ordained him priests. — See 1 Kings 12:31 . And for the devils. — Heb., Hairy horrid things, boegy men. See Revelation 9:11 ; Revelation 9:20 . The devil is ειδωλοχαρης , saith Synesius; and hereby it appeareth that Jeroboam set up more idols than the two golden calves.
2 Chronicles 12:13 — So king Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem, and reigned: for Rehoboam [was] one and forty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. And his mother’s name [was] Naamah an Ammonitess. For Rehoboam was one and forty years old. — See 1 Kings 14:21 .
2 Chronicles 22:6 — And he returned to be healed in Jezreel because of the wounds which were given him at Ramah, when he fought with Hazael king of Syria. And when the burnt offering began, the song of the LORD began [also] with the trumpets, and with the instruments [ordained] by David king of Israel. The song of the Lord began also. — Holy and divine songs, Psalms 136:1-26 especially, which is here, by an excellency, called the song of the Lord, as some think.
2 Chronicles 4:4 — It stood upon twelve oxen, three looking toward the north, and three looking toward the west, and three looking toward the south, and three looking toward the east: and the sea [was set] above upon them, and all their hinder parts [were] inward. It stood upon twelve oxen. — Prefiguring, say some, the twelve apostles, who carried the water of life all the world over. See 1 Kings 7:25 .
2 Chronicles 7:10 — And on the three and twentieth day of the seventh month he sent the people away into their tents, glad and merry in heart for the goodness that the LORD had shewed unto David, and to Solomon, and to Israel his people. The devil for like cause spake Christ fair to be rid of him, Mark 1:24 . For the fear of them fell upon them — God can make the very name and countenance of his servants fearful to their oppressors.
Psalms 116:12 — What shall I render unto the LORD [for] all his benefits toward me? What shall I render unto the Lord — This he speaketh as one in an ecstasy ( Amor Dei est ecstaticus ), or in a deep demur what to do best for so good a God. Such self-deliberations are very useful and acceptable, and thereunto are requisite, 1. Recognition of God’s favours. 2. Estimation. 3. Retribution, as here.
Psalms 18:47 — [It is] God that avengeth me, and subdueth the people under me. It is God that avengeth me — Heb. that giveth vengeances for me; whence also he is called the God of vengeances, Psalms 94:1 , and the God of recompenses, Jeremiah 51:56 . And subdueth the people under me — It is the great work of God to persuade the hearts of so many millions to obey one man.
Psalms 78:61 — And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy’s hand. And delivered his strength … his glory, … — i.e. His ark, which is elsewhere called the strength of God, 1 Chronicles 16:11 2 Chronicles 6:41 , and the glory of God, Psalms 26:8 ; Psalms 63:3 , because out of it he was wont to declare his power and glory, and to make himself visible after a sort.
