Genesis 23:1 — Y Sara tenía ciento veintisiete años: [estos fueron] los años de la vida de Sara. Ver. 1. Y Sara tenía cien años, etc. ] Los teólogos observan que Dios pensó que no era apropiado decirnos la duración de la vida de ninguna mujer en las Escrituras, sino Sara, para humillar ese sexo, que debido a que fueron los primeros en traer la muerte, merecían no tener la continuidad de sus vidas registrada por la pluma de Dios.

Luke 16:26 — And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. There is a great gulf fixed — viz. By the unmovable and immutable decree of God, called mountains of brass, Zechariah 6:1 , from between which all effects and actions come forth as so many chariots. εστηρικται . Luke 17:13 — And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. The Church keeps her fruit for her Beloved.

John 1:21 — Elias that you imagine, Elias the Tishbite, by a transanimation ( μετεμψυχωσις Pythagorica). As neither was he an angel, as some in Chrysostom’s time would gather out of Malachi 3:1 . They that wrest the Scriptures are blinded, as Papists, and other brain sick heretics.

We have found — The Greek word imports the sudden and unexpected finding of such a community as he looked not for. See Isaiah 65:1 . ευρηκαμεν. ευρημα , lucrum insperatum, et repente oblatum.

John 17:25 — O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. O righteous Father — God’s righteousness is either, 1. Of equity, to punish offences. Or, 2. Of fidelity, to make good his promises. In which respect it is no arrogance nor presumption (said Master Glover, martyr) to burden God, as it were, with his promises; and of duty to claim his aid, help, and assistance.

John 8:54 — Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God: It is my Father that honoureth me — According to that, "Them that honour me, I will honour," 1 Samuel 2:30 ; this is a bargain of God’s own making. Fame follows virtue, as the shadow the body; or if not, yet she is proprio contenta theatro, content with her own applause.

John 9:26 — Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes? What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes? — How fain would envy here have fastened her fangs, and have found somewhat to say, whereby to cast a slur on the miracle. They are even question sick, as those 1 Timothy 6:4 . Et si non aliqua nocuissent, … They feed upon their own hearts, because they cannot come at Christ’s.

Acts 12:1 — Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church. Now about that time — That the famine lay sore upon the Church. Afflictions seldom come single. The saints usually fall into various temptations at once, James 1:2 . Fluctus fluctum trudit. Job’s messengers tread one upon the heels of another. Herod the king — Nephew to Herod the Great, brother to Herodias, and father to that Agrippa, Acts 25:13 .
