Isaiah 44:18 — They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; [and] their hearts, that they cannot understand. They have not known nor understood. — How should they, say, when infatuated and given up to an injudicious mind, or reprobate sense, as those? Romans 1:28 For he hath shut their eyes. — Heb., Daubed up their eyes from seeing, their hearts from understanding. “ Mons oblita Dei, vitiorumque oblita caeno. ”

Jeremiah 15:12 — Shall iron break the northern iron and the steel? Shall iron break the northern iron and the steel? — That is, say some, shall these hardhearted Jews be too hard for me? or, for thee, Jeremiah, whom I have made an "iron pillar and brazen walls" against the whole land Jeremiah 1:18 Never think it. Brighten thee they may, but not break thee. The northern iron is noted for the best and toughest.

Jeremiah 3:20 — Surely [as] a wife treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD. Surely as a treacherous wife, … — This ye have done, but that is your present grief, and now you look upon your former disloyalties with a lively hatred of them, holding that the time past of your life may suffice to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, … 1 Peter 4:3

Jeremiah 35:18 — And Jeremiah said unto the house of the Rechabites, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all that he hath commanded you: Because ye have obeyed the commandment. — Obedience to parents hath an ample recompense of reward, as that which is good and acceptable before God and men. 1 Timothy 5:4

Jeremiah 42:13 — But if ye say, We will not dwell in this land, neither obey the voice of the LORD your God, But if ye say, We will not dwell in this land. — Because more barren than Egypt, and besides beset with many and mighty enemies Neither obey the voice of the Lord your God. — Which you ought to do, whatever come of it, since rebellion is as witchcraft. 1 Samuel 15:22-23

Jeremiah 50:34 — Their Redeemer [is] strong; the LORD of hosts [is] his name: he shall throughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon. Their Redeemer is strong. — Or, But their strong avenger, whose name is the Lord of hosts; he shall thoroughly plead their cause - i.e., right their wrongs. That he may give rest to the land. — See on 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9 .

Jeremiah 9:18 — And let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters. And let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us. — Of this vanity or affectation God approveth not, as neither he did of the Olympic games, of usury, of that custom at Corinth, 1 Corinthians 15:29 which yet he maketh his use of.

Lamentations 3:29 — He putteth his mouth in the dust; if so be there may be hope. He putteth his mouth in the dust. — He lieth low at God’s feet: putting himself into the hands of justice, yet in hope of mercy. See 1 Corinthians 14:25 . If so be there may be hope. — Heb., Peradventure there is hope - q.d., doubtless there is; however, I will try, since I have lost many a worse labour.

Ezekiel 13:2 — Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel that prophesy, and say thou unto them that prophesy out of their own hearts, Hear ye the word of the LORD; Prophesy against the prophets. — Illis enim crania mala feruntur accepts. See Jeremiah 23:32-33 ; Jeremiah 23:38 . That prophesy out of their own hearts. — Whose prophecies came by the will of man, 2 Peter 1:21 and not cum privilegio. with by right.

Ezekiel 23:5 — And Aholah played the harlot when she was mine; and she doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians [her] neighbours, And Aholah played the harlot when she was mine. — Fornicata est sub me, under colour and covert of a marriage made with me. See what a fair gloss Jeroboam set upon his foul idolatry. 1 Kings 12:28 On the Assyrians, her neighbours. — So they were now become, by the conquest of Syria.

Ezekiel 29:21 — In that day will I cause the horn of the house of Israel to bud forth, and I will give thee the opening of the mouth in the midst of them; and they shall know that I [am] the LORD. The horn, — i.e., The strength, power, and authority, in the kingdom of Christ especially. Luke 1:69 The opening. — Occasion to bless my name. They shall know. — Nebuchadnezzar also, and his Babylonians.

Ezekiel 34:15 — I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord GOD. I will feed my flock. — Doing all the offices of a good shepherd for them, and charging mine undershepherds to do so too. And I will cause them to lie down. — By giving rest to their souls, Matthew 11:28 together with many happy halcyons, that they may serve me without fear. Luke 1:74

Ezekiel 40:47 — So he measured the court, an hundred cubits long, and an hundred cubits broad, foursquare; and the altar [that was] before the house. So he measured. — Christ doeth all things in his Church in number, weight, and measure. Ezekiel 45:15 — And one lamb out of the flock, out of two hundred, out of the fat pastures of Israel; for a meat offering, and for a burnt offering, and for peace offerings, to make reconciliation for them, saith the Lord GOD. Out of the fat pastures. — Those that are well watered and most fruitful. God must have the very best of the best, and that on pain of a heavy curse. Malachi 1:14

Matthew 28:17 — And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. They worshipped him, but some doubted — Even while they worshipped, they doubted; yet was not their worship rejected. The Lord knoweth his still, 2 Timothy 2:19 . But they know not him still, as here in this text; howbeit they are "known of him,"Galatians 4:9; Galatians 4:9 , and their whole way both known and approved, Psalms 1:6 .

Luke 1:27 — To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. Espoused to a man — 1. The better to free her from suspicion of fornication. 2. That she might have one to provide for her when she was with child. 3. That the mystery of God manifested in the flesh might come to light by little and little, Sensim sine sensu.

Luke 2:38 — And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem. Gave thanks likewise — Succinuit Simeoni, seconded Simeon, and sang the same song. This was somewhat extraordinary, as being against that, 1 Timothy 2:12 , and therefore occured only in troublesome and confused times of the Church; as likewise Huldah the prophetess. Our Praedicantissae have here no patronage.

John 2:7 — Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. Up to the brim — God permits his people an honest affluence. Christ supplies them here with great store of wine, to the quantity of a thousand and eight hundred pounds, as Beza computes, Nimirum ad libras mille octingentas: quod pertinet ad miraculi magnitudinem. No small gifts fall from so great a hand, James 1:5 .

John 5:9 — And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath. And immediately the man — Christ’s words are operative (together with his commands there goes forth a power, as Luke 5:17 ). So they were in the creation, Genesis 1:3 . So they are still in regeneration, Isaiah 59:21 . Dei dicere, est efficere. For God to say is to do.
