Matthew 6:20 a thousands years hence. For in a treasure there are three things, -a laying up, a lying hidden, and a drawing out for present use. Riches reach not to eternity. Therefore while others lay hold upon riches, "Lay thou hold on eternal life," 1 Timothy 6:12 , and that "by following after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness." This, this is the true treasure; this is to be rich, as our Saviour speaketh, toward God, and is opposed to laying up treasure for himself,
Acts 18:6 Αντιτασσομενων , And when they bade him battle. A military term.
Your blood be upon your own heads — Answerable to their wish, Matthew 27:25 , and according to their manner of putting their sins upon the head of the sacrificed creature, Leviticus 1:4 ; Leviticus 3:2 .
Romans 13:2 the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
Resisteth the power — His authoritative commands, not his personal.
Receive to themselves damnation — κριμα , 1 Corinthians 11:31-32 . Poenam sibi auferent, saith Piscator, they shall receive punishment, to wit, from the magistrate; as Aretine deserved to do, who by longer custom of libellous and contumelious speaking against princes, had got such a habit, that
Romans 16:5 Ecclesia, Academia, Curia. the church, the university and the government.
The first fruits of Achaia — The first that received the gospel there. A singular commendation, a sweet happiness. God’s soul hath desired such first ripe fruits, Micah 7:1 , such primroses.
2 Corinthians 2:2
For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me?
But the same which is made, … — Nothing can cure a faithful minister of his cordolium, of his heart’s grief, but his people’s amendment. "Now we live if ye stand fast in the Lord," 1 Thessalonians 3:8 , else we are all amort, In the state or act of death; lifeless, inanimate; fig. spiritless, dejected. ŒD and you kill the very hearts of us.
Philippians 4:22 Caesar’s household — When Caesar himself lived and died an unconverted caitiff (wretch) and a castaway. So did Seneca, for aught we can find by his writings, though some would have him to be here designed among the rest. See Trapp on " Romans 1:18 "
Colossians 2:16
Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days :
Let no man therefore judge you — That is, set not up any such for a judge over your consciences; or, if any usurp such an authority, slight him, according to that, Galatians 5:1 . In things of God we should be tender of our liberty.
1 Thessalonians 5:25
Brethren, pray for us.
Brethren, pray for us — The best may need the prayers of the meanest. God will have us beholden herein one to another, 1 Corinthians 12:21-22 . How earnest is that great apostle in begging prayers,Romans 15:30; Romans 15:30 . Pray for me, I say, pray for me, I say (quoth father Latimer), for I am sometimes so fearful that I could creep into a mouse hole; sometimes God doth visit me again with his comfort. (Acts and Mon.)
Titus 2:15 rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.
Let no man despise thee — περιφρονειτα Nemo te plus sapere ausit. Or have occasion to think himself wiser than thee. He saith not, a1 Timothy 4:12; 1 Timothy 4:12 ; "Let no man despise thy youth," for Titus was (likely) elder than Timothy. Mr Calvin thinketh that these words are spoken to the people; they are, for the most part, of delicate ears, and cannot abide plain words
Titus 2:15 Estas cosas habla, exhorta y reprende con toda autoridad. No dejes que ningun hombre te desprecie.
Ver. 15. Nadie te desprecie ] περιφρονειτα Nemo te plus sapere ausit.
Hebrews 9:26
For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
To put away sin — To abrogate it, Hebrews 1:3 , to bind it in a bundle, seal it up in a bag, Daniel 9:24 , cast it behind him as cancelled obligations, Micah 7:18-20 , blot out the black handwriting with the red lines of his blood drawn over it.
1 Peter 2:1
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
All malice and all guile — Out with this leaven utterly, 1 Corinthians 5:7 . Howsoever we otherwise fail, let us not in these be found faulty at all. These are not the spots of God’s children, Deuteronomy 32:5 . They are without gall, without guile, children that will not lie: they do not wallow or allow themselves in any kind of these evils; which are therefore plurally expressed.
2 Peter 3:11 shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
What manner of men — ποταπους , even to admiration, quales et quanti, as the word signifies, Mark 13:1 . How accurate, and how elevated above the ordinary strain!
In all holy conversation and godliness — Gr.
